What kinds of things do you think about before you buy? 🛍

Is this something I will remember/care about in a year? Also, figure out your “hourly” rate for your time and calculating the number of hours I’d have to work to pay for an item to figure out if the spend is truly worth it!

In general I ask if I'll get as much use out of an item if I think I will. For makeup specifically I ask if it'll fill a gap in my stash.

During quarantine, I found myself shopping on Amazon way too much. A strategy that’s been working for me is, instead of putting the item in my cart, I put it on my wishlist. I hardly ever go looking through my wishlist and when I do, I find that I can delete a lot of the items because I’m no longer interested. I just thought I’d share this for anyone out there that may find this tip useful for themselves.

A tip I really value is to KNOW YOUR COLORS! Know your undertone, season etc. That way you buy clothing in the color that suits you and there's a much lower chance of it resting in the wardrobe most of the time.

The "cool down period" is the real deal. I've caught myself on the verge of impulse buying a number of times now; I especially get nervous when I see "Hurry! Almost sold out!". But after analyzing my wardrobe multiple times and just staying off the website, I realized that those potential buys were regrets waiting to happen. So, stepping away, forgetting about it for bit and then analyzing my wardrobe is definitely changing things for me.

I cannot even explain to you with ANY WORDS how extremely grateful I am for you and this content. I am a “shopaholic” aka I have a pretty intense shopping addiction that I’ve developed as a response to trauma. Good stuff that I’ve figured out with my therapist 🤪✌🏼 I have made so much progress just by watching your videos and also the videos/book of Madeleine Olivia. You guys are amazing. Obviously doing real trauma work with my therapist as well but you have helped me so so so much. THANK YOU.

I know this is my 3rd comment, but I have a scarcity complex, from being poor for so many years. I do have a college degree but I wanted to b home with my children. I was spending way too much money at the grocery store. Like hundreds of dollars a month. Me and my husband try to give a responsibility to whoever is the best at whatever it was. Due to the pandemic, my scarcity complex, impulse buying, buying more than we needed, not budgeting, I’ve turned the grocery shopping over to my husband. He doesn’t care if the kids want 4 different kinds of cereal or Debbie Cakes etc…he gets what we need. It’s taken the pressure off of me, especially bc I suffer from anxiety due to the trauma I endured in my first marriage. When I would see the prices on food just going up and up and up, I would get extremely anxious. My husband is relieved that I finally let him do the grocery shopping bc it’s saving us money now and it’s keeping us out of going deeper in debt.

I think to myself…the reason I like it means I already probably have something similar (mostly with clothes/makeup, but sometimes decor). And so I can talk myself out of buying it since I already own something like it. I tell myself “it’s okay to like something and not buy it. I like a lot of things, but I don’t have to own them.”

I like cost-per-wear as a starting concept but I think some types of items are just inherently going to be higher on that, like blazers or more delicate pieces you don't necessarily want to wear into the ground. Super important to think about subtle basics vs the more statement items as well

Love the blazer. 💚Waiting is my go-to method to avoid impulse purchases as well! If I see a clothing or makeup item that excites me, I typically wait until the next paycheque and reevaluate (more paycheques if the purchase is pricey). Usually, the initial excitement has faded and I don't purchase it.

Love your jacket! Looks good on you! I am very thrifty but love that 'high' of buying something. I try not to buy something straight up. but wait, till it's on sale, till I go back to that shop again... My husband says 'Just buy it!' , but the waiting game can be thrilling too. And if it's not there, sold out, etc then I tell myself that it just wasn't meant to be.

I like to ask myself if what I’m buying is filling a gap that I’ve already identified. So for my closet for example, if the item I want fills a gap in my wardrobe that I’ve been wanting to fill (whether it’s in color, cut, fabric, fit, etc), then I’ll go ahead and buy it. If it’s just a pretty thing that sparked the, ‘Oh I want it!’ thought process, I’ll bookmark it and see if I return to it later. If I do, and do so multiple times then I know it’ll be a good purchase but if I forget about it, then it’s an impulse that I’ll be fine w/o. Same thing with other larger purchases like tech and hobby stuff.

You know what’s funny about the waiting period. I try not to note down the item I want, nor take a photo of it or keep a screenshot, because I actually find that after a day or so I usually totally forget that I wanted the item in the first place! 😂 Definitely a want and not a need.
@Christinamychas

I really enjoyed this video! There are a couple of things I like to think about before I spend my money on clothes. The first thing, especially if I am thrifting, is whether I would pay full price for the item. The second is if I have proof of concept for the item. I has a satiny slip dress that I loved the fit of, but didn’t like the color too much. i sold that one and bought the same dress second hand in a navy color, and I wear the navy so much more now.

I've waited on purchasing things that I've wanted and then getting super upset when they sold out and spend double or triple the money trying to find something that replaces it but not exactly the same so I'm still disappointed. I figure I'll just buy the thing and return it later if I don't like it. Most places have great return policies. I've also saved money by dropping out of college haha. Funny I make like five times more than my friend who has a degree.

I like to think in terms of basics and fashion trends. I don't find that I need to spend often on the basics as I have some pants, skirts, and dresses that I consider timeless for me as they fit and suit my age. I like to add a fashion trend or two to look modern. I always buy these on sale as they may end up in the giveaway pile in a couple of years. I am enjoying your videos. Thanks.

At the end of last year, I put a couple things in my wishlist, but decided to hold off on purchasing them until I came home from a long trip. By the time I was ready to order, everything had drastically increased in price. At first I was extremely disappointed, but now I've reconsidered my priorities and am ultimately happy that I missed that window to splurge on pretty things.

My head does really strange thoughts to keep my coping strategy nr 1 - the spending. I watch your videos for example and then i feel like i have my finances together (even if i really do not). I feel satisfied and safe. Then its saturday and i dont have anything else to do and so i go out to h&m and then i spend a whole lot of money. Then i feel guilty but instead of stopping then, i think "well. Its already lost." and then my spending escalates quickly. My daughter needed some new trousers but instead of thinking how many she does need, i ordered A LOT of jeans. Like 13 or 14. I dont know. Then i have spend wayyy to much money and this sucks.

Thank you, thank you, thank you Christina! I needed this video. I'm a minimalist. But, sadly the kind of it I am is: decluttering, buying new things, using them a few times, and then decuttering them and giving the items to my best friend. My house changes the way it looks every couple months, but it is still very minimal, but costly.

I rarely regret clothing purchases but I still quite often regret skincare and makeup purchases because I am looking for the miracle cream or great lipstick. I feel this so strongly! When my skin is “bad” it’s when there’s so much temptation to buy that miracle serum - but usually my skin just needs the bare minimum like a drugstore cleanser and moisturizer to calm down.

This sounds so familiar, especially with the make up. I've spend so much time looking for the perfect small eyeshadow palette with just the "exact" right colours. Same goes for a few lipsticks. Just to find out that none of them were that and that the first small palette did it's job just fine, next to some blush as pink eyeshadow combined with a little metallic highlighter. 🤦

How much % would you recommend for fun money? I just can't figure out what will fit for me.. Love the tips! Thank you

It’s a range! Ramit Sethi suggests 20-35% of takehome (as long as your fixed don’t exceed 50-60% of TH and you’re still able to save 5-10% and invest 10%). You’d also adjust this if you have debt.

Never been so early like today. But was very late on this: 23 year old me splurging and 27 year old me needing to pay it off... not worth it anymore to 'buy now and pay later' ^^' But learnd from it, growing from it xD

Thank goodness I never cared about fashion. I’ll buy a tshirt from goodwill and wear it till it falls apart. My cozy pet wear has to be pennies

Is that 30 wears benchmark per year or overall, ever? Bc it doesn't seem hard to get 30 wears over the lifetime of an item? 🤔

Agreed, it's not unusual for me to hit 40+ wears per season for my most worn pants/shoes at least. Tops might be different
