My Hero Academia was not Kohei Horikoshi’s first attempt at a shonen manga. Before Deku, there was Astro from his second series, Barrage. But why did Barrage fail and how did it end up laying the groundwork for My Hero Academia? Join Ed as he dissects Barrage and learns a lesson about the value of failure.

Hi y'all, we politely request that you don't post manga spoilers in the comments please! Some are only familiar with the show and haven't caught up with the material in the manga, so let's keep it spoiler-free for everyone's sake! c:

I like how MHA is Horikoshi's plus ultra version of Barrage. Perhaps that is why MHA is so good at depicting the concept of going beyond your limit and doing what you sincerely love or believe in.

Awesome video! I love that even though Barrage didn't workout for Horikoshi, he didn't give up and ended up making one of the most popular shonen series, and imo one of the best. Seems Izuku's optimism despite his circumstances is what Horkoshi was trying to embody while writing MHA, pretty cool stuff.

I remember I tried reading Barrage years ago after getting into MHA and really loving the series and wanted to check out Horikoshi's other works, thought Barrage had a fun premise when I read the summary. But the first chapter felt awkward and I barely remember the rest of what I read, it just really didn't hold my attention or grab me in any way. The lack of setup for Astro's family that was supposedly so important to him was definitely a big issue for me, but seeing the rest of the first chapter's issues brought up was very interesting! Oh and love the editing on this video!

I read Barrage and Oumagadoki no zoo because I fell in love in MHA and wanted to see more of Hori's writing. I absolutely loved Oumagadoki and actually thinking was kinda unfairly cancelled but I agree exactly with your criticisms of Barrage. Personally I think Hori took elements from all his previous works, Oumagadoki, Barrage and his one shots (My Hero and Tenko) and refined them to make My Hero Academia.

Oh! Is this where black whip come from. I love how hirokoshi takes piece from his other mangas and put them in my hero. It makes me so happy seeing the Crazy Zoo characters in my hero.

Loved this vid! Took some notes too (I'm trying to start writing my own stories and channels like yours and The Closer Look, etc. are a massive help)! It's super inspiring to see how far Horikoshi has come, to create such a widely beloved and very interesting, thoughtful and heartwarming series. I also find myself struggling to put into words the reason WHY I like something, beyond aesthetics (which I'll admit are quite important to me as an artist and animator), so it's always great having someone else to do it for me lol. You can really see with this comparison the strides Horikoshi has made in both worldbuilding and characterisation. Honestly, it's helped put my own artistic/writing journey into perspective and given me hope that even though I may not get it right the first time, there's always a second and third and however many else I need if I just keep learning and reflecting, which, as a person, I always feel like I am doing and it's honestly one of my favourite pastimes! Keep up the great work (can you tell I'm bingeing a bunch of ur eps at once lol)

This was an excellent video comparing both series. I was surprised you didn’t mention the ending of Barrage (which drives me nuts) but seeing someone actually analyze the first chapter and compare it to MHA was refreshing. MHA is the superior series but I can’t help but feel Barrage got the short end of the stick. It never really got to use its potential, whether it be due to the writing fumbles on the author’s end, editor stuff, or readers. Tbh I’m convinced its cancelation (and that of oumagadoki zoo which you should read if you haven’t ) impacted how MHA’s been written, especially early on. I actually didn’t know that MHA was the result of Horikoshi’s depression after Barrage! Looking at all the references to his older works, it makes a lot more sense that Barrage gets so few references compared to stuff like Oumagadoki Zoo & Tenko. It also makes the plot lines in mha that are focused on family resonate a bit more; we’re getting to know that family. Like I’ve read Barrage three times and I can tell you more about Midoriya’s mom than Astro and his family. I also find it interesting that Barrage was more about upholding the status quo while MHA is more about unraveling the societal status quo and making it better. I hope to see more MHA videos from you, and I’ll try and watch the rest of your content!

I think the main character of barrage looks a lot like Kirishima. Kind of similar too that he has a one-word trademark of "family", like "manly".

Hey I love your videos!!! Can you make an analysis of the manga Aragane No Ko please? It's a shonen like manga, and the production of it was fasted up to the point where it started losing structure and the writing was done poorly It makes me sad because it's a great story with great characters but didn't go right in the end TT
