At first when you suggested charging by the hour I thought, Ray freaking Edwards is making THAT suggestion? Hmm...this is actually a good suggestion. This takes into account the lifestyle you want as a freelancer. BTW Ray, My first copy without any copy or business knowledge, done and sent in ~12mins, made me essentially £1500/h (...in my teens!) At that rate not many clients can afford me, and NOW? That I have centuries of copywriting knowledge (yours in there too Ray, so thanks!), talent plus my bent to being an adman (you know what that means Ray) BTW, After writing that first contest email for Yahoo! and in-Focus, I never realised my gift for YEARS. Rectifying that now.

Ray, have you heard about those conspiracy theories where they put chips in people's heads? They might be able to make a believer out of me yet. Here's why: I was casually perusing through some Facebook copywriting groups, looking for some questions that popped out at me. Something I could answer and offer my assistance in some way. You know the groups I'm talking about, right? You just happen to have one. ;) Anyways... Out popped a question: "How do I get copywriting clients if I don't have any testimonials?" I love this question. I see it all the time. There are a lot who get stumped about that part. It is a little bit about the chicken before the egg, right? Which one comes first. People had answered him. And like a good little hooman, driven by the most powerful of emotions, curiosity, I clicked through to read. However, I saw some comments that didn't quite sit right with me. A singular piece of advice that seems to fly around the "goo-roo" circles was being chanted by a few misguided individuals. A piece of advice when acted upon grabs ahold of you like a giant squid wrapping its tentacles around a Viking ship, pulling the screaming warriors into the dark abyss of the ocean, never to be heard from again. Its just one word. But that singular word perks up the ears of bargain hunters and basement dealers, making them foam at the mouth like a rabid squirrel guarding its treasure trove of acorns. It is a disgustingly simple word. A word that should be condemned to the swear jar for eternity, along with other ghastly words that shall remain unnamed to keep this comment as clean as possible. if you haven't guessed already, that word... ...even typing it leaves a bad taste in my mouth... ...is FREE. Like Smokey the Bear, I had to stamp this fire out before it spread through to the other saplings, robbing them of the chance to grow up and be strong oak trees. Before people bought into the idea that the only way to move forward was to do a thing that no human should ever be expected to do; Work for free. I jumped into action. Junior Ranger Jeff reporting for duty, SIR! To paraphrase my response: "Position yourself as an expert and be seen as someone who can help people, and people will see you as THE expert that can help THEM, and you will never have to work for free." What does this have to do with your video and me having a chip in my brain? Simple... Someone else responded and tagged me with a question. The question was easy. Easy to ask. But I knew it had a complicated answer and I wanted to be as delicate as I possibly could because I knew it wasn't really the answer they wanted to hear, and would then pose more questions than it really answered. And before I knew it, I was sitting there, thinking about the future questions that they were going to bring up. I wanted to try and answer them before the need ever arose. I sat there, staring at the question for a while, scratching my head, trying to figure out the best possible way I can answer this person and give them the most help in the process. A little bit of insight into what to expect. I typed out 3 different answers, but none of them felt like I was putting my best foot forward to help this person gain some insight. After going back and forth between the different answers, the whole thing started to give me a headache. That pounding you feel inside your head as your heart starts racing and you feel the anxiety building up like a keg under pressure, ready to explode. Under the stress of the moment, I quickly typed out an answer and hit send. You know that feeling you get when you can scratch something off of your list and feel proud that you got it done? Yea...that feeling didn't last more than 5 mins for me. It was nibbling away at me, just sitting in the back of my brain, like a drowsy lion just released back into its cage, shaking its head, trying its best to wake up. It is going to be one pissed off lion when it wakes up, I tell ya. It woke up alright and roared right in my face. As I wiped the lion's spittle from my face... ...I quickly deleted my answer and was preparing to type the one I should have typed out in the first place. But guess what? I didn't get the chance. Because at the very same time, I got an alert on my phone. BING. Oh look, it's an email from Ray. From you. These are the emails I always open. Click. You want to answer a very important question that has some people scratching their heads... "How much should you charge for copywriting?" I legit looked around for cameras. Why? Because this was the EXACT question that this very lovely person had asked. I smirked. Now... I could have easily just typed in the exact same answer you gave. I mean, I already had it typed up from before. Instead... I apologized and said that Ray was on the ball and had just answered her question, but in video form. I gave her the link and pointed her to the best possible answer that she could have received, yours. I mean...after all, the person in question was asking it in your very own Facebook group. Now you see why I might believe those conspiracies about chips in my brain? It was uncanny to get your email just as I was about to give her the exact same answer you did. Talk about feeling like my brain was just invaded by Elon Musk and his brain chip company, Neuralink. It really shook me. I recovered and laughed it off though. And was relieved to know that you are definitely one of the good guys, steering the people in the right direction, like a lighthouse in a storm, keeping the ships from wrecking themselves against the jagged rocks, allowing sailors to see their families for a happy reunion. You are keeping people safe. But... I'm close by, and I've got my eye on you, Ray. ;) Have a good one! -- JCL PS: I've got my tinfoil hat ready for next time, just in case.

@@JeffLepage, I have no words for the text I've just read. This is brilliant! Are you a copywriter? If so, is there any way I can get in touch with you? Even if you don't answer, I am very grateful to you for writing down this magnificence of a text. I gotta admit I learned a lot just from reading it!
