So. Wow! Can't say I was expecting this reception from my first video, guess Netflix really pissed a lot of people off. But really, it's been such a heartening experience to have such a big reaction to something I've wanted to try out for such a very long time. I'm extremely grateful for the opportunity I have with this channel and can't wait to get more stuff out for you people. I have another video on Season Splitting that should be interesting for anyone who was disappointed with what happened to Inside Job. To those of you who've subscribed I hope you'll enjoy what else I have in store. And to those of you haven't yet decided to stick around for more content from this channel I hope you'll change your mind. The two videos currently posted are a good example of what this channel is gonna look. Long form Video Essay's that concern the entirety of some Movie/TV Show/Video Game/Whatever like this video, and shorter more focused deep dives on specific topics effecting the entertainment industry like the Season Splitting video. Basically whatever is interesting for me to talk about which hopefully will be interesting to you too. As always, B+

Yeah, Netflix has pissed me off for sure. The only thing I think improved the service was that they started keeping their promise to not delete your watch list as long as you rejoined within a year. One time I canceled it for two months before signing back up and it was gone. But now, Netflix's site has become so clunky and tricky to control, Amazon Prime Video is easier to use, seems to work even faster now than it did a year ago, all while only taking a quarter of the time to reach a titles audio/dubbing status. Back to Netflix, I am not quite certain if I have the count is correct but it seems like it has two conditions for refreshing/shuffling the page. With each successful left click without using the back button (which triggers another shuffle) it seems like it has about 5 clicks before it reloads and shuffles. Or it just does so anyway after 5 minutes.

I was one of the background artists on the show, (BG Design - meaning I draw the BG's with line art to then get painted by the paint crew. I started on episode 2, which is why my name isn't in the credits for episode 1,) it kickstarted my career in animation when I was asked to join the show, and it was a genuine blast to work on as I grew attached to it as a show that would immediately define my position in animation. Inside Job didn't BREAK Netflix's watch records, but all of us were PUMPED when it launched and saw what it meant to so many people, so much fan art! It was great, we felt in late 2021 that surely Netflix will recognize that the show has a big enough initial fan base to keep going for at least a few more seasons and grow even bigger. When Netflix launched part 2 of season 1, I'll admit, it felt like they didn't bother to announce it in any way whatsoever. We heard a second season was on the way, which was exciting at least -- I was planning to go back on production for the show in March 2023, potentially as BG Design Lead, but in early January we heard the news from our showrunner that it was cancelled. When I found out I messaged the other crew and we were all just *gutted* at the sudden unceremonious end to it AFTER getting the green light. Season 2 was already in a pro-production phase, people were being hired etc, then blip, nope. To this day I'm still not 100% of the exact reason other than the blanket excuse 'Economic Downturn,' but Season 2 was not going to be very expensive to produce. It would have barely cost Netflix anything to at LEAST give 8 to 10 episodes for Season 2 to complete the main cast's arch and tie up some ends etc. But as Netflix got a new CEO, as is tradition in Hollywood, "new guy comes in, throws everything the old guy was doing out to justify the leadership change." Sigh. I still wish I could be working on it right now, we all do, but it seems it was killed IMO for no real reason other than to save a buck and frivolous internal politics. Netflix dissolved its entire animation studio, will focus now only on animated features done via outsource studios. It was a short lived, wild ride at Netflix. We helped them out through the early days of the pandemic by working diligently from home in 2020, it painted a really great outlook for many artists that Netflix could become a new bastion for animation in the new internet media era. But as they're just another silicon valley tech company, we should've probably realized that wouldn't have remotely lasted. All of the team on Inside Job have moved onto other shows, different studios, etc. (My old Background Lead, Tom Eichacker, went onto do art for the upcoming TMNT Movie! I went on to work at Titmouse on Lower Decks season 2 through 4.) But, if Shion ever runs another new show, I'd definitely come back to work on it, whatever it is. PS: There were many urges to want to add Covid-19 references in the show's backgrounds, (at least I wanted to lol) but I think with the way 2020 was going for a lot of people, it was best to probably shelve THAT one for now. Same for touching Jeffery Epstein as a topic. PSPS: Yes, the show was made almost entirely in the work-from-home lockdowns. My first week on the show was the first week of lockdowns, go figure. In October 2021, on the eve of the launch of the show, a wrap / launch celebration party was hosted in the Silver Lake area and was the first time I got to meet everyone on the team in-person. The party was privately hosted by Shion and Alex, since Netflix didn't want to give us one. (Understandable for that point in the pandemic, but goes to show how much faith the showrunners had for the show and its crew.) PSPSPS: They made some cool crew gifts for us. One was a Cognito Inc drink tumblr set (nice set of glasses with the Incognito Inc logo on them,) and the other was, yes, the literal purple "The Crew" team jackets Raegan hands out to everyone near the end of Part 1. I have that jacket, for real lol. Update April 2023: I’ve moved onto becoming background lead/supervisor on the new upcoming seasons of King of the Hill. This is a ridiculously cool opportunity that working on Inside Job eventually lead me to.

Hi! I’ve been a HUGE fan of the show since 2021, and the cancellation news shattered my heart and I’m still not over it (I don’t think I’ll ever be), especially coz we thought another season was guaranteed. Inside job is truly one of the best animated sitcoms out there, and despite it not breaking records, it developed a very dedicated fan base (the media engagement alone) The cast and crew deserved better❤ 💔 I wish the best for you guys and even hope that the show, even miraculously, gets the ending it deserves someday. Ps- you mentioned that season 2 was going to be cheaper to produce and that just makes me angrier at Nflix’s decision. Also YES, we all felt that Netflix didn’t advertise P2 enough, for a show that trended in the top 10 of soo many countries

Cool to see people like you talking about Inside Job and how much it meant to the crew. That last episode made me FEEL things, like a lot of the character writing did honestly. That is rare. They should have recognized that this show had so much more left to give. But I suppose the irony of a show about power dynamics, conspiracies, and corporate dissatisfaction getting shut down by one of the leading entertainment conglomerates in the world is not lost on me. Good luck on your future endeavors, I've seen the TMNT trailers and that animation style is sick, also Titmouse seems like an absolutely phenomenal studio from what I've seen at least.

Tbh I’m really glad they never gave Brett and Reagan a romantic relationship I think the part about them being best friends without any awkward sexual tension is nice and refreshing I think they just work well off each other and work well together, and I feel adding romantic tension would’ve removed that aspect of their relationship

@jessmontgomery3454
@jessmontgomery3454 Жыл бұрын
I think that they could've ended up together if the show had more seasons. But only at the very end as a happy ending, in that Regan never could give up enough time from her work and her science to really have a normal relationship. But Brett's loyalty and humanity are so near infinite, and frankly, as a stay at home dad's go, he'd be a catch for her. And it fits them both really just wanting a loving family, sure friends can surrogate that but on theme here i feel it would complete the circle. Hell, one idea thats probably on theme with the shows erratic nature would be if it was them accidentally having kids while both blind drunk, (probably not Brett's fault, and nothing sinister), i just think Rand being furious that Brett's inferior dumb genes are watering down his biological legacy, which would make for an entire arc in of itself 😂 But whatever, my crappy fan dreams can wash away, like nerdy tears in the rain.

30:00 Reagan IS extremely naive and hypocritical. That’s the arc they didn’t get to expand upon. Unfortunately. :( The thing about smart people is sometimes they are too smart to expand into other territories of development, bc they can compensate, or even over compensate, in other areas of their life. Reagan is emotionally stunted. She’s dealing with trauma, cynicism, and delusions that she’s both knowingly and unknowingly inherited from her father. She’s narcissistic enough to believe she can create the answers and achieve world domination successfully. She thinks everyone wants to rule the world! So she does too, duh. But her love interest doesn’t want to rule the world, he wants a normalcy and peace she can’t imagine herself functioning within. But I think eventually she would’ve torn the world to pieces trying to get to the top. I think her arc would’ve been her realizing grabbing power is inherently corrupting, bc in order to maintain control, you have to make morally compromising choices. She hasn’t reached the point yet where she sees her actions as anything more morally compromising than fucking Starbucks lol. TL; DR: Actually Reagan is kinda a doofus overcompensating with tech and genius like her father to truly engage with the emotional turmoil of dissecting how evil her workplace is. I wish they had time to continue exploring this arc :/

She also believed that both Steatler and her leaving the shadow government would ultimately ruin their relationship and she desperately tries to avoid this by putting Steatler in a position that makes him deeply uncomfortable. All because she believes that this would save their relationship without talking to Steatler about it. She should have just trusted that they could find other ways in which they can bond with one another. She really tries to force the relationship instead of let it all happen naturally To be fair she has gone to character development that she's able to sacrifice her own happiness for the people she loves. So thats something

I feel like the whole sense of it moving slow and not landing jokes every turn was something given up in favor of making a coherent story line with character development, maybe to favor a more loose episodic style later. I honestly think that's where part 2 is much better at making it more aloof and adding more B stories to play on the different characters. Really I feel like the humor is not usually a laugh out loud style but rather a dry comical genius humor. I feel like rewatching part 1 is better after seeing part 2, when you're more familiar with the world and less anticipating what the show is going to be. There's too many great moments to ignore even with the moments that jokes feel pushed or not delivered perfectly to be shocking or play on expectations, but at least none of them feel hastily or unnecessarily inserted like family guy or other adult animations mostly do every ten seconds. I still play inside job on repeat hoping to add to the popularity on Netflix hoping they feel pressured to give it more seasons

Sucks that the one animated show on Netflix that I actually liked is getting canceled. I agree that Brett basically started off like the "everyman" character you're supposed to identify with, but seemed too gullible to be believeable. By the end of the first season though, you realize he *is* the heart of the show even if he's not the one you identify with. Amazing writing in that respect, IMHO.

Production cannot know which characters are going to click with audiences and which ones are going to be used to provide support to the better loved characters. That's why shows always improve after their first seasons, production gets real world insight into their work and can correct or remove things the audience doesn't like and further polish the most loved aspects to make them even shinier.

great video. It's cathartic to have this eulogy for a show ended way too soon. It's Netflix's fault that they cancelled a show so soon that had an impact in it's fans. I really felt this show had potential to rival Rick and Morty as the adult sci fi cartoon comedy, but Netlix's allgorithm thought better. Inside Job and 1899 are two of my favourite what could have beens. Shows cancelled way too soon and with so much promise, but callously ended by a studio that does not understand how television works. Ironic for a studio that has produced must see tv. They prioritize viewership over story and as a result will cancel shows that don't fit that cheap, easy to understand aesthetic. I mean they gave another family guy clone to the brickleberry guy and cancel an original comedy like this. For shame.

Agree, Inside Job had what a lot of new Netflix shows lack: the potential to become it own unique, interesting, genuine thing. Like I can forgive them for canceling Mindhunter. It was an expensive and taxing show to make, but I can't wrap my mind around them being so broke they can't afford this type of smaller budget experimentation for more than ONE season.

When I canceled my Netflix subscription, I highlighted how they treated Inside Job as the main reason why. This was genuinely one of my favorite shows that they produced. It was cynical, but it was also genuine and raw. Between this and placing the only other show I watch on Netflix on limbo and pretending that it doesn't exist (hint: it's my pfp), I just couldn't justify keeping the subscription anymore.

I would say that possibly the reason was a lack of comprehension of their audience relationship. Recent changes have killed their service, ie stagnation of the discovery experience, including "fresh" original content, but also reputation damage from reboots and adaptations that come across as tone-deaf, hurts all content coming from Netflix, even especially if it's above average. Probably as a result of the "stale" search & discovery menu & profile implementation, people just don't know what to watch, or they selectively watch series content, they don't often jump in/out of new content as much because of the now altered and perceived value vs time investment. Especially when the price has doubled or exploded for some consumers due to IP/home restrictions. It's also something that affects every menu, UX, UI or website / store, in that there has to be a revelation or wellspring of new ideas, inspired or aggregated, or just plain random things, or people will "doom scroll" past content, not knowing or understanding why they don't like the service. The way that Netflix uses internal auditing to discover and promote content is likely a flawed implementation, because it doesn't allow discoverability over genre preferences. Which leads to people tuning out when they are looking for something new in a category /menu option / vertical tier, because they are becoming slowly driven back to their inertial preferences instead of aggregated dynamic/spurious discovery.

I get what you mean when you say "Reagan erases Ron's memories just like her dad did to her". There does seem to be a parallel going on there. Rand and Reagan both believed they were doing what was best for the person they loved, (and themselves) but I don't agree that it's exactly the same. Rand deleted Orrin from Reagan's mind himself. I understand that he wasn't trying to hurt her when he did that, but it was still against her will. Ron, on the other hand, was so haunted by the things he'd done that he WANTED to forget and he would have eventually erased his own memories with or without Reagan. The reason Ron was even at that meeting was because he was caught trying to drink an entire vat of mind erasing fluid, and in that reality where they both worked at Cognito, he wound up erasing his memories on his own. Again, I get what you mean. lol I just don't agree that it's EXACTLY the same.

You know, when people talk about clickbait, they mostly mean titles and thumbnails that depict content that is factually not there. What you did was way smarter. You just hint at a topic in your title and instead of committing your video to it in some meaningful capacity, you just went on a complete tangent to talk about a puzzle piece of the topic itself. Now that's smart, because there is no way, given your format, that the audience could deduce whether or not they have been lied to by just scrolling through the video like they can with the much cheaper versions of click bait out there. You really did it, my guy.

I was a big fan of the first season, but honestly the second season was kinda meh. Going all in on Reagan's dating life shows the network/writers didn't recognize what made the show special: it's a workplace comedy. All the things that made the first season great - the group dynamics, social satire, friendship between Reagan and Brett, etc - all got drowned out by a misguided attempt to make the new season feel "different" and "new" by making the focal point Reagan's relationship (and let's be honest, her bf is pretty unwatchable even if you like John Cusack).
