Really interesting information - just got my brown recently from a Royce black belt - my journey was slightly different with 1 year at white, almost 5 years at blue, about 2 1/2 at purple…turning 58 in March - tough road, but so worth it.

The only belt that truthfully mattered to me was blue belt, which i obtained 2 Thursday's ago after 3.5 years of training. The rest i don't care for, n will come all in time. I don't care about the rest of the belts. But! I know these belts will feel like great accomplishments as they come. Yet, the blue belt was a personal goal i had.

What if a student wants to stay as a white belt indefinitely and doesn’t want to participate in promotions. Would you or most instructors be okay with them just coming in and training and working through your curriculum but just stay as a white belt?

Stopped watching at "you hate because you envy them". What a stupid argument. There are many more successful gyms than GU that don't get the same hate. A lot of hate started because Rener gave out blue belts online to people who never sparred which was ridiculous. That's just 1 of many reasons.

I disagree. I’m 59yrs old blue belt ( so I’m biased). Ryron & Renner Gracie say that age, weight, size, etc. all make a difference with ranking. My thoughts are that if we look it your method of belt ranking, that would mean that as you get old and can’t perform anymore then you should give back your black belt and lower your rank to where you could compete with other similar belts! Helio Gracie at 90 could not compete with Helio Gracie at 30.

I train boxing all my life. Came in 5th in golden gloves in Texas. Also practiced taekwondo for about 5 or so years. So I have a good amount of mma experience in my background. I joined bjj in April this year. And man, it was the most humbling experience I’ve ever had. I came in thinking I could probably handle myself since I knew a few different martial arts. I was so wrong. I’m 8 months in and I love it. I’m here to stay.

It’s a humbling experience for everyone. Love it when people experience that “Ah-ha” moment.
Bjj needs standardized criteria. There's just too much subjectivity with awarding belts. Too many ego driven Sensei's

Gene Lebell is a character, and story teller. He was a very successful stuntman, and if he was going around beating up his A-List stars like Seagal or Embarrassing Bruce Lee i imagie he wouldn't work in hollywood long. The Seagal thing was more of, let me get you in a full choke and see if you can escape not really a fight. Not many could get in a full choke and escape with a highly decorated black belt but even so Lebell added to it. As for Bruce. Lee loved learning as much as teaching, so Bruce showed him some things and Lebell showed Bruce. Once Bruce died thats when Lebell started adding to the story. I also read in Richard Bressler's book Lebell didn't want no part of any Gracie's when they were beating his students at his school. Also Bruce did learn from Lebell but he also learned a form of Jiu Jitsu from Wally Jay called small circle Jiu jitsu. Wally Jay was high ranking in Judo as well as Danzin Ryu Jiu Jitsu before founding the Small Circle style that implemented both among others. Gene Lebell likes to add to his own Legend but i. His defe se he was a Pro Wrestler as well.

I just received my brown belt two days ago. Have been doing BJJ for a about 25 years but spent a large portion of that training with friends without grading. When i started grading, everything accelerated and my enjoyment grew exponentially. I looked at this video and other brown belt "expectation" videos so many times in the last couple of weeks. They were quite enlightening and i'm grateful to those who put them together.

Hi Professor Ryan, You may want to change the audience for the latest two videos to not be under "for kids" so that the comment section may open up again. I was wondering if you could also address the Jiujitsu in MMA by Kron Gracie's recent fights in the UFC by any chance since he is the son of GM Rickson. Hope all is well

Gracies are an organisation that grades some, and hates the autistic dedicated student who speaks up. 2 brothers set off on a journey. Only the one without a diagnosis of autism got the Black Belt. The Autistic one didnt even get a Blue belt. Guess who competed and won for the Gracies first? The Autistic one! (They have to turn off comment on new videos now, rather than answer to the students...)

I think you could talk about THAT if you got a group of people all willing to share their experiences. On your own, in your car, when you start the conversation by saying you hope we are doing well... Life is hard. All GRAPPLING IS is SHITTING your pants so that when the other CRAPPLER smells the stink he or she runs away intimidated. Shit stink bombs can do some real damage to the sensitive, delicate nostrils. I am not a black belt yet, but I think black belt is a homoerotic feel of a mature grappler. You don't just know jiujitsu, you understand it; you explode into razor sharp counter attacks from bad positions, you seamlessly connect submissions from various positions, you seem creepy to beginners, purple belts think you are a monster and try to emulate you, your friends and family don't understand why you like grappling sweaty men so much, etc. You can put someone in a Twister, escape a Twister, coach five people to try three different guard passes on you. You know a ton of fancy moves, but can get some blue belt with the same basic armbar after telling them it's coming. As for affairs some black belts have with female students, well... girls smell nicer.

Because BJJ stand up is trash! As a former Greco national level Competitor the only Competition I have are Judo people and other Wrestlers. Being able to throw somebody directly into the submission with the wind knocked out of them is a competitive advantage!😂

Rolls was the family champion, up until the day he died. It's well known that Rickson was better, could and had beaten Rolls one on one, but because the brothers respected each other and the family chain of command so much, Rickson never told anyone he beat his brother, and on the off chance they faced each other in a tournament, Rickson would concede the match. No one was better than Rickson. NO ONE.

My biggest problem with BJJ as a grappling art is the passive way that mat bullies are dealt with. Recreational Freestyle, Catch Wrestling, Judo, and Sambo all deal VERY directly and firmly with mat bullies. I've always loved it. Jitz rounds we all can literally *see* the bullying happening. But everyone shrugs awkwardly and goes back to rolling uncomfortably.

I feel very fortunate to have lucked into a school for my kids that emphasizes self defense. They always start sparring from their feet, they practice takedown and take down defense regularly and they practice pinning and getting up from the bottom a lot. My kids are about a year in and just got there third stripe and are just now getting more heavily into submissions. Kids are 9, 10, and 11.

Interesting video. I began this sport/art in 2002. Took it one baby step first, baby steps became kid's step, then teen's steps and eventually full grown and full fledge adult's step. Today, I can throw myself in any given move/technique/drill and go from there, no longer lost, no longer lose all time. BJJ is now my 10 000 piece puzzle, love it. I still hit walls and blues but they are more rare with time, and I build myself out of it, and discover new phases to train and drill.

My rib injury was from a punch--body shot on the left side. I agree; rest is important no matter how much I wanted to train. Also, ibuprofen helped with pain, swelling, and fever symptoms, and laying on an ice pack helped a lot too.

I believe you're a good guy, you just keep repeating the lies of the Gracies and you don't feel like calling out the BS. It's fine. It's a little childish to consider different opinions universally as "hating", but that's fine too. Btw, luta livre was founded by Tatu who was a catch wrestler (and beat George Gracie). It's Brazilian Catch Wrestling and that tournament has nothing to do with modern MMA as far as GJJ vs "free fighting". If you want to see how well GJJ works in MMA, watch the actual GJJ "fighters" being completely irrelevant in the octagon as soon as people who knew how to fight came in 30 years ago. It's a fact, do I have to list the fights where they got embarrassed? I mean, all the way down to Rolles Gracie being KOed by Marius with a sloppy overhand. A former strongman. The talk about fighting is totally crazy, you need to train in MMA to realize how insane what you said is. You need to take your opponent down to use jiu jitsu, how do you take down people who know wrestling? You get pieced up before you can clinch (because you can't strike) if you don't do MMA, if you can reach the clinch at all. Then? You pull guard where it's raining knuckles? Modern MMA fighters are not Dan Severn, almost nobody finishes people from the guard. Let's say he slips on a banana peel and you get on top, they spring back up in 3 seconds, BJJ doesn't teach people how to control the opponent to the level that's required today. You need to use leg rides, tilts, bars, and keep them down. That's wrestling though. I mean, it's not like I'm making this stuff up, you can see it on TV on every UFC card. Including the ones Kron embarrassed himself on. I only talked about undisputable facts, these are not my conjectures or emotional responses AKA "hating".

MMA is not the same as Vale Tudo. Different rule set, altogether. But, I DO like MMA, as well. And your points are all good/valid.
@ddwfw2 ай бұрын
@@KamaJiuJitsu Sure, in MMA you have rounds so you can literally have your opponent in a rear naked and they stand you up when the bell rings. Still, in 5 minutes Kron showed no progression towards a possible win. It's very hard to argue that the result would have been different with no time limit. Actually, his heart may have gotten him permanent damage if that would have been the case. The old Gracie tactic of surviving because you're too close for the opponent to do damage until you find an opportunity is gone, people now don't make those big mistakes and they can create space to strike. Ground and pound has evolved, being on bottom is not a winning strategy and you take way more damage than in the vale tudo days due to the different level of fighters. The game has changed greatly. Btw, vale tudo rules are not a real fight either. I know you didn't say that in this particular video, but the Gracies subtly make that claim and they present GJJ as king of the streets because of its vale tudo success. There's a reason why people made a circle around Rickson when he was fighting Duarte on the beach, he makes himself vulnerable to people jumping in and kicking him when he's down. You need boxing (at least) to stay away as much as possible, and the grappling to take people down and do your thing on the ground if you need to.
