How Netflix's Avatar The Last Airbender turned a Bad Adaptation into a Good Show

The Live Action Avatar is a terrible adaptation of the original show. But that didn't stop it from being a good show.
Netflix has given us yet another live action adaptation of a beloved animated property. This time bringing new life to the 2005 Nickelodeon classic, Avatar The Last Airbender.
Like many people online, I had a good number of issues with the way the story of Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Zuko was adapted. The Netflix Avatar show missing key themes and characterizations that made the original what it was.
While some good has come of the new take, there's very little to defend the existence of this show. It doesn't feel necessary, and yet, I left season one already anticipating the next leg of the journey. And excited to see how they adapt new events and characters.
Avatar The Last Airbender's Live Action counterpart has a good deal of ups and downs. Some segments being handled extraordinarily well, and others missing the mark. It's a show that was hard to call strictly good or bad. It's a terrible adaptation of the original show's heart, but still manages something worthwhile.
I felt pretty adverse in my avatar the last airbender netflix reaction.
So let's take a deeper look into Netflix's Avatar show. And see how this new adaptation manages to completely fail the original, all while still somehow making something of itself.

They removed the comedy, removed important aspects of characters personalities, combined story lines despite having 8 hours to play with (same amount of time that the Book of Water had in the cartoon) and couldn't stop telling viewers stuff instead of letting viewers figure things out, it's a bad series and bad adaption.

Yea i dislike how they changed Sokka and Suki’s dynamic. She was pretty much reduced to a powerful person with a crush, rather than someone that Sokka learns the art of himility and respect from. He still learned respect from her as a teacher, but it didnt come from the same place as the animated version did, which was superior from my POV. Also Bumi was done injustice I certainly agree on that point. His role in the live action actually cheapened his significance in Aang’s life. He became an old friend Aang had to make amends with than the guy who helps Aang think like a mad genius.

Yeah, I was not happy with the way they portrayed these two. Suki at least has room for growth, but I just don’t see how they course correct Bumi from here. It feels like such a disservice to who he is as a character. It’s just a weird adaptation in general because it’s clearly inferior to the original show and doesn’t really add anything that feels like this version needed to exist. It just does

I was one of the people who was hopeful about the live action, but after watching it, I completely got so disappointed that I didn't even want a season 2, 3. I don't even want any live action of any anime from how disappointed I was, it kinda made me realize that some stories are simply best when animated.

Every story should, and usually does, have a lot of time put into determining the correct medium for it to be told. It’s often why animated stories don’t translate well to live action. Current filmmaking has been skewing to this weird idea that live action immediately makes it superior. Which is what holds things like Avatar back.

Personally, I enjoyed it. I see that it has flaws and is by no means on the same level as the original, but it's also doing a lot of things right. I was left wanting for a season 2, and whenever that happens I know the show can't be all that bad.

I tend to be more forgiving because I've seen the original series but I can't disagree that newcomers especially adult ones will say. Yup this show is for kids. Ironic to the fact that a cartoon treats its audience more maturely than its live adaptation GOT counterpart speaks volumes. I would recommend for newcomers to watch the original because this live adaptation is fan service at best. No wonder the OG creators left the production set because of "Creative Differences" with Netflix. Look I already saw Star Wars, I already saw the new Marvel movies, I already saw the new Rings of Power. I'm already numb to the feeling of being disappointed. As long as I have the original. Hollywood can milk these franchise all they want.

Good show? Nope, so far from the mark it makes my head spin.. Netflix's adaptation is a disservice to the original. Theres a reason the original creators left the team that worked on the adaptation early on.

People on twitter are f'ing crazy. More and more unhealthy insular communities every year. I will suggest it's not a good show though, with the combination of painfully bland writing with a surprising number of inconsistencies and some uneven acting (though a lot of the acting was also quite good for child actors.) I doubt a Netflix show that uneven would be talked about without the massive nostalgia built up over many years now, and the many fans wishing it could be reborn.

It wouldn’t be right away. I didn’t follow Percy Jackson growing up, so I have little knowledge on the source material. Definitely something I could look into doing, but it’ll take a good deal of time.

Other than the talking down to the audience (which is big, but fixable in the next season), and the condensing of episodes (especially in Omashu) I didn’t have many problems with the new adaptation.
