That’s because India’s tax per capita is like Somalia 😶😶😶 I live in Basel currently working for a Swiss multinational Pharma giant. Income tax in Switzerland is lower compared to many Western and Nordic European countries. But the city is way too expensive. Europe has facilities because it doesn’t need to spend on building infrastructure, provide freebies to millions of extremely poor people and not maintain a strong standing army to ward away threats from expansionist China and a radical Pakistan. India’s population is 4 times that of Europe. Control it. Bring in population control bill, maybe a one child policy and no benefits for 2 kids and tax people with 3 kids (it’s draconian but tough problems require tough solutions). Then maybe 50 years from now, you’ll reap benefits of it.

Tax the rich!! High time government does that ... Completely agree with you about removing the deductions and bring down the tax slabs. The insurance companies are just playing with us, they make bank and leave us stranded. I've been trying to get health insurance for the senior citizens in my house and its a nightmare--insurer doesn't give insurance or the premiums are just too high. Salaries aren't able to meet household demands. I'm so frustrated!! :(

Faye - I have heard from people in Delhi that political parties accept donations, take a 7-10% cut and then give the rest back in cash, while allowing the individual doing so to claim 100% tax deduction for donating to political parties. This leads me to believe that the government deliberately keeps tax high so it creates all these diversions of money into their coffers as it forces people to go look for such illegitimate ways to save on their tax outgo. So my hope is less that the system will cleaned up because the incentives for political parties are not aligned to do it

Do add tax on EPF contributions above 2.5 lacs in a year. My dad, all of 90 years, a pensioner has to pay tax (no one is spared). I drove from Delhi to Uttrakhand- no street lights in 250 km of highway while close to INR 400 paid one way through fast-tag. So much for governance on 50% tax I am paying.

The tax on over 2.5 Lakh PF contribution was actually a big blow to private sector employees who earn their retirement out of their own contributions to their retirement fund. It is ok to have some limit, but 2.5 L is just bizarre. Moreover it should be increased annually to account for inflation

Tax the rich! looks sexy on paper but results will be terrible in reality. Govt did a good job in making sure income tax adherence increases but now its time they go bold and tax EVERYONE (regardless of what profession you are from) just based on your income. They linked aadhar - pan - bank account - mobile number (our minds, hearts, kidneys) they have data on everything. As more people come under tax payments automatically tax rates can be decreased but the flip side, the opposition may just come and do romantic statements that if they come to power they will remove taxes and govt will fall.

Rather than comparing corporate tax vs individual tax we need to take a deeper look at the many ways in which governments are a) using tax money, where ever it came from, to build up their own electoral prospects b) simply wasting money. And then we need to stop them both. India needs a strong taxpayers union. Countries like Australia and New Zealand have such organizations that are supported by the middle-class and these organizations help keep a check on government spending.

They have no solace anywhere leave alone saving/building their wealth.There are so many pani puri walas, dosa walas, full time help, electricians, plumbers who earn pretty well but don't come under the tax net. Excellent analysis!❤ my understanding of economy has improved now. Direct taxes increased by 182%. Out of which majority is paid by individuals. Out of 140 crore, only 2 crore pay tax. Solution is to reduce income tax, increase corporate tax, corporate should give good pay hike this time as their profits have become 4 times in last 5 years due to massive cut in corporate tax which did not result into private investment. So govt should also reduce regulations and promote ease of business.

As the country's 1%, I'm still OK with the tax numbers I'm paying.. however what we get in return is getting much worse than what life was before the tea seller came to the stage. Law and order is much worse than before, city roads are terrible (Bangalorean here), if these 2 alone were fixed then I'll consider taxes well spent. That apart air, water and land pollution is alarming, citizen rights are zilch and it would seem religional madness (all of them being idiotic) and irrational support of criminal behavior is at an all time high. Health insurance, vehicle insurance and the honey trapping LIC are scams since time immemorial so no surprise there. Every democratic nation pays duties, IT, GST, VAT etc, difference is we get the least in return and any complaint is quickly dismissed off as anti whatever. I belong to the majority religion here BTW before accusations fly thick and fast, and that too in the General category, so I've always had to work harder and pay more thanks to quotas and anti general quota behavior overall 😉

The change is to hit on the point. Since voting has become the driver of everything so the 1.6% tax payer vote should worth 50% of the total population. I am actually all in for higher taxes and to some extent understand why parties rush freebies (at the end their goal is to keep the power) but as a hardworking urban upper middle class employee I really counted on BJP led modi Govt to change the way our cities look and operate. There is visible change in highway infrastructure but really nothing for big cities. Nothing was done to decongest or improve infrastructure, even if there is something that starts its filled with rampant corruption that never even gets to media. At the moment, I may still vote just because there is no alternative. I would rather stay on the pan, pay higher taxes and get mediocre quality of life than to jump into the fire and get burnt out completely.

Almost all businesspeople evade income tax by playing with the numbers. That is why we have an ironically case where sales of luxury items are booming, but the number of people paying income tax is stagnant at 2%. Government knows all the loopholes but never fixes them out of the fear of losing support from business community.

A very sad state of we middle class people. With the kind of information that you share, most of us are now becoming aware of the actual situation and how much burden we share. All said and done, I don’t think the politicians or the government is bothered of this his 1% contributors, because a large chunk of vote is where they will focus on so that they can remain in power and keep exploiting us. Infact Corporates started silent firing in huge numbers, saying cost reduction as company is running in losses , when it's actually the opposite. Pharma sector is the worst, they make a lot of money and pay peanuts
