Sudhir Shah's comment is right. It is observed that due to loose connection at neutral point somewhere either in your house or main supply source, there will be higher than 10 - 15 volt between Neutral to Earth. This condition of supply line should be taken care of, otherwise higher the voltage between Neutral and Earth can lead to damage to sensitive electronic equipment and shock hazards to the equipment user.

The ideal Voltage between Neutral and Earth should always be " 0 " . It should never be more than 5 volts. But to confirm that, Earth connection is in a proper working condition, the Voltage reading between Phase and Earth should be 5 to 10 volts less than voltage between Phase and neutral. If there is " 0 " voltage between Neutral to Earth as well as between Phase to Earth, then it is understood that, Earth connection is either disconnected or not provided to that point.

yes it is interesting aspect, but seems to be correct. I think one point why the voltage between neutral and earth appears which is due to unbalanced load on three phases from the distribution transformer. This reason has not been highlighted.

One more very important and reason should have been mentioned here which is happening majority time rather than other reasons. Sometime the neutral from the power company creates such problems in neutral level increases due to some fault there, but resolves on its on. During such period you get about 20 to 30 voltas between neutral and Earth. Please comment 🙏

I have made new earthing at home because the old one is showing more than 230volt between nutral to earth at all the points. Now, the neutral to earth is between 16v to 22 volt at all points. No appliances are damaged or malfunction. How to resolve the more voltage between neutral to earth. Wiring done by builder looks poor, and almost all points were loose connections. And seems extended neutral wire from main point. Some. Do suggest the best way to solve the problem. Thanks

In my home, the electric line neutral and earth value is 0 (no reading), but in phase and neutral and phase and earthing value is the same, which is 233. So in my case, does earthing work perfectly? One more thing: my wire is connected in copper pine on the meter box. My ground is not grounding.

In your case, here’s what your readings indicate: Phase to Neutral: 233V Phase to Earth: 233V Neutral to Earth: 0V What This Means: Since the voltage between neutral and earth is 0V, it suggests that your neutral and earth are bonded at some point-possibly at the main panel or meter box. The voltage between phase and neutral and phase and earth is the same (233V), which means that your earth wire is just acting as a direct connection to neutral rather than providing proper grounding. Is Your Earthing Working? No, your earthing is NOT working properly. The earth wire should be connected to a proper earth electrode (copper rod, GI pipe, or plate) buried in the ground. If your earth is working correctly, there should be some small voltage difference (usually a few volts, not zero) between neutral and earth due to ground potential variations. Possible Issues and Solutions: Your earthing is just connected to neutral, not the ground. Check if your earth wire is actually connected to a proper ground rod or plate. If it's only connected to the meter box copper pin, then it's just a neutral link, not a real ground. Your earthing system is not making proper contact with the ground. If you have an earthing rod/pipe but still get 0V between neutral and earth, it may be dry soil, loose connections, or corrosion preventing a good ground connection. Pouring water with salt/charcoal around the earthing rod can improve conductivity. Improper Earthing Wiring: Ensure that the earth wire is separate from the neutral wire and connected directly to the ground electrode. In some meter boxes, neutral and earth are joined, which can cause readings like yours. How to Test Your Earthing: Use a bulb test: Connect a bulb (100W) between phase and earth-it should glow but dimly (not full brightness). If it glows fully, your earthing is not working. Use a multimeter to measure resistance between earth and a good ground reference; it should be less than 5 ohms. Final Recommendation: ✅ Fix the earthing by ensuring the earth wire is properly connected to an actual ground rod/plate. ✅ Recheck the readings after fixing it. ✅ If you are unsure, consult an electrician to verify the earthing system.
