I was curious how much pressure is in a pool toy, so I brought out a giant pressure gauge to test a few toys out.
See how much pressure is in a balloon:

It is also fun to see how different chambers/parts of a toy can feel differently inflated even when all are connected (so pressure is the same everywhere, but the tension on the material isn't)
@HeathDragon
@HeathDragon Ай бұрын
Yes, that is correct. It's the same concept behind why the palm of a latex glove inflates but not the fingers or the body of a balloon but not the neck.
@BotchFrivarg
@BotchFrivarg Ай бұрын
@@HeathDragon Indeed and has the same reason behind it as why a larger toy is already overinflated with a lower pressure! surface area vs volume (or the famous square/cube law)

Mylar/foil balloons with complex shapes (e.g. ciphers or alphabet letters) often have an open shape instead of closed ring to ease pressure distribution if slightly overinflated (e.g. by heat and atmospheric pressure change), because this foil (actually PET like plastic bottles) is not very stretchy. Complex 3D figures (like Airwalker lifesize superheroes) even had limbs made as separately inflated flat shaped balloons those were only interconnected with dual side adhesive film, to prevent overinflating the main body or limbs looking slack. (Modern variants often have poseable plug-in joints those act as air duct and so don't have insulated chambers anymore.)

this video is a nice excursion into material science and technical mechanics. In Germany we call the formula for the material stress sometimes "Bockwurstformel" and with this formular its easy to understang, whay toys normaly rupture longitudinally

Good testing! The reason why why larger toys are less firmer is because of the larger surface area there is for the vinyl to stretch. I think this relates to hooke's law. But also the greater the volume of gas, the more you can compress it, since ideal gas laws are not linear iirc.

I'd love to see a similar video exploring GL-balloons (GL500, GL700, GL1200, etc). Would also be interesting with a video comparing Intex toys and those from Shosu that are made for adults to ride them. And how does rubberizing affect toys like this?

It’s saddening to see them die but also the information is very interesting and educational. I wonder what the difference is between riding an underinflated and firmly inflated float is, and what different stresses they can take? Or what is the maximum amount you can inflate a float before they become unsafe/too prone to bursting? Also do you have any plans on selling the dead inflatables, or do you repair them and use them as normal?

Do you have knowledge of diffusion of air in inflatables? I have a PP wolf and after two weeks the body feels noticeably softer. It's still in shape but definitely softer. I don't notice it as much for the legs. Can this be caused only by diffusion or is a micro leak more likely?
@HeathDragon
@HeathDragon 2 күн бұрын
Most likely there is a small leak somewhere. Air can diffuse through vinyl but extremely slowly. Think on the order of many months to a year or more to see signs of air loss from diffusion.

I had a good question.... so I've had an IW Tiger for a few months now, but something is starting to concern me. The front paws, and now the very edge of the face, are getting a little stiff. Is it because of temperature or is it getting rather dry? (It hasn't been outside and the room its in tends to get cold at night)
@HeathDragon
@HeathDragon Ай бұрын
A common cause for that is skin oils especially facial oils. Sometimes sunscreen or other oils can cause the plasticizer in the vinyl to come out and the material will become stiff.

Wonder how much a reinforced toy would take
@HeathDragon
@HeathDragon Ай бұрын
It wouldn't really take much more. The toy is growing because the vinyl is stretching and will eventually tear. Reinforcing the seams really only helps protect them from fatigue failures and strengthen tight negative curves or bad seams.

Why does the pressure go down before they pop exactly?
@HeathDragon
@HeathDragon Ай бұрын
Initially the material stretches portionally to the pressure. Eventually it reaches a point where it can no longer stay in equilibrium with the pressure inside of it. After that point it is in a runaway state that will result in bursting. As the toy rapidly stretches the pressure has to go down because the volume of the toy goes up.

@@HeathDragon I think it's just a coincidence, consider an ideal scenario, for a thin-walled sphere, the stress on the wall can be estimated as Pr/2t, where P is internal pressure, r is radius, and t is thickness of the wall. Assuming that the deformation is elastic, the stress can also be expressed as Ee, where E is the material's young's modulus, and e is its axial proportional deformation. And since there's deformation, Pr/t should be changed to Pr(1+e)/(t/(1+e)^2) to account for changes in radius and thickness of the material. Thus, we have the following: Pr(1+e)/(t/(1+e)^2) = Ee. After some manipulation we get P = Et/r * e/(1+e)^3. Obviously as e goes towards infinity P goes to zero, with maxima of P=4Et/27r at e=0.5, so it will increase first and decrease afterwards even if the toy can hold the air. e=0.5 means the toy is 50% larger, and it seems to be in the same ballpark as what's in the video.
