You don't have to guess at the weight of the empty tank it can actually vary a lot from manufacturer to manufacturer. The actual weight of the empty tank that you own is stamped on the shield around the valve. That's the weight that they use when they fill them. For example, the tank that I own is 19 lbs, stamped on the tank. If I used his idea that each propane tank weighs 15 lbs and got the same weight he did my tank would be very close to empty and I would definitely run out while grilling.
