We've spent centuries and sometimes millennia selectively breeding dogs for the express purpose of what these dogs do. They are bred to have the energy, the mentality, and the physical characteristics to be able to handle this job without all of the extra stuff that a human would need. People don't understand that not every dog breed is meant to just sit in your living room and do nothing.

Tis true. I fostered a Pyrenees pup who much preferred to be outside even when the rest of us were indoors. The weather that makes us worry about the less thickly-furred dogs left outside is the same weather that a Pyrenees finds refreshing! I have a Pyr/Golden mix who just glories in sitting on top of a wood chip pile for hours in a blizzard. My attempts to coax her indoors mostly fail.

Couldn't agree more with this. Dogs were selectively bred to do different jobs, and for this breed, they are meant to be out protecting the farm and whatever livestock are there for them to protect

Certain dog breeds with heavy coats are not always comfortable inside a heated home (Husky, Malamute, Samoyed, Great Pyrenees, etc.). They are happier outside with adequate shelter to get out of the snow and the wet. Glad u showed ur dogs' routine. They look very happy to me.

My Dads hunting dogs always lived outside. They had a insulated house and with both dogs in the house it was toasty warm no matter how cold it got. And we lived in Minnesota where it got to -20 F and even as cold as -30. I only remember Dad bringing the dogs in the basement once when it got to -35. The dogs were miserable and wanted out! Our dogs lived long, healthy lives.

Anyone who watches your videos consistently and thoroughly will know that your LGDs thrive and enjoy being outside with their animals. In fact, they prefer it. Even though Abby did well indoors during her injury recovery, she really wanted to be outside with Toby and the flock/herd. Nice, calming video.

I'm a dog trainer and after all the years of studying and working with clients and his dogs i've come to the conclusion that certain dogs breeds are definetly not pets and i advocate for that everytime i can. People call thenselvs "dog lovers" but dont know anything about dogs and what they really are, and often preach about this and that being "dog abuse" like let then sleep outside or do sports like bike or canicross. So i say to these folks that the real dog abuse for me is keep working breeds like border collies, cattle dogs, LSGD, sheperds, gun dogs and etc in a small apartment or yards, doing nothing of theirs life and going crazy, beeing treated like babies or tedy bears. For me being a "dog lover" is to love the real dog, the ones that live theirs lifes the way they were made to live.

And bored dogs easily become problem dogs. Don't blame the bored dog for acting like they were bred. It is also good he has two dogs. 1. They work together. 2. When the older dog gets too old, the younger dog will take over and the old one can be relaxed. He should get a third dog in time.

Your comment is oblivious to the fact that many of these breeds of dogs would be dead or euthanized without people taking them in and providing them a good home - even if they aren’t herding. I have a Great Pyrenees and a GSD that were both rescued. They are happy, healthy, mentally stimulated, and are not dead. They absolutely love their lives despite the sweeping generalization you felt the need to chime in with. I am not offended by your comment because anyone is a dog trainer these days and also opinions are like assholes, but it truly is disparaging to many true dog lovers who take meticulous care of their dogs even if they happen to be working dogs. I don’t know why “dog trainers” feel the need to be so fucking negative all the time. Maybe you should take a cue from the creatures you supposedly train and learn how to love life and everything around a bit more.

I'm a "city slicker" and a dog lover, but even I understand that certain dogs are bred for certain purposes and do certain jobs. To me, your dogs are well taken care of. They haven't been left outside chained up with no food, shelter, and no one looking after them. They have 2 shelters, get fed at least twice a day from the looks of it, get love/pet/care from their owner, and can roam over multiple acres of land most of the time, not to mention they get vet care whenever they need it. Any owner in any environment, city or otherwise that abuses or doesn't look after their animals is worse than pond scum and deserves to be in a special circle in hell. But you aren't one of those. Don't let these people get to you Morgan, they're short-sighted and don't understand how well you take care of Abby and Toby.

@@matthewhuszarik4173double coated breeds, to start with, find the temperatures we like in our home very uncomfortable. I tried bringing my LGD inside, from time to time, and she just stood at the door asking to go back out. I can't count the number of horse owners who put their horses in stalls thinking it's "better care" without paying the slightest attention to the animals' reactions. Fifteen years working with horses and I did pay attention. Horses don't care what the weather is, and neither do these breeds - they are uncomfortable inside. Cruelty is being locked in when these 5000+ year old breeds have Never lived inside. Our LGD got fed twice, every day. She had constant, fresh water. She had access to shelter, but preferred to just hang out under our house. She was happiest when it was coldest. LGD Love the outdoors, their family, and the farm animals. At least 96% of their job is peeing - as soon as we had our LGD we stopped seeing new coyote tracks. They can tell by LGD' excrement that they are huge and eat meat. All species have territory in the wild. These are loving, mellow breeds that maintain their ancestors' wild love of the outdoors. LGD are the gentlest method of protecting livestock and even pets, for that matter. My Anatolian also protected my cats and smaller dog. There are a lot of people losing cats and dogs to coyotes

@@matthewhuszarik4173Stop anthropomorphizing animals. Dogs have lived outside for millennia. They are incredible at adapting to their environment and different breeds will have certain characteristics that allows them to comfortably live in their given environment. Toby and Abby are exceptionally well taken care of. They have beautifully maintained coats which keep them nice and toasty during the winter. Both also have a lovely cabin full of straw to cozy up during extra cold nights. They would also be allowed to come inside, if they really wanted. But they actually *want* to spend their time outside doing their job. If you get a working dog breed they will automatically show the characteristics that made them so suitable for the work in the first place, and will get deeply depressed if not allowed to work or without appropriately adapted activities. A husky will always be very active, and will want to go on very long walks. A collie will automatically look for something to herd and protect. Beagles will love to do scent tracing and will have a very active prey drive. Any type of guardian lifestock breed will automatically be territorial. It's just part of their genetics, and their character will show that. If not allowed to follow those instincts, they can become incredibly destructive in a home and can develop behavioral issues.

That way your husband will be comforted knowing the dog can come inside and the dog can be outside whenever he wishes to be. But the rule is provide your animals when outside with area out of the wind and with plenty of water.

I think they're not worth being concerned over Morgan. I'm quite sure that if there had been any issues over the last few years, then the vets would have pointed them out, and you would have fixed them long ago. Toby-dog seemed to be eating around his egg. "They say" that the white part of the egg -- the albumin -- is twice as digestible if it's cooked. Even for dogs. The American Kennel Club says raw egg white could lead to a biotin deficiency. Cooking kills the enzyme in the egg white that prevents biotin absorption. Thought it was worth mentioning, since you frequently give your dogs eggs -- and you obviously love your dogs, as do we❣

And my pot belly pigs only NEED heat when they have litters. But again, I provide a lamp because comfort and survival are not the same thing. We have similar weather I find very often. NS Canada

My grandma calls me once a week to remind me to keep my dog inside the house because I live in a mountain region and it gets pretty cold here. My dog is a husky 😂 A lot of people are having this feeling because they are trying to empathize with the dog using their own sensibility as a reference point, which is, actually, insane 😅Arctic and high altitude dogs have special double coats, that completely prevents frost on their hair and provide perfect insulation for temperatures that go up to -50 Celsius. Arctic dogs specifically have even a different shape of mouth, which also prevents any drooling, because drooling causes frost to occur on their lips, which would be detrimental in those temperatures. We should be aware that these are different animals then us. They don't just live in the cold, they were born in it, molded by it 🥶😁

I absolutely love these types of videos so I’m truly not complaining but my goodness I can’t believe you have to explain this to people. They are dogs which are breed for this exact type of lifestyle and you provide them with all the need and then some. They look happy, healthy and loved to me🤷🏽‍♂️

I grew up in a country where dogs have jobs to do, usually to guard properties. We love our dogs but like any member of the household, they have chores to do. Your dogs looks amazing and healthy.

I liked the video you posted last year about Toby in “flouf mode” and “beast mode”. Working dogs like having a job to do and love being outside. I think if they had their way, they would love for their humans to live outside with them! Hahaha

We rescued a Great Pyrenees, also a Livestock Guardian Dog breed, and eventually found him an excellent working home. During the year we had him, he would settle out in the yard overnight and in the morning would have droplets of ice frozen to the tips of his fur. He had his own indoor space, but would choose to sleep in the elements unless it was storming. These are hardy working breeds who have minds of their own.

Thxs for this vlog…I luv to see how the dogs work. I used to have a Great Pyrenees, but he got into a fight with a cougar & lost. Was gone for 2 days and came back home with his chest ripped open. So sad🥲. So I really luv to see how ur dogs r so happy to protect ur farm👍

Love your music. It reminds me of the old Saturday morning cartoons that introduced so many of us “boomers” to classical music. Gold Shaw Farms continues to be my favorite KZbin channel.

I'm VEGAN and I support Gold Shaw Farms. Morgan is farming the way we *should* be farming. Allowing dogs to protect his farm is what they were bred to do. Raising a small amount of animals for meat and eggs is what farming was meant for. Let this guy run his farm.

People don't understand that a working LGD WANTS to be outside at night. That is when danger is highest. They also may not understand that a Maremma, like a Great Pyrenees, is double coated. They can lay covered in the snow and be very warm at the skin.
