I have noticed in myself an urge to shop every time I don’t like my appearance and a belief that new, better clothes will bring the confidence I’m looking for and will make me feel beautiful. Clothes can have that effect, but I’ll never be satisfied until I work on being satisfied with my appearance first. So I’m trying a low buy until my birthday in May and I’ll pursue counseling and fitness in the meantime!

I will definitely keep no buy year in 2020. I have splurged over 3700 euros to one single online store this year. If I have spend that much only to one online store, how much I've spent all together this year, if I count all my online purchases... I really do need some shopping detox! I have used shopping as an escape from stress and encountering difficult situations. I need to face my fears and take responsibility, like finish my degree and after that try to make progress on my career. Your vlog has confirmed my decision to keep no buy year, so a big thanks to you Christina! 💖 I really do hope that you continue making videos, especially about outfits and possibly about capsule wardrobe. I wish you all the best! 💖 Best Regards, Sanna from Finland 🇫🇮

I don’t think I have a shopping problem because I save money, have no consumer debt, and always find incredible bargains. However, I realize that I constantly find excuses to buy something. If I said no clothes, I’d move on to kitchen stuff. I just bought a portable generator and a solar penal. My area never has power outage and I’ve not done a camping trip in 6 years. YT brought your low buy video to my front page. I listened to your story and realized that I do have a shopping problem, regardless if it affects my finance or not. I am going to stick to no shopping in 2020. I have enough shoes, outfits, craft/art supplies, and skincare to last me 5 years honestly. The high I get from finding and buying incredible bargains is false and never lasts. The cycle is not going to end unless I do something about it.

Jen 33 I am literally the EXACT same way. It is so scary how I will convince myself I need this or that. I have no debt and live comfortably, but instead of saving TONS of money, I only save a little of it and find reasons to spend the rest. How are you doing on your No buy?

I completely relate.. I'm save invest and don't have consumer debt. Yet I feel like I never have what I want and constantly find an excuse to buy something. I can relate 100%. I actually swore off buying clothes for 3 years and felt really good about it, but then I went to get new jeans and ended up picking up a whole bunch of other clothes (that were nice, and that I did end up wearing a lot, but honestly didn't need). And that started this whole spiral of looking for more things to buy. The power of spending "therapy" is insane! I am rooting for you and for me too - here's to more intentional buys and more savings 🙏🏽

I just discovered your channel. I'm french, 44 years old, and started a more minimalist way of living (moving, ending a long and toxic relationship, working on re-finding my own self ...) I used to be a makeup addict and buy everything i would find beautiful. I ended owning more than i could ever put on my face and it made me feel very guilty and anxious. So i first stopped buying makeup. And then i felt the need to own only what i really loved and used, for personal and environmental reasons. I feel better this way. I feel true to myself and love it although it's not all a bed of roses. I will still buy only what i really need, mostly second hand. Thank you for your honesty around the impulse of buying 🙏

I agree with you, especially on the makeup and skin care products. I’m sure many women are in this situation. The industry is making us believe we “need” a lot of products to be beautiful. But many can be replaced with more natural or homemade alternatives.

@@yoritrance to me it was more like "it's so beautiful, so unique, i have to have it !" Although it doesn't really fit me, or i don't need it, or i already have something similar. @@yoritrance Absolutely - many of these habits are fostered and encouraged by companies that stand to profit immensely from it. I really applaud the ability for her to take responsibility for her choices, though I do think that the crippling debt from post-secondary education (that many North American's have acquired) is unnecessary as there could be much more government investment/priority in developing education programs that build the capacity of citizens, and give them the ability to save and reinvest rather than throwing into the 'debt hole'.

This year is going to be MY year! 2019 was the worst year of my life. I lost my father, I gained weight, my diet spiralled out of control alongside my mental and physical health. I went into major debt, I got sick a lot... I want to live a more intentional and sustainable life. I want financial freedom so I don’t feel trapped. I want to get healthy and focus on self care. I want to have a better relationship with myself as a whole, to learn and grow as well as invest my time and money on building healthy relationships with others. To explore my passions and talents, to go outside of my comfort zone. To limit my use of social media and electronics. Look out 2020, this gal is coming out of hibernation! I am a retired lady who is going on a journey this year to see where my money is going. Will do a low buy especially on books, clothing and skin care. Have just created a real working budget system for the first time in my life. Will hone my library skills instead of using Amazon and happy wanders in book stores. It feels kind of scary, but I know it will bring freedom and joy in the long run. I really have just discovered uTube and all you encouraging counter-cultural ladies. (And listening a little more to Dave Ramsey.) so, here we go 2020!

I absolutely love my library! I was still borrowing physical book then started borrowing audiobooks via CDs and listened to them while commuting and have transitioned to online borrowing through my library! Also, if you're an Amazon Prime user, they offer a free book a month so I don't even subscribe to Kindle Unlimited or Audible. I love books but don't feel the need to have to subscribe monthly just to read because hello, they're free from the library! 😁📚❤

Finally, a KZbinr with substance! Your sincerity (not just in your revelations and vulnerability, but in your style of expression) are refreshing. I truly hope that you and others who relate to you aren’t too hard on yourselves...a lot of mindless consumer behaviour is dictated by greedy corporations who evangelize the shopping experience as a basic need. Sadly, we will always be bombarded by messages marketing the latest “it” thing. But like you remind us, we can take control over our finances (and our time+labor)...it’s not easy but it’s worth it.
@lyndseynorman93665 жыл бұрын
Buying clothes all the time was my problem too. Thank you for your encouragement, and you sound just like me! It's hard to admit that we have an addiction or that we are using something to fill a void or to mask our perceived inadequacies. That realisation is life changing though. I honestly really thought I NEEDED some of the things I've purchased in the past, but usually ended up selling them on or the novelty wore off almost immediately. I ended up with so many striped tops, white shirts etc etc because I needed the perfect one (quite funny isn't it?). I still find it difficult when I see someone looking amazing on social media though, so I am working on that. However, through minimising my spending on meaningless things I don't need, paying off the balance of my credit cards and saving properly, I have just purchased my first car with no help!! The pride I feel and the independence I will have is priceless. "if you change nothing, nothing changes' - I was feeling stuck and masked it with buying things, not realising it was perpetuating the cycle of being stuck! Thanks again from a new subscriber in the UK!

I am planning to do a low-buy year in 2020. Same reasons as to why you started yours. I could never work full time because of health challenges, but now that I have had my surgery, I am working a lot now. I used to be really good with not buying in excess or making myself wait, and saving money.. but once I stopped working all together I felt deprived. When I started working again, I felt like I needed to spend money on things I couldn't have when I was unemployed. I have had nothing to show for my job, that I love and put hard work into. I am a minimalist, so it made me wonder, "I am practicing minimalism in every area of my life except my finances." and I just felt this weight of 'how did I not see this?'. I mean, I should have thousands of dollars in my savings, but I don't. So this year, I'm going for it. I already had a budget and I am pretty good at it, but sometimes I don't get my paycheck right away and it hurts me bc I still spend too much. I am going to have less categories in my budget, and essentially only buy what a need with a few exceptions. I am really excited and glad that you made this video. It encourages me more that this is the right decision. xx

I'm trying a low buy until May and my trick is making list of the things that I think I need and wait a month. After that time I usually forget about them so they were wants. Also I signed up for the gym and every time I need the urge to shop I just go to the gym. I love your videos, they're really expiring! Thank you for making them!

So stoked to start my low/no buy2020 I started early.... haven't spent a penny since December 27th. It has shaken me, how much I think about spending money on non essential needs. My weakness is the gigantic dollar store next to the grocery.... its five or six bucks.... every time. Not this year. I got a new laptop last summer. Finally got around to it and reset my old laptop and sold it online.... had bought it on sale (40% off) for 375 and am selling it for 400. Am considering selling my wedding dress too. Instead of what I can buy.... what do I have that i can sell? I can surely find one thing a month that I can part with... even if only for the first six months of the year.

You've been an inspiration to me. I am finishing a 6-month shopping ban. I wasn't 100% successful in following it, but it did change my shopping habits, so I'm considering it a success! I'm not sure if I'll do a low buy next year or not. How motivating this is! Can you imagine how many ways you can use that money to build a fabulous future? I did the Ramsey plan, except I allowed myself to work on my emergency fund while I paid off the last 10k. I still had more to save to complete my emergency fund once I erased my consumer debt. The $1000 made me nervous and seeing money grow in an account gave me that extra kick to make it over the finish line with my emergency fund. You are a bright star for the masses who struggle with student debt. Looking forward to following your progress!
@brie935 жыл бұрын
Wow, I relate so much to everything you're saying. Besides the student debt. Don't have that. But I'm definetly living paycheck to paycheck- or even beyond my means- and every time I save anything I deplete it again when I spend too much on my credit and then have to pay it off. I think about shopping non stop and I love to buy stuff. But I often just end up feeling the same or worse after all my money is spent. And so even though it terrifies me I'm going to tiptoe into change by making January a no spend month. Pray for me. Lol.

Thank you for inspiring me to commit to a no-buy/low-buy year in 2020. Ahead of the challenge, I cleaned out all of my closets to see what I have and to organize it. I also did got a major reality check by scouring through my 2019 bank statements, credit card statements, and my 2019 Amazon purchases. Yikes!!! I did put 20% of my income into retirement savings last year, but that doesn't address the wasted money I have been shelling out in credit card interest and I have no liquid savings for emergencies. Next step, make a budget on Everydollar. It's very emotional 😭😭😭

But my problem area, make up is full stop. I know just from this start it will be life changing. I am happy to have found you, I unsubscribed from lots of beauty channels so having another encouraging one to watch is good. I am working on culling my wardrobe, my issue is I no longer need the beautiful professional clothes I own, but I can not bear to part with. I bought quality and timeless so its all still viable. I will just have to figure it out. I am no buy on clothes too, I didn't want to transfer my buying from makeup to clothes. Thanks for the great content, I am looking forward to watching all your videos.

I was never a spender until I got my baby in 2019. The amount of stuff and the cost of it, the shoving down the throat of educational, healthy, fashionable, developmental, "must have" items, without which my baby would just wilt like an unwatered flower, descended upon me like an avalanche. I got anxious, got some those items, but I don't feel better nor see any benefits. That makes even more insecure & want to buy different things! But really, my baby still plays with kitchen utensils and scrap cardboard. I believe the lowliest form of marketing is te one geared to/for children, and influencers (moms themselves) from their insta playrooms are shamelessly cranking up mom insecurities and fragility, as we know that is the time when all the shits and voids resurface. I'm looking forward to the budgeting video, as I need to know where the money's going. When it was just me, it was easy. I love how eloquent and sincere you are about the real causes. That is what we need on YT!

If this is your first, it’s almost inevitable because you’re so excited and you want them to have everything. If you decide to have more, the spending will be more restrained.

Don't be afraid to ask extended members of your family for clothes etc? Frequently my (big, extended) family group chat is just my cousins, second cousins aunties and uncles trying to give away things, mainly baby stuff. The last one was a very nice cot!

Wow, I just love the way you articulate the points. I've found this vid very useful and inspiring. You've obviously landed on something suited to you, that is building a life for you, which also benefits others. Good for you. For myself and since you asked, I am doing a no buy lo buy for the exact reasons you mentioned. I am tired of all the stress of minimum payments on credit cards and STILL not having the one thing I wanted, which is I don't even know anymore. The debt really stops me from enjoying any aspect of my life. I think the worst thing is its made me a super liar, not only to myself, as I never am honest with myself about the damage I've done, but towards my partner, who has no idea I carry/deal with this debt every single day. I want to live authentically. I really do. I hope replacing my time dreaming of stuff to spend money on with vids like this will help to change my mindset. Thanks. Will follow you. C

You have inspired me so much. I love your videos, your struggling, everything, you are so courageous to put it in videos. I think I have a problem, but I have managed to keep it undercover, and I feel so ashamed of it, I am not in debt, but I know I have huge issues with my spending habits since the last months of 2017 (I already had those, but they went overboard in 2017) I go on and off with my low buy habits but I definitely think I am so much better since I see videos like yours.

It’s incredible how we can pay our debts in 2-3 years or pay for our houses in 7 years instead of 20 or 30 just by budgeting and spending way less. Congrats on everything, you convinced me to try a no buy year (I have enough clothing, some get no wear at all) and use my money to pay debt and also into an account for a new house.

I can do relate to your story. I'm in my 50's now and have been debit free 3 times over my adult life. I have found that addressing getting out of debt and self control aren't enough. I've found for myself, I have to have long term and short term goals for myself financially, spiritually, physically and emotionally. I don't think the average debt freedom guru thinks about how to maintain discipline. Good for you for thinking beyond debt freedom.

I just happened to stumble across this video and I seriously feel like you were telling my story! I have struggled with this for years and continue to struggle with it. Sadly my husband does too! We have actually had "housechurch" in our home where Financial Peace Uni was being taught and did not adhere to Dave Ramsey's teaching because it was "too restrictive". 13 years after being in our home we are losing it. I no had I and my husband made better decisions we would not be in this predicament. I just wanted to say that your story or testimony is amazing

I really relate to this. The biggest fear I have around going low-buy is the anxiety of not being able to "have what I want". I really want to shift my perception from not being able to have what I want to me being in control of where my money goes. Thank you for this content and inspiring me!
@Christinamychas5 жыл бұрын
I felt the same anxiety and still do often. But it’s surprising how much you forget about what you wanted when you simply stall or delay it. And if you do buy it with saved cash and you wait, it often feels more worth it and ends up getting more use. I can’t count how many times I bought something bc I wanted it now and completely forgot about it. I hope that helps! Xo

Fantastic video. Very real and super brave. I LOVE that low buy is no longer a year challenge but a lifestyle for you. I am definitely doing a low buy this year for a specific reason: tired of apartment living and the constant construction noise is really fucking with my peace of mind. So we've decided to really really step up our savings game so we can buy a house. I would super appreciate it if you would make a video in more detail about the kinds of strategies/ideas/activities you do that replace the shopping habit. I feel like this is extremely important! When we do an activity that takes up a generous amount of our time and then we suddenly cut that activity out of our lives, we need something to fill that space, otherwise we might creep back into that destructive lifestyle. For example, me and my hubby got sober a few years back, and instead of going to the bars (which took a SIGNIFICANT amount of our time) we now go to different coffee shops and listen to live music, play cards, and drink a mega ton of coffee. So far, it's worked great. Please share more about what activities you do instead of shopping. Happy New Year!! xoxo

Amber Slemmer I definitely will! I talked about it a little but in this video but now I spend more time learning how to edit and create videos, working out and classes, cooking and learning about self-development + lifestyle design stuff (Eg podcasts, audiobooks on that topic) 🤗 - take some time to think about pursue an interest outside of shopping as a start xo

2019 was my semi-low buy but 2020 will be my no-buy. My main motivator is really how terrible buying clothes is for the environment. I bought a few things during Black Friday/Boxing Day which I regret (more just to use up store credit 🙈) but I’ve decided that I really don’t need anything else. If I do need anything, my goal is to try to buy more secondhand items as well. I started watching your Aritzia hauls but I am so happy to see your channel grow and differentiate itself from everyone else. Keep up the amazing work! 💪

I love it, Kate! Thank you! I agree, sustainability was another thing I learned from my low buy that I forgot to include in this video. It’s such a huge part of it and another great reason to buy less and use more of what we have. Cheers to your 2020!

So much of what you mentioned resonated with me and I am looking forward to being financially balanced. I honestly do not have any debt however, I am a spender and it is tied to; boredom and lack of self control. I want to be able to not constantly think about what my next purchase is going to be and how “happy” I will feel once I have that item. I want to purchase with intention.
