How Much Pressure Is in a Balloon?

I was curious how much pressure is in a balloon, so I test out how much pressure a Belbal 14-inch balloon can take. The balloon inflated a ton. Even the neck fully inflated. It burst into dozens of shreds and was extremely loud when it finally went.

A common blood pressure gage can also work, just convert to your units of choice. I was able to blow 1.7 to 2.7psi, like this: Mouth pressure 0.0193 mm Hg > psi conversion mm Hg psi Percent of 14 psi Lungs 90 1.740 12% Mouth 140 2.7072 19% .. FYI: The pressure changes around an airplane wing are quite small. For a Cessna they are on the order of 0.02 - 0.08 PSI change.

P.S. "mouth" means using your tongue as a piston with your throat closed off. I don't know if you know how to do that.

Test some cheep aliexpress inflatables and balloons and see if the inflatables hold up to their rated pressure of 0.5psi and maby see how under rated that pressure is

It would be interesting to test different sizes. Smaller balloons should get much tighter. I've had some 11 inch that were very hard to blow at the end.

Neat gauge! This gauge won't work for thin, long balloons, it must be a 5 PSI model, some very thin balloons might even require a pretty reasonable handpump to be inflated. I have pressure-tested a bunch of balloons some time ago, and the bigger the balloon gets, the less pressure is needed to inflate it. The initial spike in pressure would also gradually reduce, then it would climb very slowly until the balloon finally pops. Some older balloons might only see a very modest increase in pressure, in fact, you can inflate them directly using a hair dryer. The lower pressure from the hair dryer might prevent the balloon from popping and may be used as a "safer way" of doing it.

It would be the same like inflating, only with gauge and kickback valve or no pump attached.

Wow. What a durable balloon. I made my own digital pressure gauge too. My fav 18inch are usually pumped to around 0.3psi-ish, and most of the time it will burst around 0.45psi when new, or 0.35psi when it is used sveral times. I tried to measure q16 and it seems it can handle up to 0.7psi at best. (bigger balloon seems have lower avg pressure) FYI, Intex whale are rated for 0.43psi max. But I tried up to 0.6 ish while riding on them. I dont want to explode them however

Definitely try other brands. Belbal's have a reputation for being easy to neck, for instance. Also interesting would be some of those 36" Chinese paddle balloons versus a name brand 36" fluted one.

I have some test suggestions that I am to lazy and or have no time to do. like are balloons softer with blowing by mouth or pump and how many inflations with each type vs strength. for me it seems balloon are softer initially by mouth but they harden up as temp and or moisture or something stabilizes. maybe different brand of balloon differences because iv got a lot of different kinds from party city, walmart, family dollar etc, and there all different in stuff like smell strength and quality ( like defects). another thing is colour seems to have an effect too. like yellow and orange tend to be the strongest and longest lasting, white it usually soft, and black are usually really soft but weak and lose air very quickly. (at least really cheap black 12inch balloons)

Note that with pumps you actually have 2 stats that are somewhat independent, max delta pressure (pressure difference between inlet and outlet), and max flow, funnily enough max flow is reach when the pump is running at the lowest delta pressure, and max pressure while flow is 0 (or nearly 0), so a pump that is measures a low pressure might not be entirely useless if the flow is high. So I recommend also to get a flow meter and test some of the pumps that way And yes I would love to see you use this on inflates as well, a particular interesting one is a small beach bal vs a giant beach bal, especially if you can get your hands on a strain gauge/load cell as well; according to some one the back of an envelope calculations a larger inflate should show a higher strain at lower pressures
@Sixta16
@Sixta16 2 жыл бұрын
These two values by itself are still not enough. You would need to characterize the whole flow vs. pressure characteristic of the pump.
@BotchFrivarg
@BotchFrivarg 2 жыл бұрын
@@Sixta16 To compare pumps in reality yes a pressure vs flow graph would be useful, as a simplified model just assuming max pressure at 0 flow and 0 pressure at max flow works reasonable enough to discuss the advantages/disadvantages of different pump designs (of course in a spherical cow world)

With vacuum cleaners it is also deceiving to measure static pressure to conclude its real suction power, because the airflow through the actual nozzle during use is what counts. In real life you rarely need to crank it up to maximum, which only wastes energy and ruins the motor (and risk of overheat).

Doesn't the gauge measure the difference in pressure between the air in the balloon and the air outside it? So when it says 0.8 psi, the pressure inside is 14.7 psi + 0.8 psi = 15.5 psi?

Fairly well done, but a few comments.. Having the gage on a simple TEE at the balloon inlet can cause an error when the pump is running due to the flow in the hose past the Tee. Depending on the construction of the inside of the tee, it can cause a pressure change as air flows through it. In your case, it would be better to stop the flow to take balloon pressure readings. . It also doesn't appear you see much of the pressure decrease in the central region that is well known to occur. It may be the balloon. Once the 'neck' starts to fill, you are in the final increasing region. Also, It may be that you fill it so fast as there is a pressure drop after the initial peak. We typically see a slow decrease until the high pressure starts to build as the balloon nears bursting. .

Your paid your ass off for a pressure gauge? I remember mine was 20€ or such, but you can go cheaper by putting a barometer inside a well sealing plastic fridge box (those with lid clips at all sides and seals) with a hose attached. It will only display differential pressure and you may need to adjust the needle lowest to see full range, but for inflatables it works well.

I would like to test pressure on a bellball 250 and 350 my guess the 250 will get a higher psi and the difference between the crystal and the normal version i think crystals are stronger in my experience in my experience the crystal color ballons are even a bit stronger then a crystal clear balloon i think adding the color in the mix gives it a bit more strength what i also would like to know lets say a bellball 250 burst at 1.3 psi, the next i want to see inflated just before that level say 1.2 psi and leave it there for say 30mins my guess it will starting to go down in psi levels and then add pressure again till 1.2 and keep repeating that thill it burst would be nice to know how much air is in the balloon also maybe a cattex longneck could be tested last weekend i did get a bunch of balloons from Jenny's loons (from germany) and i did order some bellball 250 green soap and 2 350 (36") clear also i got some special Cattex 32" special made for Jenny loons balloons a bag of 7 crystal colored balloons round no neck i did test those it was the first time i did order them and they are very strong they feel thinner than a bellball 250 but even after overinflating one i could still sit on it on the bed with my 105kg weight and it did hold only after some bouncing it bursted. i really like those they are strong nice colors and cheap 7.77 euro for a bag of 7 so 1.11 a piece compaire to the bellball 250 soap they cost 3.39 a piece and are around the same size. But the bellball can get really big after some reinflating.

It would be nice to conduct a "proper" scientific research, that is, compare different balloon brands, balloon sizes, balloon colours, and always make three tests for each balloons in order to have an average! I'd gladly work with you if you need help with spreadsheets and stuff! I could even write a somewhat scientific report
