Hey mate great shed! , I’ve been building eureka & fair dinkum sheds for 4 years now, my suggestion to everyone who is thinking of building a shed, is to A as you first put it, go the 2.7 height minimum, that extra height is always useful either for higher roller doors or storage and ventilation too. B make sure you get the shed insulated, don’t use that thin paper stuff you see in house roofs , pay the extra amount and get the air bubble, reflective stuff, I recommend Aircell or Sancell, highly worth it as it keeps majority of the heat during summer out, and keeps it warm during winter. The shed immediately just feels cooler on a sunny say if you’ve got this insulation installed. It’s gotta be done before cladding the shed and roof too, (walls and roof insulated for best results but roof is most important if you’re on a budget) While we’re talking insulation and shed temperature, I’d install a whirlybird or two for a shed that size, they help keep the air fresh inside if you’re working with petrol or diesel motors, and regulate the temperature. They can be installed after the shed is done. You could also add afew skylight panels on the roof above where your workbench would be, to add some natural lighting in the shed. Roller doors with a motor as you suggested too, very useful if you’re driving in and out, but if you’re not gonna use it often and mainly use the PA door, then manual operated is fine. Another thing I recommend is verma-seal. It’s these plastic lengths that slide in on the bottom of the wall sheets and the concrete, it basically covers the cladding “rib” holes, and prevents insects and vermin from getting inside the shed from those gaps. If you’re working on cars and would love to have your own hoist, you could go with an American barn style shed too, for that extra height to fit that hoist. If you’re keen on gardening too, you could add a water tank and hook the down pipes from the shed up to it for rainwater. These are what I recommend anyway, they’ve have had many happy reviews from previous clients who decided to build a shed, it’s just a matter of budget really. build to what you can afford guys and I hope I’ve helped someone 😁

Hey Mate. Wow thanks for taking the time to share your experience. Very valuable info right there for anyone building a shed. I'm going to pin this one to the top. Good stuff.... couple of questions... I wish I got insulation on my roof now after working in it. I have put in a wirly bird and that improved it a lot. Would you recommend spray insulation on the roof? What options are there if you want to put insulation on the roof after the shed is built?
@martingoxhaj7442
@martingoxhaj7442 3 жыл бұрын
Shenke Garage no worries, I’m not sure how effective spray insulation is for sheds, but it would probably be the quickest / cheapest way to insulate it since it’s been roofed. however I still recommend the aircell/sancell bubble insulation be installed if you want best results, it also stops condensation, you can still install it but they’ll need to remove the roof, easiest way would be 5 sheets either side at a time, run 3 runs of the insulation, then re fix the 5 sheets back and continue it that way. Hope this helps.

I have just finished a shed on my farm, 15M by 10M, and 4M high. One bay is a dirt floor because I put my D4 bulldozer there,and the rest of it is completely "lockupable". The slab is a total of 94 Sq metres, 125mm thick 40MPa. Slab cost $10,400 and earthworks were about $3K as the shed is on the side of a reasonably steep hill so it took nearly two days with a dozer and excavator.. I agree that when choosing the shed go with the highest you can and get the biggest shed you can". No one in the history of building a shed has ever said "Gee, I wish I had built a shed that wasn't as high or as big as this one. Also get vermin proofing at the time of build, it is a pain to retro fit. When it comes to cost of the shed, a very rough rule is that the final cost will be about double the shed kit cost. The electrical costs were a lot more expensive than I thought it would be but I did have to run about 200M of cable from the main switchboard to the shed. I did have an electrician friend do the work for me, but the electrical hardware alone was close to $5K Also get good roof insulation and a roof vent, whirlybird thing, they do make a difference. Don't uuse spray foam insulation, as someone who has lived through a couple of mice plagues, rodents just chew the crap out of that stuff. Shed kit was $34.5K and erection of the shed cost $11K. By the time you add all the extras, decent rainwater tank, guttering to the tank, plumbing, a few loads of gravel etc there is bugger all change out of $70K all in. Doesn't matter how big your shed is, it is amazing how the thing fills up!

Recently built a shed at my place in brisbane too and one thing that is a must do to get final approval is the down pipes must be connected to the alotment storm water connection or a gravel pit. Gravel pit must be 1m x 1m x 1m cube and cannot be closer then 3m to any boundary or existing building.. this is also includes down pipes connected to a stormwater tank, the overflow of the stormwater tank must be connected to the alotment stormwater or gravel pit. So best to seek a plumbers advice to when planning your shed build. Also if you wish to install a hoist make it known at plannig stage of the build to ensure the slab is thick enough to take the weight of the hoist install, alays helps the sparkie too if the slab bloke has bis digger there ask them to whip up an electrical trench to the house.. hot tip my bloke did it for a 6pk 😉 Also i have a 5m wide (double wide) roller door, it helps to not have the bit of metal post between the roller doors for a wider opening to get the boat in and out. And if yoh cam alays get build the biggest shed you can afford or what the missus will let ya cause once you start putting in benches and shelving... you realise you wish you had a bigger shed! Top video bloke!

Would be starting to add up now that you are decking the shed out Sam. Looking good, especially with that beast in there. Will second Sam’s comment on drive way into the shed. Was one of the regrets I had when I did mine. Height is a huge thing also, I went 3.6 at the eves as plan on a hoist later down the track, lucky enough to be rural and allowed a higher shed. The extra height allows for good over head storage space also to give more usable floor space.

Insulation is a big one in my opinion. Like to work away all year round in my shed and it makes things so much more comfortable. At the very least insulate the roof when its being built as you can always do the walls later yourself. A well insulated shed also makes a slow combustion wood heater a good option for the colder months.

Nice shed Shenke! What's the finish on the floor - it looks painted but not sure you mentioned it? Tips I picked up: - recess /slope slab at doors so rain doesn't come in - ensure a vapour barrier is put below the slab or you'll have rising moisture issues - put conduit bends thru the slab to avoid running flex conduit thru the wall - if you want a lift/hoist, ensure slab is reinforced or poured thicker than standard (as per hoist manufacturer's specs) - insulate roof at minimum to stop condensation dripping - shed first slab second = horrible rust issues at the base of the wall panels in 10yrs time - have a read of the building regs, some companies will let you request stuff that won't pass then charge you additional fees for "resubmitting" paperwork - check that the supplier is using Aussie steel. check the thickness and profile that they're quoting and whether colour is extra - don't forget to subtract wall thickness from each side when working out internal dimensions - make shed as big as possible as budget etc allows. Can always add other things later. - go as high as reasonably possible, wall storage is premium and roller doors take up height (NB: may increase required distance from border)

@Shenke Garage. Mate really love this video. the explanation is pretty brilliant. come to the point. I am planning to build a light industrial shed. size would be 10m x 20m x 4 or 5m high. Did you put piers for the shed or were the pillars just bolted down on the slab? I am definitely going to need piers. I will need two roller doors motorised ones and one PA door. what do you reckon how much width of roller doors are enough? Did they provide you plans and an engineering diagram for the shed? Because I am gonna need it for the Development Application approval (Live in NSW). What are your shed slab's thickness and the concrete's strength (PSI or MPa)? Will plan to insulate the ceiling and walls with Aircell insulation. there are a lot of things I need to ask but I will go bit by bit. I just got quoted $33,000 for a 6m x 11.5m x 2.5m shed and that was for the shed a slab and install. You got the deal of a lifetime on your build. I'm down in Victoria so everything is always more expensive here plus add in rampant inflation at the moment. Great video though.

Things are getting bloody expensive unfortunately. Seems like the price has nearly doubled at this point for a shed.
@TheKnobCalledTone.
@TheKnobCalledTone. 2 жыл бұрын
just did the maths... faaaarrrkk... that's about $450/m2 for shed + slab + labour vs Shenke's $230/m2 odd for shed + slab + labour. Looks like i'll be budgeting about $500/m2 for my shed in SA, assuming I do it sooner rather than later.
@davesparkz
@davesparkz 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheKnobCalledTone. The concrete slab wasn't even the expensive bit. Shed kit alone was $17500. I thought they were ripping me off so got another quote and it was about the same. I think the cost of steel has gone through the roof.

Preferably lay the slab on top of the ground if you've got a bit of fall on your site,avoid digging in, will end up with flooding problems.Def go 2.7 and insulate the roof at least at build.Nothing better than sitting in an insulated shed in front of the Coonara with a beer on a wet Melbourne day🍻

I built a 9x15x2.7m shed with concrete floor, 19, 4ft double fluros 15 double,power points 2x20 amp gpos for my mig, 3 phase power under ground supply for a hoist ,i,am a sparky so my electrical was cheap about $1100 but the total cost was about $14500 back in 2004 and i also regret not going high enough should have gone to 3.3 m high so a hoist could raise higher with a car on it.

You got the shed at the right time. July 2021, here in Cairns, for a 9x6 shed with 3m walls being priced $31000. That doesn't include extra for slight slope to land (150mm), conc pump truck and electrical. Might have to move to Bris. Are you happy with the 6m width? or would you recommend 7m width?
@ShenkeGarage

@@ShenkeGarage I have bit the bullet and ordered the shed....9mx6m with 3m wall height. 2 roller doors and PA door between. Hopefully going up Oct depending on weather here in Cairns. Got a mid rise hoist delivered and in garage now waiting to go to the shed. Also got a unimig viper 185 welder and having fun with that. Will have to build some work benches similar to yours. Hi mate, thanks for the informative video. Curious to see if you think 6 metres wide is deep enough for your car. I’m thinking when I build mine I’m thinking putting a bench on the back wall to where the cars drive into and for making it easier to walk around when the cars are parked inside. Thinking 7metres might help that but just wanted you 2 cents
@ShenkeGarage
@ShenkeGarage 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Mate. 6 Meters is fine once a car is parked in. There is room to walk in front and behind. If you plan on putting in a bench then it will be tight. If you have the room and funds to go 7 meters then I would definitely go 7 for sure. I am looking at extending my shed soon so it makes sense to go as big as you can.

Hey Mate. I would go as high as you possibly can. It may depend also on council restrictions and also the company that make the shed kits. I would say anything over 3m should be ok. Also depends how high the hoist can go.

thanks for the cost break down, im in Logan and we are thinking about chucking up a good sized shed, probably 12x 9 roughly, but have no idea of the costs. the main thing i was worried about was concrete as we have minimal access to our backyard, so knowing the rough pump cost etc means no surprises I've used your cost as a guide and added 5k to it to use as a rough idea of what to expect at minimum, if it comes in cheaper I'll be happy lol

Glad the cost breakdown helps with yours. 12 x 9 is a very decent shed. Good stuff. One thing is make sure you go as high as you can and I would also reccommend insulate the roof at the same time as installing it. A whirly bird works well but can always install that later on.
