This is so helpful!! My husband and I live in Minnesota and we’re getting ready to do our roof raise. Your way of doing it seems so much simpler than other videos I’ve seen on KZbin! Thank you for sharing the entire process, that was so so so helpful. Best wishes on your skoolie journey 💛

G'day and greetings from Tasmania Australia bloody good idea what you have done and even better how you explained the process involved in lifting the roof, and the cost involved in doing it. Well done I've notice that some people wouldn't do it because the cost. Thank you for itemising the items and a breakdown of what you need. Thank you take care John

Awesome job. And judging by the trash can you forgot to mention to drink lots of Monsters. 😏

Haha, yes many guys that worked on the bus with us drank those often!

I'm going to be doing this also. I am a master carpenter though, so it seems pretty easy. Except I dont have a welder and stuff. I'm planning on 2 inch foam for walls and ceiling so I figured 4x4 wood posts in place of steel will be better than actual steel. If you add a 2x4 flat ways over the 2 inch foam it pads out to 3.5 inches matching the plane of the 4x4s. Cut bus in half at windows. Use comealongs from roof of barn to lift it off. Install 4x4s at every window pillar. Atratch a 2x6 to outside where the upper part of window pillars will rest on the 2x6. Lower roof down, use legs through bus channels into 4x4s, 2x4s between for rack bracing. New skin on outside and done.....not hard. Yeah I'll loose 8 inches in with but I would anyways with insulation. Everybody forgets about insulation and they freeze n sweat their asses off.

Love to see how this turns out. Are you thinking plywood or sheet metal for the skins?

Lord dude, have you started this project yet? Please go buy a mug welder and there are channels on KZbin that teach you how to weld! You will be able to weld as good as a pro within a week with a mig welder. There’s many reasons why not to use your ideas but the biggest is the safety of it all! Using steel and welding that steel makes the shell stronger than wood ever will be!! Plus the fact that if your adding a 4x4 wood post at every window rib, the. You e we I’ll be adding tremendous amount of weight and that’s even before you get to the finish work and these busses already have a difficult time getting to and maintaining highway speeds which means your gonna be pushing your engine further than you want to really push it!! As far as the insulation goes, your off on that as well. Folks don’t forget about that at all. With today’s new insulation products out there , 2” of today’s materials are better than 8” Of the standard fiberglass batts. Do some research on it. You are throwing away extremely valuable space by sacrificing 8”-12” just for insulation. You will miss that space bad the very first time you take a trip!! As far as being hot or cold, I haven’t been in a schoolie conversion yet that was not easy to heat or cool ! About everyone of them had almost too much heat and air cause if your not careful, you’ll run yourself out of them in the winter or freeze yourself in the summer with the a/c!! I truly think you need to go back to the drawing board on this and study good solid actual builds cause all of your info is completely backwards. I’m not trying to be mean or negative but realistic!! There are hundreds upon hundreds of builds out there that can easily disprove all of your current thoughts about bus conversions are completely inaccurate at best and your method of raising a roof on one will simply be dangerous for you while driving as well as others around you on the road. Save your “master craftsmen” knowledge work it’s magic when it’s time to build the cabinets and all your finish work! Don’t try and reinvent the wheel here plus the fact that all of that lumber and miscellaneous hardware will cost well more than the steel you need plus a brand new mig welder will cost that will give you the strongest, safest shell that you’ll need to for the rest of the conversion. Your plans have trouble stamped all over them, sorry!

Basically if you buy a Box Truck instead, it has aluminum box that is 8ft tall, wider and way lighter, and easier/cheaper to keep warm and cool than a steel school bus. Most people don't think past "buy a bus" and the not-even-cheap-anymore purchase price.

I'm the kind of guy that likes to drive around. I'm never in one place. I drive from town to town. Where pretty girls are, you know that I'm around. They call me the Wonderer. When I find myself falling for some girl, I hop back in the bus and drive around the world.

So I'm assuming you used the welder to attach the steal beams and the rivers for the side panels? Is this correct? I'm considering raising my ambulance roof as I can barely stand up in it as is... What do you think? Would this be possible on an ambulance? Love the video! Thank so much!
@TeamBassett3 жыл бұрын
The panels are all riveted on-it may work for you!
@1982MCI3 жыл бұрын
Yes it’s possible! Anything is possible if you have the time and money to invest in it! But, to help answer your question better Julian, it’s very possible to raise an ambulance roof using much of the same techniques that you would use on a buss, they are just smaller. Another KZbinr recently did an ambulance conversion with a roof raise for his daughter to live in and you can look up his channel and take a look at what they did to give you a better idea than just us telling you it’s possible! His channels name is “Skoolie Skool”. He’s a great guy and has been doing this type of stuff for years! Good luck on yours Julian!! Take care and be safe out there!!

Material costs have gone up a lot since we did this video. I would try a few more places just to see to price check.
