My mom met my son (he's 2) but she died in October from cancer so she'll never see him grow up. It's the hardest thing I've ever gone through. Sending you lots of love. You're doing a great job!❤

My mom died from cancer at the end of 2021. She helped with planning my wedding and picking out dresses but didn't get to see me get married. Now we're thinking about having kids and it makes me sad to know that they will never meet their grandma; she loved babies so much! I was looking forward to her playing with them and taking photos together.

Being a child of immigrants is hard. I can assure you a lot of us don’t really “know” our parents. You are not alone. Kudos to you for pouring into your daughter.

I hear ya. My (Trinidadian) mum passed 2yrs ago and there are still things I don't know about her past. I don't even know how her mother (my grandmother) passed. I also know nothing about my older sister's dad because he left when my sister was 2. Whenever we had questions, my mum was vague with her responses, or didn't respond at all.

Child of Barbadian immigrants here. I think in the black community whether America, the Caribbean, or Africa, there just isn’t open dialogue for some reason.

I completely agree our parents tend to be closed off. I grow up with my parents saying I’m not your friend and I believe that because of that they never share about their feelings. But us new generation has to do better. But you’re strong and doing better for your child.

Great video Temi. I’m sorry about your mom passing, but thanks for opening up. Yes it’s good that you’re not raising Genesis to be so disconnected from the world. I’m someone who had a childhood like that, and by my parents not teaching me how to carry on basic conversations with people, it’s affected me even till now. Im almost 24. If you’re not taught, you never actually outgrow not knowing how to talk with people. Im trying to unlearn that pattern for myself. Absolutely continue to protect her from the world because people can’t be trusted, and continue to be a good mom to her, but keep giving her the confidence to have a voice. Eventually, she’ll be 23 and needing to speak up for herself too.

Thank you for sharing. I also follow you on IG. You and I got so much in common. Your daughter and mine were born on the same day. My mother past away in 2015, also cancer😢 And I really feel you on this one. I did had a great relationship with my mom and I miss her so much. She is the only person I wanted here when raising my daughter. And also the father of my daughter and I broke up last year, so yeah we got alot in common❤

It’s tough…my daughter is 5 now and quite the extrovert. I have a supportive close family (but they live out of state) and am in a healthy, long-term relationship. But becoming a mother was different. I feel thankful for a couple of mom friends I have made to vent to and playdates and even just happy hour with. I pray you meet people that will support you and add to your motherhood journey whether it’s through YT, local groups (e.g. mocha Mom’s, mommy +me, hiking, etc,).

Wasn’t sure of the direction of this video but wow, I understand on all levels. My mom was an alcoholic much of my childhood, and we didn’t reconnect until I turn 30 and I’m so happy that we did work on our relationship but I didn’t understand what it took to be a mom until I had my daughter and every day I just be like wow this woman was so strong.

Death is hard but you just move forward with it. My son's father and husband passed in February and my son was only 4. I am still grieving and my son still has fond memories of his daddy. I just try to appreciate every moment I still have to spend with my mom. She's getting older and life is not a guarantee. Share pictures of your mom with your daughter and if you have any pictures show her.

Sorry for your loss, i'm curious to know when your mom broke the news that she was diagnosed with breast cancer did you endeavor to find out more information? I am also Nigerian and often times my parents try to maintain normalcy by downplaying certain things but it's not enough for me to just hear them say it's being handled especially for something as serious as cancer. I need to know the details down to the staging and if I can't get that information through them I immediately research the health concern and ask more pointed follow-up questions. If you haven't already, I think it's also very important for you to get checked as well since your family has a predisposition for cancer just to be on the safe side,

I rushed to watch it because I lost my mum when I was 6 months pregnant, we were pretty close and now that I’ve been raising my daughter without her, it’s the most painful thing because I can’t call her to ask questions. So many layers to this! Let me first laugh with you! I have had 3 children one naturally my last baby I toooo was begging for the c section lmaooooo and begging for the meds. Labor is hard it’s traumatic during and sometimes after. I work as a birth doula (me just watching) takes me a few days mentally to recover. My mom passed when I was young I’m so grateful she was the mom she was. She died of breast cancer and she literally spent her last days preparing me and nurturing me, I wish you could have had that. I hope you find you a Village because it’s so necessary!! Motherhood is hard so I can’t even imagine doing it alone as far as without women supporting me* I also hope you have healed or find healing. This video made me think of my own relationship with my daughter who’s sooooo much like me, sometimes I have to remind myself she isn’t me. I have to remind myself sometimes I am mirroring the love I didn’t get after my mother passed. (I daily remind myself to be kind)This video has me feelings so many feelings and I am so grateful for the reminder of compassion and love. I’m sending you sooo much strength and love. Your doing great!

I too come from a West African household and do not have a good relationship with my mother. It’s a struggle to just call her. I think it’s better if I keep my distance, but I’ll admit I feel guilty sometimes because I have plenty of motherless cousins and see how devastating it is.

If you don't mind me saying: you're motherless too and so you can also have some compassion for yourself, and you don't have to feel so guilty. Even if your mum is physically present, if your relationship isn't close then it's still a type of loss and grief

Our parents died the same year and now that I'm getting older there's like pivotal moments that I feel like I would have wanted my dad to experience with me. I was blessed enough where he knew he was passing we just didn't. And he started telling me about his life in full details so I got the opportunity to ask and say just about everything. I mean he was literally waking me out of my sleep because he will remember something he wanted to say to me. That should have been a clue but I was 16.

I was adopted by my aunt since birth because my mom was mentally ill. My mom passed on my birthday in 2020,my aunt passed last yr and my grandmother passed this yr. Even though I don’t have kids yet I often think abt how life would be if I had still had their support. I have family who I can call but they’re up in age now so do I wait until I’m in position mentally or do I rush and have kids in hope that what’s left of my village will be there😢. That’s a question I ask myself often
