Thank you for this.. i am deciding to give notice next week. I have been in a family of 8 for 3 years full time now and been constantly paid a month late. I have no idea how long will i put down on my resignation notice this helps a lot thank you. Though i am hesitant if i clould make it out there alone.. you see i am very new to canada. 😅

I am sorry this is happening to you. There are resource centres across Canada that help new immigrants. Be sure to reach out to one of them if you have trouble collecting your final pay. Or call Employment Standards. They will also help for free.

Thx for this! I just gave notice to my lovely family of 2 years. Because I am going semi retired. I gave them two months notice on the condition if they find a new nanny much sooner that is okay.. I will go sooner. It was hard to tell them ... I cried ...bit it is time in my life.

Hi Michelle a bit off topic, but I wanted to hear your opinion on my current situation. My nanny family left on vacation a few weeks ago, and now their baby refuses to sleep on his own. I had been rocking him to sleep or laying on the floor next to him, but that meant I only had about an hour to eat my lunch and clean their house. And for them it means that they don’t get to get work done when I’m not there. I stopped doing that and would let him cry it out for about an hour (something the mom said they were doing too). However I know that for bedtime, if he is crying his parents bring him to their bed. Today I put him down and opened the front door to throw out the trash and immediately his mom came out of her office saying “I’m going to check on him because he heard the front door open and he thinks he’s alone in the house.” And I said “He was already crying” but she said she knew it was that so I just waited downstairs while she went to check on him. As you can probably guess, after seeing his mommy he refused even more to take a nap. I decided to suggest that if we kept going up there every time he whines, he will continue to fight his sleep. I said that he had only been down for about 20 minutes today and she interrupted me and said “The other day that you weren’t here he was up there crying for two hours and that’s not good for him.” And I said “That’s what I was about to say… we should give him like 45 min or an hour because then he’s really tired” and she told me that she has a lot of nieces and nephews so she knows about this type of issue and that I was just guessing that that was the problem. Then she kept saying he felt warm and checked his temperature twice. I told her “He was just upset thats probably why he feels warm” but she proceeded to check his temperature a third time. I know it is her son and she decides what to do with him, but if he doesn’t nap I don’t get to take a break, which isn’t a big deal honestly because I’m just lying with him, but I’m also left with a really grouchy and moody baby because he is really tired. Any thoughts on what I should do?

Thank you for taking the time to write all of that out. Have you considered consulting with a baby sleep expert? They can help get the baby on a schedule, learn how to self sooth and figure out any issues that may be causing him to cry and not nap.

Sorry we only work with Nannie’s already in Canada. You can get a two year working holiday visa and then reach out to us when you arrive.

The family I have been working for the past three years informed me they would be reducing my rate by 37% because the father was talking about how much I make at work and everyone was so shocked and told him that there are much cheaper nannies out there so the dad put up an ad without me knowing and apparently there’s a bunch of nannies that can do my job but cheaper as he said the mom wants to give me 30 days to think about either staying for that much of a reduced rate, or to continue to look for other jobs. Do I still need to hand them a letter of resignation this has never happened to me before I really don’t know what to do. I’m flabbergasted.

I am sorry this is happening to you. Just because someone will do it cheaper does not mean they will do it as well or be reliable. The family will soon find this out. The rules for giving notice will depend on where you live and what your contract says.

Hi Michelle, one quick question do you have a video on what you are entitled to receive legally if you quit?if you have been working for them for 1 year and 3 months, do I need to get paid for proportional vacation of those 3 months?

I don’t have a video because it will depend on what country you live in and even province and state. I would look into your local employment standards laws.

i just quit my new nanny job, just not the fit for me. but i know the parents are really picky and i’m scared i’m going to be with them for months even tho they know i’m unhappy. they are in an agency (as am i) but we’ve been told there’s a nanny shortage. what do i do? 😭 thank you!!

There should be an end date when you quit and give notice. Not just an open “when you find a new nanny”. Tell them when you plan you last day to be, giving them reasonable notice.

@@TheNannySolution i quit last friday and they’ve already expressed they hope i stay until a replacement is found. i absolutely love the parents, they are so understanding and i’d feel so guilty leaving them hanging, but i’m already so unhappy and the commute is 1 hour each way 😭

You have to do what feels right for you. Three weeks is fair. And what if they don’t find a new nanny for 3 months. What happens then???

Can I use sick days and holidays as notice period in the UK?( underpaid and not paid overtime)

I do not know the laws in the UK. I would suggest that this is not a great way to give notice. The reason for two weeks notice is to give families time to find another nanny. If you use sick days and vacation days it would mean they would be left without a nanny immediately. If you want to leave on a good note this is not going to be the best way.
