Total Seal Piston Rings

5 ай бұрын

We took a NASCAR engine that had been sitting for 20 years and put it back on the dyno. Then we honed it, swapped the pistons and the rings and put it back on the dyno. Why? Because these are the kind of things we explore in the ‪@EnginePerformanceExpo‬ . In this video, we show you the results of this test and give you a taste of what's on tap on the Engine Performance Expo channel.
We’ve actually run this same test on two different engines, and the results were the same both times. With the old pistons, rings and hone, the engine made 730 HP with the baseline carb and fuel (32 degrees of timing). With the new rings, pistons and hone, the engine made 773 HP with the baseline carb and fuel at 30 degrees of timing.
For the complete engine build series, check out this link and follow the playlist ‪@Stapleton42‬ • Lake Speed's Forgotten...

On our Super Stock Hemi (2004) we gained 35 H.P. going from a "local machine shop" hone job from a CK-10 to a Job from a knowledgeable shop and a CK-25 it detected "taper in the bore" and corrected for it and also the proper ring finish.

I would like to see what happens on a junk yard or older SBC and do a before and after dingle ball hone and new rings! Because literally no one has a NASCAR engine just laying around. You guys have more money into the little bit of work you did on that engine than most complete street car engine builds!
@ebay4dave

well, a rough calculation being that they made 791hp up from 733 they made 58 hp, on your average SBC or other making 400+ you could expect about 30ish hp or 20 hp if your just doing piston rods and a hone, still not bad.
@MrAnviljenkins
@MrAnviljenkins 5 ай бұрын
Most of the SBC we would tear down in late 70's early 80's had a decent ridge at the top of the cyl by 80K miles. The really cool test would be the dingle ball hone and new rings that a lot of folks did. Then do a perfect piston, ring, hone combo. What they got here was around 10% though so on an engine that makes maybe 275hp stock like those boneyard 350 SBC would on a good day might only gain 25hp ?

Absolutely. Who has a "spare" NASCAR engine laying around? 🤣 Take a worn V8 engine that still runs decent and put it on the dyno. Then replace the Pistons, rings, bearings and oil pump, disassemble the heads and clean them, put new oil seals on them, with NO valve work other than lapping by hand. Hone the cylinders, and do no other machine work. Reassemble it with the original camshaft, lifters and a new timing chain. Then dyno it again and see what it does. Then do a high performance camshaft swap, with an aftermarket intake, carb and headers, and dyno it again and see what it does again.

I love the test concept - how much is the piston/ring/hone combo worth. It seems like it was spoiled by other changes. The carb/fuel change is responsible for a good portion of the gain, and I think we want to see what just the piston/ring/hone comb was worth on it's own. Surely those results are available, right?
@TotalSeal

The piston/ring/hone combo with the baseline carb and fuel produced 773 HP (with a base tune) vs 730 for the old pistons, rings and hone. The new carb/fuel/tune up was the other 18 HP.

This is interesting because I just refreshed a snowmobile engine with a hone and pistons. The butt dyno says it perked up a huge amount. I had forgotten how hard the sled could pull. Its a 2 stroke, twin cylinder 794cc motor made by Sizuki in a 2011 Arctic Cat CF 800 H.O. that was factory rated at 163h.p. and had around 10,000 miles on odometer. It started feeling a little sluggish last spring which prompted the new Wiseco pistons. That and a quick hone was all it took to bring back the feeling of my arms being stretched every flick of the throttle.

This is a awesome and very interesting topic I have heard for years that a guy that buys a new car could break the engine in and then take it to a really good machine shop and they would gain ten horsepower just from having the engine blueprinted I know that a lot of this is due to the block becoming thermally stable after having been heat cycled and I also know that there are methods that can make a brand new block act like a seasoned block ahead of time by sending high frequency sound waves or vibrations through the block in a fixture for many hours I think his machine is called a Vibrolax or maybe Vibralax but I assume it is a form of mechanical stress relieving the metal in the engine block using a clamping fixture that vibrates the engine block and thus relaxing or relieving any stress that might be present that would distort the machinists work after the first heat cycle had it not been removed or relaxed. There can be tons of pressure per square inch of metal in internal stresses that are there but static and then once heated they move and relax we want to do our machining on parts that are stable and won't move around though this is the whole reasoning behind this myth or real physical phenomena. A old cast iron block that has been ran out to needing an overhaul is known as a seasoned block if it has sat for 30- more years in someones garage some think this is even better too Haha Like aged Whiskey I am aware that this video is not about this topic but mainly friction reduction by using newer style rings and better designed pistons to reduce friction along with the proper cylinder preparation but this is a step in this whole ideology that I thought deserved to be mentioned

so you did the test on the rings, bore, piston design and coatings? then made a fuel and carb change? Why not do a more scientific back to back test of the piston / cyl changes only? its hard to validate your results here, a carb and fuel / ignition change could easily make a 10% increase alone if the thing was choked down on less than ideal fuel before...

@@badass6.0powerstroke10 I started using MS109 in my car and like it. it pops real nice (throttle is so crisp). my holley 4150 runs rich, and i went with some oxygenated race fuels and can feel the much crispier throttle responses. i like at almost 5k' elevation in the dessert, so it helps me. i also like T4 fuel and ETS prodrag3. i didn't have to use any higher jets, running 84's all around. i have high desset altitude and heat to deal with. I tried VP CHP fuel. it was good too, but hard on the fuel system so becareful, and i probably needed the 84 jets, as i was running 80s at the time i wish i had more compression, but if your setup runs super rich, and you have access to these types of fuels, give it a shot, see how it responds if you're running pig rich, but to lazy to rejet, swap out the fuel to something like these, and i have a feeling you'll get a smile.... (i'm not aying it's cost effective, just an option if one wants to try) i use them because in my area NM, pump gas 91oct isn't consistent or great. car would get burbbly a lot. only fuel that was consistent was shell 91, but very expensive and hard to get (one station locally) race fuels are awesome, sure expensive if you have to have it shipped like i do, but the tinkering i've done with it, i really like it. I don't drive the car much so cost is worth it me. next refresh i'll seriously up the compression so i can see a massive improvement using these fuels. BTW... a GREAT true blue printed engine will definitely make more power, of course with a matching tune, but, one must compare the costs for it. done right, with the right equipment and as with EVERY type of the service the expertise/knowledge and quality of person doing it is priceless and the big key. this is where one might say i'll go bigger bore/stroke/cubes vs paying for high dollar machine/labor. That thinking is strictly for someone with say a prostreet/street/strip type of car or need. GREAT video BTW.....

I have tried to put TCW3 rated 2 stroke oil as upper cylinder lubricant in fuel (I use 80% 98ron (93 AKI) unleaded MTBE pump gas plus 20% ethanol(one slight perk of not being in the US) in my 2015 Ford Focus ST, so basically E20) at different ratios such as 1:500, 1:200 and 1:100. I tried to not believe 1:100 as a good mix because it’s too concentrated and really could potential cause detonation, but every time when I use 1:100 I could certainly feel the difference, the car runs quieter and throttle response feels quicker, the car feels exceptionally different at high rpms, it just doesn’t feel like it’s losing power like it normally does at high rev range. I really really hope that you guys could make a video on this upper cylinder lubricant thing as it is a subject that very little people have studied but could potentially be useful.

Major Oil companies put motor oil right on the labels. General Motors and Ford Motor Company both use it in their name ,yet neither one had electric vehicles when they started.

Motor is the word for anything that makes rotating power, air motor in your impact, electric motor in your tesla, gasoline motor in my car, engines are motors but not all motors are engines.

So they probably lost power with the new rings vs the old loose rings, so they through a better carb and oxygenated fuel into it to get it above the old number.

Before the honing and new pistons, hp was 733. After the honing and pistons, hp was 774. Then after changing the carbs and fuel, it went up to 791.

No, watch it again. 773 HP was the number before the carb and fuel swap, so it was 40 up from the old hone, rings and pistons with a baseline tune up.

Lake, you are omitting too much detail. I presume all pistons are new. Question, what is the cause of the skirt scuffing on old pistons? Specs on Heads, camshaft and displacement? Which ring set was used and tension? Again, skipping the details.

As mentioned in the intro, this is a segment from the Engine Performance Expo.There is a lot more to this story on that channel and the Stapleton42 channel. All 8 pistons are the new style with the thinner rings. The baseline of 730 HP was the original full round pistons, thicker rings and hone. We made 765 HP updating just the pistons, rings and hone, but we ending up scuffing one of those pistons because we pushed the limits. This video shows how we fixed the scuffed cylinders and were able to reuse the Line 2 Line skirt coating to save 5 pistons from the first update rebuild. This time, we made 774 HP with the baseline carb and fuel. Dad's other engine made 792 HP with the bigger carb and the VP Q16 fuel. That's why we tested the bigger carb and VP Q16 fuel on this engine - it's an apples to apples comparison to the first engine, and they are within 1 HP of each other.

"How Much Power Are New Pistons, Rings and a Hone Worth" we'll never know.......should have tested same fuel, same carb...then we know the answer the question that is the title.

It was in the video. 773 HP was the number just from the hone, the pistons and the rings on the baseline carb and fuel.

All you did was pump more fuel through it to get the increase Piston and rings had nothing to do with it.

You say you saved 5 of the older pistons, but also say you used newer thinner rings. How did you use thinner rings on the old pistons, doesnt make sense. You also say the new pistons have smaller skirts, but surely you are not running different pistons. Were the pistons/rings the same weight? Reciprocating mass consumes power, especially at higher piston speeds. You dont mention what CC the engine is, or how you tested the old engine when it had ruined pistons. Was the oil identical, was it originally rated with imperial horsepower instead of standard. Were the rod bearings replaced. A lot not mentioned and also conflicting statements.

I see this totally backwards of how this is presented. You say you gained 60 hp. I say you was only giving up 60 using old school ring package on an injured high strung engine. Some leakdown or cranking compression #'s would have been useful but were excluded. Most peeps have seen very injured engines still run good enough you question your diagnostic tools. Would look bad if an engine has 50psi of cranking compression on 3 holes still made 700+

Simple answer to the question, it depends. As an example, if you have Nicom cylinders with really good rings in a really high rpm 4 banger, you will only hurt power from honing it.... If you honed it in 1970 after 12 beers with a dingleberry hone in the back yard, you will probably gain a significant amount of power and massively reduce blowby..... 🤣
