I think the issue with the open money vids is that most people can't relate. Most of them are millionaires. It would be nice to see people that are more "average" I guess. People that are still on their journey :).
@djsone3499

I find them hard to watch for that reason. I wasn't aware of the importance of saving and investing until my mid-30s, so I feel really behind when I listen to people who did everything right from a young age.
@lanceklein2746

I guess I don’t mind them being millionaires, because it’s good to see aspirational stories. But I agree it would be good to see people who are all up and down the spectrum, from people with 5 years experience and extending to people retiring with SS and minimal savings to see how they cope financially and what their story is (divorce, job loss, etc.)

Many of those "millionaires" were just average people. The goal is to show how they became millionaires, and how you can become one! The best examples for people on their way up, are those that made it!

Erin don't ever get discouraged about your channel. You provide excellent analysis of economic issues and are genuinely trying to educate your audience. We appreciate everything you do. Remember most of those other channels you're comparing yourself to have been around a lot longer and are probably more established. You're obviously getting there, so just be patient! As for the "Open Money" series, I must admit I watched a few and kinda lost interest. Maybe if you made one about someone like me I would most probably watch but the others most likely not. Since your primary intent is to educate how about a series about the pros and cons of the different types of investments (i.e. stocks, bonds, mutual funds, REITs, etc)? Many people new to investing may find that helpful. Stick with it Erin! We think you're great!

My 2 cents on the open money: I have seen 3-4 and like the idea, but there are 2 things that drag the interest down IMO: 1) They're too long and often the guest isn't as charismatic on video. But if they're "not interesting", and they're often not, it won't hold attention or demand future views. You are "good on camera", and it makes a big difference. A possible solution is to tighten the video down to 5-10 minutes where the guest has less platitude to talk. Figure out a formula that gives you more control while getting the information across. You do a good job of interviewing them and making them comfortable, but I don't really care about their childhood, first car, or favorite restaurants. 2) Maybe make them topical? Like, debt payoff stories, inheritance stories, budgeting stories, etc. Many of the people are retired or making a lot of money, which doesn't resonate with the broader audience. I get that they might have more to talk about, but if the videos are tighter than that shouldn't matter. At the end the biggest issue is they are talking and you are not. It makes a difference. I'd suggest a format change from the current asking them comfortable, open ended questions to a repeatable/scripted formula. Their information, data, story, etc, but ultimately your show. My 2 cents.
@TBIhope
@TBIhope Жыл бұрын
I like both of your cents! 😂 Making them more topical is a great idea. Like doing 1 retirement video every month, a debt payoff story every other week, and a savings video once a month or something!

I like this advice, and agree that part of the issue with those videos is they aren't streamlined enough; more focused questions with tighter editing would help I think. And like you said, Erin has good camera presence, but the guests don't necessarily, plus there can be issues with A/V quality on their end.

"Open Money" series; I compare myself to those sharing their story each time I watch one of these videos. It makes me feel a little depressed that I don't see myself being as successful as these wonderful people. Try to focus more on what obstacles were overcome and clearly show what they did to successfully overcome them. That way the audience can learn from their experience. This should be a video series of examples and advice on overcoming many of life's financial challenges. P.S. Ask the audience for suggested financial challenges they want to see in future videos.

Erin, I watch most of your content, but not much of the Open Money. A little too long and some of the guests aren’t as strong on video as you. I subscribe to 10 finance related channels and watch most of their content. Your channel, Erin, is one of these! You fill a space that is different from the rest. I really feel you come across more genuine and approachable to a younger audience that needs to hear simplified, but sound advice on finances. I’d be more likely to share your content to a person that is newer to “money” topics and personal finance. Straight forward and digestible information. You are doing a fantastic job. Keep up the good work! You are more than finances/clicks/view times, never forget that.

Erin most of your videos are fabulous for the younger investors, you tell them exactly what goals to go after and how to do it. Just going by the reactions of my three boys 22, 25, and 30 they say they checked it out but I can't see if they subscribe and watch on a regular basis. It's like their girlfriends (and the 30-year-olds wife) need to tell them to watch it and not Dad! I wish I could explain it better but to them, Dad is always the fallback guy but they all want to do it their way. They are all well educated, if a teacher told them to watch and write a paper on your content it would be awesome. Keep up the hard work Erin. Happy New year to you and your husband. I really enjoyed hearing you talk about finances with your Mom on a monthly timetable. My Mom is an 88-year-old accountant and I regularly sit with her and go over investments.

Erin... you are fantastic and genuine and so knowledgeable! Keep up the great work. I think your open money series is worth keeping for sure (of course, I would say that!). I hope those who feel like they can't relate to some people's stories reach out to you and share their story... because really you don't have much control over who it is that's offering to join you. So perhaps at the end of your episode, ask for it. Encourage those who feel like maybe they aren't savings heros or personal finance machines to join you and talk about their experiences! You're the real deal, and I see only good things to come!

Have you considered creating a Patreon account and adding specialized content or access there? How about writing a book or blog to couple with your Patreon and YT content? Imo, not many people want to sit through an hour of video. Instead, release it as a podcast and then on KZbin release shorts or snippets of the best part of the open money series. Keep going with open money and do not stop. It is what keeps your channel unique and will pay off on the long run. The general finance stuff has been beaten to death across many channels. All the best for a great ‘23. Aim for 500k, not 100k ✌🏻

You have a wrinkle with the Open Money series that others don't have. But much like a hit series that has a rocky beginning, you have to stick with it and tweak it until it works. I agree with others that suggest making them more succinct, and maybe summarizing the points/lessons that viewers will find useful. It's going to be hard, cause you're a known quantity and flavour to us, but each new participant in Open Money is not, and may not be a great communicator or simply not that interesting/relatable to some viewers. But shorten them, tighten them, jazz them up, and I'll bet the Open Money series can be a winner. YOU are not only educating so many, but also INSPIRING us to continue with our own efforts. So thanks for doing a great job, and keep it up!

Open Money is a great addition. It is interesting to see different people and of different stages in life. It would also be useful for individuals in high school to have a road map for their future. It also helps with discussion of retirement. By uniquely addressing all of the in between stages also; as marriage vs divorce 😢; if could paint the colors of life and how finances were impacted. Love what you do and as long as you love it the series I would keep it.

I usually don't comment on videos or any social media but feel this video warrants it. First off, I really do like your channel and content. I like it because it is relevant, not overbearing and conveys a lot of common sense in personal finance. Congratulations on your success and increasing your subscriber count. I genuinely look forward to seeing your video topics every week. Your videos validate approaches that my wife and I have followed for years and are now allowing us to enjoy retirement. We were both laid off as part of Corporate restructuring but had anticipated it. We had been planning our work exit strategy for over 10 years so when it was forced upon us, we were ready. As for your Open Talk series of videos, honestly I know very little about the content because for me, it is long form content and not something I am inclined to watch. Your twice weekly videos are usually 10 - 15 minutes and to the point. They are to the point, relevant and don't consume a lot of my time to absorb the content. Your Open Talk videos on the other hand appear to me to be more story telling and thus longer, which usually pre-empts my engagement unless I am really, really, really interested in the topic. Continued success and I look forward to the next video!!! Have a successful 2023 and beyond.

Excellent point about setting goals, if you don't set them you've got nothing to strive for and be ambitious for! Also, thank you for doing this peek behind the curtain with the "smaller" (not-yet ginormous) size of your channel (currently, here's hoping it keeps growing!). And the note about performance differences between content types. That's info that's not out there a ton and super useful to people at the beginning of their journeys. Finally, I'll look into some of those other videos you mentioned, KZbin must be broken or something because I haven't been seeing them pop up for me...

Love the transparency you have in this and all your videos. Money shouldn’t be a taboo subject. Regarding the open money videos, people are A LOT more unwilling to click a video that’s longer than 20 minutes. People are much more likely to click a video 10 minutes or less.

I, of course, love the open money series and watch them all. Something that you have little control over is that you personally have camera experience and stage presence more so than your guests. I don’t think you can do what you want to do in 15 minutes but 30 minutes might be a limit. I know you want people to tell their stories in their own words. If you know more of their story beforehand then you can structure the flow of the conversation to make points that you think are important to your audience. This was a very interesting video. Thanks for all you do for us.

Congratulations on a successful 2022! Found your channel later in the year, and has quickly become one of my favorites. It's interesting to see how you content creators get paid. Definitely stray from comparing yourself to others; you are a genuine, sweet presenter and your own style is what makes you unique! As far as the "Open Money," I do feel it is a tad long. Also for the "Open money" Series, Don't quit, it is a very interesting concept, but has a lot of work to be done. It's way too long, and you could easily edit it to be closer to 10 minutes. I would advise to learn more about audio editing too, so that the "thinking" pauses are gone and the audience gets a coherent sentence right away. And the Thumbnail and title could also use some creativity. If you keep just your face instead of adding the interviewees it would make it less messy, and also try to have maximum 35 characters in the title that captures why the audience should click it, most people won't read a full title so it needs to be captivating. Even this video I clicked because I was intrigued by you, but the title could have been "KZbin Paid me THIS much In 2022", and it would be even more clickable. The description could contain the extra information you want to convey. It is hard to sum everything up in a comment, but if you keep going and improve every video you might get huge!

I never lose focus watching your videos. Stay the course. It’s only a matter of time until you get discovered by a larger audience. Stick with it and I have no doubt you will shatter your 100k goal faster than you think. As to the open money segment, I agree with others that they need to be shortened. Just an observation on the open money series - the shortest video appears to be in the 25 min range. As an experiment, you could try splicing them down into multiple shorter videos per guest if the topics and discussions permit. Releasing three 8-10 minute segments with a guest per week could make the content more digestible for us viewers, and increase your overall views. No matter what you choose with that particular series, please keep doing what you do. There are plenty of us who enjoy your content, and I'm sure many more who will find the channel as time goes on!

I really like the Open Money series, but understand the other commenters who have said that it’s a lot to accept watching that length of video. I don’t care if I can’t relate currently with the finances of the interviewed, because they are learning lessons and inspiring. I've been posting videos since 2009 and have managed 1.1 million views. I was monetized for a few years until they set minimum limits of 1000 subs and 4000 watch hours. I ended up making about $134 if I remember correctly...RPM was about $0.25. KZbin has done a great job at incentivising people to make great content with these limits since it only pays the better channels and also prioritizes their algorithm to choose better videos from these channels. I've had several of my videos go viral because I've done some crazy things, but many were before monetization was a thing and when most videos had no editing. I hold out hope I will be paid in the future, but I don't try very hard to get it since it is such a lofty goal.

Congratulations on what you achieved in 2022! If I had to guess, I'd say subscribers and all the other metrics are kind of like making your first million. The first 100,000 is a [female dog], but you have to get it. Once you get there, you have the benefit of compounding to get you moving forward. You are among my favorite PF youtubers, and I absolutely loved the Net Worth videos from last year and look forward to this year's updates! Since you asked, I'm not crazy about the Open Money videos. If there's a good title, I'll check it out; but by and large, I'm here to listen to you and what you have to say, not this week's guest. Usually, they aren't able to teach me as much as I would like because their experience is unique to them and isn't something that can be replicated. I hope that 2 videos a week will not wear you down to where you don't feel like a success. If it does, go back to one video a week if that's what it takes to put out a good video. With regards to your 'Open Money' videos, I don't always have the time to sit and watch for 30 - 45 minutes to someone else who's not you talk about how well they did their retirement plan. Maybe have more behind the scenes preparation and a firm list of bullet points you want to hit on at each interview that can be repeated for each video. Make it feel more like your other content with the added unique individual twist (finance is personal). That's my 2 cents. Happy New Year!

I like your channel, you've taught me so much. I would say I wish I found it when I was younger, but I've got a decade on you so there's that. I've recommended you to my niece and nephew who are perfect ages to start (17-20). Open money I like but don't watch as much, it depends on how I resonate with your guest. What I find interesting is that no one ever converts to all bonds the way my friend with a masters in finance says you're supposed to. I love seeing that there are options. Sometimes they're too long for me to listen to in 1 shot because I usually have you on when I do dishes or something similar. I don't know how the starting and stopping a video affects your stats. I appreciate you and I've watched some other channels that have more subscribers and stopped. One in particular that I won't name tells people it isn't there fault if they're not successful, society is rigged against them. Some people like being told they have no responsibility and the world is against them. I know this is a long comment, but my 8 year old son has also asked me if we can do (save) what you do.

Erin First I would like you to know how much I enjoy and appreciate your Utube posts. Secondly I would like to prompt you NOT to be disappointed over last year's number of social media followers. (I'll take quality over quantity any day) My interpretation of last year's numbers is that YOUR followers may be somewhat more sophisticated in regards to personal finance and wealth accumulation. I mean no disrespect to those not interested in finance but they represent a very different demographic than those of us that follow and appreciate your posts. People who are able to save 5,10 or even 20 percent of their income are very few and far between. Non-followers may tend to embrace instant gratification and ignore long term financial growth and security. Your insights promote and present a positive roadmap toward patience and financial security. Please continue to do all that you've done so far and do so with the same sense of gratitude you expressed in this Utube presentation. I'm convinced you get it. Far too many people are missing the opportunities you describe.

Erin, Great channel and congratulations! You have done very very well this first year. I have never clicked on one of you open money videos. I didn't even really know what they were. For some reason the thumbnail and name did not catch my interest. It sounds like a great idea and I will probably go watch some of them now that I know what they are. Maybe a name like "Success story" or "How they did it". Something that gives a better idea of what the video is about. More ideas..."How she/he built it", "Documentary of actual success". Hope this helps. I've always wanted to start a KZbin channel but have done more dreaming than doing.

I like the open money videos but would like a wider range of people willing to talk. I'd happily do an interview with you but I'm too shy to show my face. Disabled self employed and just reached my FIRE number but don't know how to achieve work life balance and my fire number is awkward thanks to the inflation rate at the moment. I'm UK based 👍 I'd like to hear more from people who have lower goals 🤭 My favourite video was the "enough is never enough" and you spoke about the millionaire who took a risk and did some insider trading to make a few million but got caught. You gave an analogy of having candy bars. How grateful for one. Achieve so many they then become a problem because you have to store all the candy bars and so on. It was to do with the psychology of greed and I really liked the psychological explanation of it 🙂

I would say the open money videos are substantially longer than your normal videos. I would do two video with them; a shorter summary version with stats and quick action plan of how they go there, then also do a longer version. I don't mind the Open Money version and actually like to see how others are doing, but to spend that much time watching a video it would need to be rich with content for me. Like some comments below, I also recommend that you try to find individuals that are living and making it on numbers closer to the American average or at least under $600K or so. There are so many KZbinrs and profressional investment channels covering the $1MM to $5MM range; it might be a good niche for others to see how you could live/retire on less and still be okay.

Congratulations for making this into something that helps you. Please keep the open money series, they are enjoyable videos to see how others handle things. Length may be a reason why they don't get a lot of views, as they are about 4x the time commitment of your other videos. Thanks for being a great resource and good luck with future growth.

Forgot to mention the reason I believe that, for me, the open Money videos seem to be too long is because the pacing is so drastically different from your solo videos. I don't know anything about video production so I'm not sure you should listen to me.😁

Always love your content and being able to learn new or reinforce old concepts. To be honest the Open Money videos are not for me and never will be. Even if you changed from retired people to in progress or just starting people, the KZbin market is saturated in my opinion on that content. That is just my opinion and I prefer just hearing the philosophies and facts on your regular content. I think others would want to follow someone's whole journey vs. Just seeing what they've done so far. If it were me i would invest the time in creating new concepts and doing more research.. Congratulations on becoming so successful on KZbin. I remember when your channel was tiny. Keep up the great work and I hope 2023 triples your results of 2022.

Hi Erin, Open money series Should come with a short warning, something like Subscribers like you are willing to share their experience, none of them are professional actors, so be patient and understanding. This is their story, their testimony. Everybody has a different experience, with personal finance. Please note that the open money series videos are longer (30 minutes) than the shorter (12 minutes) regular series. Regular series, Loving them, you are not Suze Orman, and guess what, this is why I enjoy watching twice a week your videos. Keep it up and going, you are doing a Public Service!

Erin, congrats on your channel , so thankful you are here. You provide great information. I very much look forward to your videos. In regard to Open Money, I like them, but they are secondary, but awesome to your primary video pushes, so if time constrained would certainly trim these. So... Kind of cool you just barely miss your goals; this is way cool. You set good high objectives which while not meeting you come close. Kudos to you. Again thanks for what you do, I certainly appreciate. You are great at what you do, so thank you!

Erin, I'm not going to lie. I'm not a particular fan of the "open Money" series. I have watched a couple of them, but did not find them as entertaining and applicable to my situation. I do very much enjoy the rest of your content though.

1. I watch all of your videos except Open Money. The two main reasons I watch your channel are (in order) entertainment and education. The Open Money videos really just aren't entertaining to me, and if there's anything to be learned from them, it's buried and not worth the time to watch. I love the idea, and I myself wrote a personal finance blog article about the value of making it normal to talk about personal finances. So I definitely agree with the sentiment, it just doesn't suit my KZbin goals. 2. You can be successful at something without being "good" at it. It depends on what your goals are. When I started my KZbin channel for wood carving, my only goal was to fill a gap in video content that I saw. Now I've got lots of videos, and I've enjoyed the process, so I'm successful, even though my videos probably don't technically qualify as "good." I've got nearly 600 subscribers, which I think is awesome even though it's obviously pathetic as far as the "KZbinr" culture. I also looked up some statistics and found that even I'm well above average in the number of views, videos, and subscribers compared to all individual-person channels out there. 3. Related to (2), it sounds like you're getting distracted from your goals. If your goal was $30,000 this year, then you came close enough (in my book) to count yourself successful. There's nothing magical about that exact dollar amount, so being so close is a win. Then, when you see other shiny metrics, they cause you to think differently, comparing yourself to others and even a potential self. If you want to prioritize those goals, then do so and work for them, but stay focused on whatever goals YOU decide, not KZbin or other sources. It also depends on who you compare yourself to. I can assure you there are way more people who look up to your KZbin success than down.

Love this channel and I am excited to see it grow! Really appreciate your hard work and consistency! As for the Open Money segments, if you enjoy producing them than keep doing it. Perhaps doing "highlights" edits in separate videos (if the goal is to get more views, and you are up for the extra work)?

I love the Open Money videos! I have a fair bit of personal finance experience/knowledge so I really like seeing what others have done, not just averages or advice that is meant to work for a broad general audience. I had actually noticed they have not performed very well and was disappointed for you and afraid you would need to cut them. They are very unique to your channel; I regularly watch several other finance related channels and that particular approach is interesting to me and not something available anywhere else.

Although I haven't done the math your normal videos or between 10 and 15 minutes long and the open Money videos seem to be 45 minutes or more. Wishing you even more success this year! Your content is immensely helpful. I know you work really hard. This video in particular is HUGE! I was searching for insights on YT revenue forever. I think you’re an inspiration. I actually love your attitude, personality, honesty, the way you talk. As for the Open Money series, I think they just need a lot of editing. Just too long chitchatting about some boring old guy’s personal habits. I skip all that. Not helpful. I only view long enough to see their “trick” - developer dude built his collection over decades, the other guy cashed out his home, military vet relies on military benefits, etc. Maybe better to chop ‘em up and splice in some spoiler alerts?

I think the problem, for me, is that the open money videos are very similar stories. I would love to see people who have done or are on their journey but in different ways. Maybe diffent real estate like str, ltr, section 8. Stories about people starting a side gig or small business that is helping them or that really took off and changed their life. Love your content so don't stop.
