@@imawarrior313 I've incorporated several over the years, but my foundation is West coast Kang Duk Won karate, Tracy's kenpo, JKD, and lately submission grappling for a couple of years.(I wrestled some in college, but didn't think of it as a martial art in those days) If I find techniques from any system that work for me, I use them, like Muay Thai and boxing. Really, it all blends together. I'm not saying I'm good, just a lot better than I was.

Very true and to the point. As a brown belt with 48 years, and 2 kids. I have found early mornings to be the key. Workout at 5am for 1 hr. everyday. Hit the mats at least 3 times a week in the gi. If possible train no/gi the days in between gi days. Study if you can not train. It is about making the effort and getting after it. Another great option is teaching. Especially kids classes. It shores up your fundamentals. Roll smarter not harder. Oss!

Great video! Thank you for the advice. I used to train twice a week. I'd always feel really tired after sessions. This week I challenged myself to see how many sessions I could do. I managed 11 classes this week and, crazy thing is, I actually feel less tired after sessions now than I did after sessions going twice a week. I think your body gets used to what you do and adjusts itself. P.S. I'm a full-time med student, I'm married AND I have a part-time job three days a week. Take the time you used to waste doing random stuff (like replying to videos on KZbin lol) and train instead!

It depends on what your goals are, like Master Dave said. If you want to be a world champ, then eat, sleep, train like an athlete. I have learned one thing though, don't go 100% at any regular training session, whether it's Jiu Jitsu, weight lifting, cardio, conditioning, etc... If you're limping or crawling out the exit, you're going too hard. Save 100% for game/comp day.

At 44 with a family my body wont let me do much more than 3 days a week BJJ and 3 days weights. Any more that that and I start getting hurt and burned out. I guess if I was super rich, 20 years old and juicing hardcore it would be an option to train that way.

Just finished watching another one of your videos, and man, you just inspired me! I'm 34 years old, and just started BJJ 2 months ago. I've been brawling and amateur fighting pretty much my entire life, so I understand some basic concepts that can translate. Breath and Ego Control, while in the clench, being some of those concepts. That said however, I've found myself under the tutelage of someone whom rushes through too many concepts. As such, I've been showing up, gaining the mat time, and doing the drills that they want me to do, but once I get into grappling, I will try to use the moves that were taught if I come across the proper position, or can obtain the proper position. Otherwise, at first I went in and just grappled at random, getting destroyed for a month. Now I see how things are going, who prefers what positions, and so I've started researching how to counter their favored positions. As such, I countered them with a weave, a sweep, and a roll to my favored position. In another roll too that same day, I finally landed the Gubber Guard to Submission, and it was Gubber Guard to Canto Choke, for the first time and with intention to have done so. After having watched this video, and one of your others, I realize that I need to REALLY focus on those moves for a month. Then let them go, and practice another set of moves from take down, mount, to submission. Learning counters and concepts, is great and all... It will provide me with insights on what I am missing, and where I am missing it. However, I get the feeling that if I work on one thing... Like.... Butterfly Guard until I can obtain a specific submission from it, then work the remaining angles and submissions from butterfly guard. Then I'm going to be so much better off than if I learned a bunch of concepts that I can't connect.

Did start by doing three hours in two 1,5 h session/week. Weeeeeeel things kinda got out of control and end up doing 9 hours/week, HJJ 1,5 h mo & we, KB & BJJ 2,5 h tu & th and 1 h MMA sa. For a week after which had to take a long break, 40+ body just couldn't handle too much too fast. Got humble and started from low, just two sessions a week and now SLOWLY adding more lessons, around 5,5 h/week now. So it's not just the time & money.

I'm 43 and just started BJJ. I used to be a triathlete doing up to 18 hours a week of cardio so I thought I could do a ton of BJJ and weights. Turns out no. I was constantly sore from 3 days of 2 hours of BJJ and 1.5 Muay Thai and then weights or cardio in the morning. So I have backed down the weights. My body genetics plus my age aren't conducive to building a lot of muscle unless I juice and I'm not doing that. I still lift but it's much less than I was doing. Also days I train BJJ, I don't do anything more than a few miles of running those days.

If your not training for the Olympics, or a high rank tournament, or running your own Dojo, never understand this mentality. I get it's fun, but man, balance should come to mind the older you get. You're concentration should be on helping others at some point, not yourself. Foreign countries understand a disciple mentality more then any other. It's why they do so well in MMA, Wrestling and Judo @ the highest levels. BJJ is a young sport, but give it some time, and Russia, Ukraine, France, and Mongolia will start doing well on the BJJ circuits too. It's very American to hang onto your youth versus knowing when its time to hand it over.
