Yes you are right, but unlike what I feel you were alluding to, they were infact more likely to have slightly more bhp than advertised if anything!!! unlike the past 30 yrs or so manufacturers back then were more likely to actually quote slightly lower than expected power figures to allow for larger manufacturing variations and a larger percentage of manual assembly etc etc ( the old “Musta been built on a Friday afternoon” phrase springs to mind 😂) whereas nowadays (mostly due to fuel injection and ecu’s along with even further increased automation etc etc) vehicles all leave the factory with much closer tolerances and thus real world performance varies by far less and by way smaller amounts than they did decades and decades ago , “Blueprinting an Engine” is a phrase you never hear nowadays (because most the machining and tolerances etc are near perfect straight from the factory now 👍)

I have to give support for the Spitfire... for 3k not bad at all... The Mk IV was a detuned 1300 foe emissions, the later 1500 got a longer stroke engine (shared with the MG Midget) that restored the power to around 70 but brought its own issues....

The 1.3 was actually faster than the 1500 when tuned up, the mk 3 spitfire had the fastest engine of them all. Me and my family have had a few of them, mk2' s, mk 4s, 1500s ect. The 1.3 standard engine has a reasonable amount of power.

The thing is, the Triumph and the Mini, you can road trip them, but once you reach your destination there's nowhere to relax, sleep, etc. Betty is fun to drive, and when you get there, you can have a small meal, and a nap afterward. Beautiful

Agreed, although he either has a problem with the SU carbs or its not firing on all cylinder's, I know from owing 2 mk 4s, those cars can do 90 mph. He should check the spark plugs, ht leads ect and rebuild the SU's whatever it is, its an easy fix normally.

If you've got the old twin style propeller on the spitfire mod it to a quad, better airflow and cooling, also if I remember rightly there's a rear suspension mod that can swap from leaf spring to shocks, was looking at that for a herald 13/70 my dad had a few year back, some point when I can afford it I'll be going for a Triumph, fun to drive and easy to work on 😊

Also, the R.A.E restrictor mod (with an amusing name I won't repeat here because youtube might shadow delete my comment) allows the merlin engine to function properly while the spitfire is briefly pulling negative Gs, or better yet, the improved solution offered in the Bendix pressure carburettor. After you finish this series it would be cool to see if you could mod these not to sure of the legality there to keep mot exemption. For Betty an EJ20 or EJ22 I think there is a lot of support for this and will give better reliability and a bump in power for the spitfire a hyabusa swap with the appropriate appropriate bc coil overs and breaks. For the newly less rusty mini Honda b16b turbo alot of aftermarket support for this. Keep up the stellar work guys love the content

Taylor, please consider replacing the fuel filler cap on your Mini with a retrofit that sits flush to the body. If you have an accident then those protruding caps can shear off and potentially turn a bad accident into a fiery and fatal one. Also consider a modern fuel cell - the stock fuel tanks on old Minis are awful. I am saying this as the lucky survivor of a rollover in a 1980 Mini. They are great cars to drive but do not take them for granted.

The spitfires can do 90, there's something off with the SU carbs, if its struggling past 40, either that or its not firing on all four cylinders. I could do 60 no problem in the two mk4s I had, it gets a bit scary at 70, but they are surprisingly quick.

Yeah just needs a carb rebuild by the looks of it, either that or its fuel but it didnt seem like it was hunting so id say its the SU carbs r possibly the spark plugs, HT leads, rotor arm ect it should do 70 easy enough, they maxed out at 90.
