I think Ginny in the movies is overhated. Rewatched it again not so long ago, their romance wasn't a massive focus in the films, but it also didn't just come randomly. Their attraction for one another was hinted and forshadowed in like 4 different movies. She is for sure quiet and a background character a lot of the time, but you can't say she was any worse than most movie romance interests outside Ron and Hermione. She just usually isn't the focus of the action.

I think the problem for the weasly brothers is this: There is a lot of talk going on in the family, when Bill, Charlie and Percy are not around, so naturally their name gets mentioned a lot in the book even when they are not present in the scene. The same goes for different other characters like James Potter. Lilly gets her screentime from the scene of her death, where james is already dead and from snape's memories. James is present mostly in harry's thoughts and the talks with Sirius and Lupin.
@remyraloni8386 Жыл бұрын
Yes the parameters for this comparison lack for these characters. Especially for Lilly and James because they are mentioned more in the films than we actually see them. One reason for the James and Lilly difference in the books and movies is that most of the book mentions say things like "You look just like James, but have your mothers eyes." There were also other times where she was mentioned as his mother while James was mentioned by name, such as all the times he has visions of his mom being killed by Voldemort. That would give James more mentions, though Lilly likely had much more (or at least comparable) "screen time" in the books. The same is true of Nagini, who is often called a snake, but is in the background or taking part in more book passages, such as the whole time Nagani possessed Bagshots body. I would also be curious how many more mentions each professor gets if you count people calling them Professor. Good job. It would be awesome to see how much time people actually had in the books, but that would be an insane task, and your solution is a great one.

I think it makes sense that a lot of the minor characters in early books rank a good bit higher for movie time. The books get so much longer as they go, while the movie lengths stay about the same across the series, with the exception of book 7 of course. So someone like Lockheart being only featured in book 2 for example. Book 2 only accounts for about 7% of the whole book series by pages, while movie 2 takes up about 13.5% of the runtime of the full series of movies. So proportionately we get nearly twice the potential time with Lockheart
@j134679Ай бұрын
Yes, a more apt comparison would have been to take the total reading time for their appearance on the book based on an average reading speed, and compare it to the overall time it takes to read the series. Those percentages should then be compared to screentime vs movie series runtime.

This is really interesting! Thanks for taking the time to do this. It sheds a lot of light on the differences between books and the movies based on them. However, I wonder how things would look if you measured "book time" in different ways. I understand why you chose mentions (because you can hit ctrl-F and count the number of hits). However, characters are not always referred to by name -- they might be pronouns ("he" instead of "Dobby") or other ways ("Harry's Uncle" instead of "Uncle Vernon", "The Minister" instead of "Cornelius Fudge"). And you get mentions in passing of characters that might skew your data (for example, Snape often gets discussed in the books even when he is not involved directly in the books' action). I'd love to see a version of this where you looked at book scenes in more detail. In other words, look at the books on a scene-by-scene basis, list the characters who have major involvement in that particular book scene, and then count the number of words/pages to quantify how long the scene is. I think the results would be roughly similar, but there would be some critical differences. I think Moody/Barty Crouch is a good example. Really, Moody's screen/book time in Goblet should go almost entirely to Barty Crouch, but since Moody's name pops up instead of Crouch's, you get highly skewed results (as you pointed out). You could also look at different metrics like the percentage of scenes that involve the given character, percentage of total screen/booktime, and so on. Fascinating! Thanks again.

I think they missed a trick with the movies by not introducing and writing in Cedric in the earlier films (at least TPOA). Would have made his death more impactful.
@kaylee5438 Жыл бұрын
He wasn't in the earlier books except a brief moment in year 3 when he plays Harry at quidditch

@@kaylee5438 i know but he could have been written in a little. He was still at Hogwarts.

I thought it was carried out, perfectly. No need to always familiarize the audience so well with a character. I was more stunned watching Cedric get mu®d3®d than when a lot of recurring characters were, and part of it was due to the fact I thought the franchise was possibly introducing him as a new regular. It felt real, and I even felt the grief of his father, despite his small role. It was brilliant.

Wow it is nuts though how dirty the older weasley brothers were done in the movies, I think a lot of people who I’ve talked to who’s only watched the movies don’t know that Bill, Charlie and Percy are also weasley children, I understand Charlie but the fact they don’t remember Percy and Bill either who are in the films speak volumes. Percy was just there and shouted about being a prefect and head boy for a couple of movies then disappeared and then Bill suddenly showed up in deathly hallows with scratches on his face so s lot of people would just be confused to where he came from.

This is actually really interesting video. Thanks for doing the hard work. I knew about 90% of those stats "knew" "Imagined" by reading the books many many times, and watched the movies too. So its still kinda interesting to see in real numbers.

And I would be interested in number of mentions in books .
@noudfreriks1018 Жыл бұрын
Crazy how much work you put in. Just one tiny remark: book mentions doesn’t nescecarily equate book appearance, Bill, Charlie and Percy for example were frequently mentioned conversationally so they wouldn’t be in the scene in that case.
@onlyonekpopfan4842 Жыл бұрын
Very impressive, and very fun! My biggest takeaway is that movies likes putting animals in frame, and that a lot of the actors that will forever be those characters in my mind have like two minutes of screen time.

It's crazy how much screemtime I thought many characters had compared to their real amount of screentime.

The number 7 really is magical, I guess ;-) Love how all the Top 7 spots were perfect matches!

I noticed that a lot of the temporary love interests, i.e. krum, mcclaggan, and Cho had a screen time advantage, which makes sense but still interesting to see how the filmmakers prioritized the teenage drama 🙄

I would leave this as soon as I realized that it'll take me a month to do, amazing dedication to still go through with it. Good job! What's also amazing to me is Harry's screen time. Almost thrice as much as his best friends, while in theory they were basically living together for 75+% of the time.
@ImmaHonda Жыл бұрын
Voldemort is: - The one ranked number 6 on the list - The one who's film rank and novel rank are both 6 - The 6th one with a perfectly balanced appearance in novel and film I'd say that was a bit too on the nose, but he clearly has none.
@janedunsworth8728 Жыл бұрын
Interesting and well done! I have a thought about Nagini though -- was she referred to a lot as just "a snake" and not by name, lowering her supposed mentions in the books? For example, when Harry saw in his mind her attack on Arthur, how many times did it refer to her and did it ever use her name, because he wouldn't have known it at that point?
@ESparkAster Жыл бұрын
Yeah when Harry and Dumbledore were discussing Horcruxes they said: The Snake instead of Nagini
@bram.desmet8687 Жыл бұрын
She's always with Voldemort so if you see him on screen, you see her too without the need to mention that every time. It's hard to compare these 2 things, because there is a huge difference between mentions and presance, like you see with James & Lily. Even in the films, they mention James more, but he is not in the picture at that moment and everytime when it's about that night the Potters died, we see Little Harry and Lily.

In the book, Harry is annoyed that Mad-Eye shows him that picture of the original Order of the Phoenix. In the movie, it's repurposed as a heart-warming moment with Sirius. Inexplicably, Sirius comes to the train station with the picture despite them having been living at the same house for several days beforehand. Movie Sirius says, "What's life without a little risk?" which aligns well with the Book Sirius who had repeatedly cautioned Harry not to be reckless in Goblet of Fire. This is a masterclass in book to film adaptation.

im still hoping the 7 books will be remade in a series format. that would give the whole story so much more life. i always miss how much sidestories are missing in the movies. the most missing part for me is the origin story of voldemort in the halfbloodprince...

I think the reason greyback wasn't mentioned was due to censoring issues. Alot of his lines were very graphic and disturbing so, it was probably easier to cut his lines and give them to another character. I know they cut down bellatrix's torture of Hermione due to censoring issues so, I'm assuming that's why.

Incredible video!!!! And a huge eye opener about how much time the characters were actually on screen. Hard to believe that Harry was on screen roughly 8 hours and 28min more than his biggest school rival!

Dan was on the screen for amost 9 hours and most interestingly around 6 more hours (give or take) than Rupert and Emma. Obviously he's the main character but until this video i never realized how HUGE of a screen time difference he had from the other two. I expected a big difference but not THAT big of a difference. SLAYYY!!

What a cool concept for a video Morgan! I can imagine it took a lot of time to compile. I would be curious how you would compare those that have dialogue in the book though, as that would certainly shift the ranking quite a bit. Either way, solid work!

I think for some of the animals it makes sense that they are decently higher in the movies as they can serve as a nice transition scene in the movies. EDIT: wow I'm really surprised by Hedwig as I really expected the owl to be much higher in the movie compared to the book.

Impressive and amazing! I would never in a million years have thought about doing this awesome video and even less having the fortitude to actually do it. Excellent work! Now I'm curious about the same in a book by book comparison :). Also, it would be interesting to measure the characters in the books by how many paragraphs they were active in instead of a name count.

It makes sense that the animals get a decent amount of screentime. They can be used in scenery scenes or just nice extra's that make a scene more fun to look at when the people are just talking.
