Chris, you missed one of the biggest one. That 6-figure purchase will realistically only be used 2-3hrs a day if you’re not part of that cohort of justified car buyers. SG is tiny so end to end even with traffic we’re looking at 4hrs or so max, with most folks driving less than 2.5hrs a day. The rest of the 21-22hrs, the car just sits there using up space that you pay for as well. Instant 20% depreciation after purchase, inevitable accident repairs, lastly, odds are high that the supposed 4-7 seater will be ferrying 1-2 passengers max 90% of the time.

Oh man, I love Singapore. I really do. Can't imagine living else where. But I am also an avid driving enthusiast. Driving a car to me is not a chore, it's enjoyment. So it kind of just make it harder for me to justify if I really want to live here until death. Especially since neighbouring countries like Australia or even Malaysia, you have a perfect excuse to own a car and drive every where yourself. That really appeal to me! The idea of having to drive 1 hour plus to get your groceries make me feel like I want to do it more, after all it's just an excuse for me to drive.

You can buy one if you are really rich or your job requires a car to bring you everywhere. If not, it does not make sense to buy a car.

Ngl, I know a couple who earns 5.5k combined and they are definitely struggling. I've ever suggested to them to sell the car but they said very "malu" to downgrade lifestyle and not cool. Some people are willing to go through the stress of having so many financial commitments just to impress others. Meanwhile my wife and I are earning twice as much, and we have no car, live in a 4-room flat and our monthly expenditures are surprisingly half our salary as well lol. I know I can sleep soundly at night knowing that I can actually just quit my job and not work for a couple of years because we've been saving & investing half of our salary for the past 6 years.

Also ppl need to know the difference between good debt and bad debt. A mortgage is an asset and hence a good debt. Bad debts are stuff like "luxury" goods, motor vehicles (in SG), other wants (iphone, etc). Or just be like me #debtfree

don't worry, prices will come down around 6-9 months before the next election. but if you thinking 30k COE (like the last down point), it wont happen. At most go down to 70-80k.

No cars for the rich, BMW (bus mrt walk) for the really rich #richvsreallyrich. This bear repeating, my CEO told me that while he was working for a hedge fund, he saw the founder strolling in wearing t-shirt and flip-flops. After the meeting he went home and someone wanted to book him a private car but he just chose to take the MRT (tube) home instead. This is someone who owns a property in Monaco and has multi-millions to his name.

Driving a car can feel so stupid many times : go big round just to goto a spot you can quickly walk there. Or you cannot get out of car until you find a lot to park. So stupid!! We must support the policies. COE is worth it! 👍😃 compared to India, SG is so good. Compared to Africa, sg is so good. So COE is good for you and me😅. Higher COE means if you drive a car, you got bragging rights. Can attract girls. Make them think you are rich. So COE is worth it
