SMOE, my man, I owe you a thank you. So thank you! My wife and Chillrinz and I just bought a new house. I, as the poppa, only had 3 things I needed. One- a good roof Two- recently updated heat/air &3- space out back for a garden graff wall. That's something you and I spoke on a while back and it changed my life. I can't wait to paint legally and pass my skills down to my kids. They're already a part of the culture/arts. Anyway, you inspired me and it literally effected my house hunting and final sale. I appreciate you, a lot SN. You're inspirational on many levels. Big ups my G

Deleting the first lines - an Oldschool habit - a professional habit - I think that you have a great and structured painting method.
@SReject4 жыл бұрын
About the canvas acting weird: I know you put a blue base coat down but did you use any sort of primer, like gesso before hand? The reason I ask is that without a canvas-specific primer, what happens is the canvas fibers absorb the paint immediately, causing the fibers to swell with the liquid within the paint. Then as the liquid dries off and the fibers contract micro-cracks in the paint occur which causes the paint to dull and appear spotty. And just watched to the very end; if you plan to do more canvas paintings, when you send them off, roll them so paint side is out. Rolling with paint-side inward puts the paint under compression and can cause it to flake/chip. Where as with paint-side out, the paint is under tension, of which most spray paints have a bit of elasticity.
@DjAlanBarratt4 жыл бұрын
great reply, maybe also mix the base coat with pva glue to help seal the canvas? also did you lacquer the paint after?
@kevincooper56563 жыл бұрын
@@DjAlanBarratt It was a really good reply @SReject - While he was painting the blue background on the canvas all I kept thinking was, " I wonder why he's not putting any gesso down, first?" And when he started having his problem w/the color(s) I kept thinking, " Yeah, he should have put gesso down, first." (lol) But we live and learn, right? Big up to you and @SReject for offering your advice to Smoe Nova and for confirming my feelings on it too. We're all better for it.

Paint the top of that wall and all exposed edges .. your best option for coating is to prime it with an oil-based primer(3 coats on the cut ends) then apply a high quality 100% acrylic latex paint. You should coat both sides not just exterior. OSB ... while it is inexpensive, it does not last.

a tip for that wall (if havent allready done that) is to build a little roof on the top or prime it really well so that rain cant be sucked up, have seen this on alot of legal walls that the woord sucks up rain and after a year or two, the paint layers start to have boubles on them since the water has nowhere else to go. after tre or four years paint will start to come of, and that i never fun if u like a flat/clean wall.

Hi Smoe, I've been following you for a few years now and I'm a big fan ! Always really impressed by your work ! Really powerful and encouraging for a early graffiti artist like me. Anyways, I recently moved into a new home and as i now have a garden. So I decided to built my own graffiti wall based on the same idea as yours. As I don't have the same budget and skills as the one you showed I this video, mine might be a bit cheaper. For instance, my OSB boards are directly in contact with the ground and i'm scared it might get moist and eventualy rot with time and humidity from dirt. Thus, my question is : do you have any tips for me in order to prevent such a degradation of my wall ? I really thank you for your advice and the inspiration you've been to me since I discovered graffiti ! Keep up the good work and the spirit you put in your art ! From belgium with love !

That’s right, do you smoe! As long as you’re happy with your work, rules be damned! I think I can help with the cause of the “dirty” look, if you’re using raw (unprimed)duck cloth canvas (that’s what it’s called in the states) , you need to prime it with white,at least a couple of coats, then the paint should pop, I make my own canvases for painting using that canvas. Hope this helps smoe! P.s. is just me or did the guy driving the truck kinda look like Doke?
@SMOENOVA4 жыл бұрын
😂😂😂 it is just you... i didnt look like doke at all... thx. yeah, i think it could have used a second coat, thx💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻

the problem you have with the canvas is in the prep. canvas is very loose threads, and very absorbent. it's good raw for specific concepts, but pretty much every professional artist that uses canvas will prime it first. most common is an acrylic medium called Gesso. acrylic is plastic so you can paint on it with the same hold as a brick wall or wood boards....makes everything more vibrant and takes the color better. also, when stretching canvas, either on a frame, or against a wall to work on, to avoid wrinkles: start in the middle of one side, doesn't matter which, place in 2-3 pins (tacks, staples, ext) then go to the opposite side, and do the mirror. whatever side you work on do a handful working from middle towards the corners, and then do the opposite side. keeps everything taught and wrinkle free...and not too much stress in 1 place (which could tear the canvas)

@@SMOENOVA forgive my indulgences. an ex of mine talked me into being a painting major after getting into art school...where i learned the technical stuff most people don't think about.

Great life lesson that's applicable in all aspects of life. Work through the problem. Frustration, fear of failure etc. All those negative thoughts can cripple you or cause failure/giving up. But, keep it moving, think the moves out, and you'll prevail. Or at least grow as a person, or in this case, as an artist. Word

SMOE you have to prime your canvas next time thats why you were struggling at the beginning. I’m sure it got easier as it went but you should try to gesso the canvas first before painting it. It will give the paint more tooth and you won’t get so much of that canvas soaking up the paint.
@davebaer56994 жыл бұрын
SMOE! You have to prime the canvas first by painting it using gesso. Otherwise it soaks up the first layers of paint, like you so frustratingly discovered. ;)

hahahah i like to go through this phases of frustration in a weird way... it is always there. every time i paint.
