***G'day all, it has been brought to my attention that the overseas version of this book is an inferior product that is of low quality. I had no control over this, and I am very disappointed in the publisher, and I am genuinely so sorry to anyone who purchased the book and received the substandard version. My advice is to not buy the book until this matter is rectified and I get an update from the publisher as to why this occurred. Again, my sincere apologies and thank you so much for the support. I almost died on my birthday. My heartrate kept crashing, so I was flown by air ambulance to the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne. Overnight my heart kept stopping. I was so scared. The doctors decided to give me a pacemaker, even though I was so young. I feel much better now even though I have other medical issues. Like you, when I am out in the field I forget about all my problems and really live in the moment. I love bird photography and enjoy capturing the beauty of birds. Now I have Z30 + 24-50 18-140 - 70-300 5.6E and at last the sigma 150-600 C. I'm feeling so good that after 5 years I'm back on my feet, out of my bed at least a couple of hours a day. That's the reason I bought the 150-600C - Not sure why but my copy is not sharp like yours while the 70-300 give me spectacular images. Please Keep up with your positivity and your smile!! I can relate, I was diagnosed with Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (enlarged heart) in 2010 at the age of 57. Two open heart surgeries later (2010 & 2012), and after being told I would need a new heart in 2013, I'm still here...with the same heart I was born with. I picked up photography because my doctor told me I needed some exercise, I can't do strenuous stuff like going to the gym, so I started walking, with my camera shooting birds and everything that crawled. Now I have two cameras, a bag full of lenses, a P700 printer, and I am deep into this hobby now. So, welcome to the club! By the way, I have an ICD in my chest as well.

Man, what a heartfelt story, and genuine honesty. It's a difficult story to tell and we all appreciate your bravery in doing so. It's also hard to believe you started so late and you are now as experienced and knowledgable as anyone I know in many aspects of bird photography. You and Jan Wegener are two of my faves, but the way you talk off the cuff shows your mind functioning at a very high level, even after your attack. I was 3 months in bed, unable to walk from a slipped disc (a chiropractor's favor to me), headed towards an operation, but through exercises have gained most of my mobility back (I've never spoken of this on social media). But birding is my new love and I think many of us experience the euphoria you speak of. Your videos are inspiring, fun to watch, and chock full of information and we all wish you the best health and enough financial success to teach, bird and purchase all the equipment you'll ever want or need 🙂

Morning Duade, I hope you're well. Thank you for sharing your story, it takes courage to open up like that. I was a Police Officer with Victoria Police and was recently ill health retired in September last year after a 20 years in 'the job'. You can probably guess why. The last three years have been a challenge not just for me but for my family and especially my wife. I have found getting out into nature to be incredibly therapeutic. Sometimes I just sit there absorbing nature's energy while photography gets set on the back burner for a while. I always leave the bush feeling calmer but energised at the same time. Anyway Duade, thanks again. All the best, Brian.

Great video and thanks for sharing. My bird photography started very similar. I was an avid cyclist. Riding 20-40 miles a day… when I was 42 I suffered a heart attack. Sometimes referred to as the widow maker. Thankfully the doctors saved my life. 2 years later emergency blood transfusion and a second stent. This is when I saw a bird in my yard and can’t remember ever seeing one. The 5 minutes it took me to research I was hooked! I’m glad to be alive and I have bird photography to thank for keeping me from being overwhelmed by the fear of almost dying again. Love your videos and look forward to watching them. One of my arborists is a Native American, Apache. He explained his experience to me this way, as best as I can relate it. “I was walking down my life path but didn’t know it wasn’t the direction for me. Then there was the Wham of God, and it led me to a new path, the right one for me.” He is what I’d call a tree whisperer. When he comes he greets and caresses the trees and then he knows what they need. He has revived several for me that have been impacted by the effects of climate change here in southern Arizona. He makes a difference one tree at a time. By the way, his name is Gabriel. Who knows why these things occur, but for those of us who follow you, we are grateful for the path your experience led you to and for all you share with us and teach us. Cheers.

Amazing, my heart attack was on 29/01/19, followed by double bypass open heart surgery a week latter. Four weeks after this one bypass collapsed, 2 stents were inserted. Months later my wife bought me a camera to help pass time. I am totally hooked and the learning curve is amazing. Learning heaps from your videos. Thank you.

Fantastic story I am so glad you shared it. I only have three wildlife photographers that make me say "Fantastic another video to watch." and you are one of the three. I have promised myself I am going to go further afield this year and spend more time out there, at 79 I know I only have a few years left if I am lucky and I want to make the best of them and you have made me a better photographer. Thank you.

I've been a photographer since my dad taught me B&W darkroom in 1958 at 8 years old, and got into landscape photography in about 2004 when I switched to DSLR, with a Rebel XT-->XTi->T4i-->70D--.80D, and then got an R7 this summer. Last summer, when I found myself not wanting to walk around due to knee pain, I had that knee replaced so I could resume my hobby, which I've kicked into higher gear with the R7! That's how much photography means to me, so your story resonates with me.

Philip, congrats on the R7 and sharing your story, that is a lot of experience you have and it must be amazing to see the progression over the years. Cheers, Duade

Thank you for sharing your story. I have found that bird photography has become instrumental in helping my mental health. I have a history in photography, but hardly touched a camera for about 10 years. When lockdowns started I spent time walking round my local cemetery, and I too took my 40D and a very old Sigma 70-200. I had never really considered photographing birds before, and still sometimes have to check my bird book to find out what I have photographed. However I have found that the negative thoughts that I have disappear when I am out in the field, sometimes I get frustrated that I don't get the photos that I want but can appreciate the beauty of nature, and bird song can always raise my spirit. I can't say I have an affinity for lying in the mud but maybe that will come 😊

Duade Thanks for the story about how you survived a life changing experience. I started bird photography during Covid as I started walking the beach instead of the foothills and mountains as I could distance from other people on the beach. Recently I was photographing Elephant Seals at the beach and noticed California Condors flying overhead which I started photographing the birds.

I had read your story online, but hearing about it first hand is another thing. It allows me to connect to you at a different level. My life changed in 1994, 6 months after I married my current wife. I was diagnosed with testicular cancer and under went surgery and 4 months of chemotherapy treatment. Since then I have had two other cancer surgeries and several outpatient procedures to treat bladder cancer along with two lower back surgeries to correct ruptured disc. I finally was able to retire in May of 2020 just in time for the Covid lockdowns. I'm hopeful that this year will be a turning point, but with the war in Europe and ridiculous prices here in the states that's kind of doubtful now. Keep up the great videos.

Wow! What a triumphant story. I just found you on KZbin and am enjoying your videos. So glad you shared your story with us. I'm a birder and am now learning about bird photography. I wore out 2 Nikon P-950s and after that last one broke, I decided to learn more so I purchased the Nikon Zf. I am using a Nikon 500mm Prime lens, 5.6. for my birds. I always wanted to photograph birds in flight and was unable to do this with the bridge camera, so now I'm like a sponge learning all that I can. Thank you for your helpful videos! I am a retired registered nurse in America and I felt the intensity of your medical struggles through this message. So thankful you not only have survived, but thrived!

Hi Duade! The reason I started watching your videos and eventually subscribed was not only they were very helpful, but also because you appeared not as a big celebrity photographer/youtuber but as a familiar neighbourhood guy who takes beautiful photos, makes mistakes and try to correct them. After this video, you feel like someone in the family I didn’t know. Wish you all the best in your life. Take care of your health, buddy.
