I'll never object to having an edited down/more kid friendly version of Dragon Ball for TV networks as long as an uncut version exists. The Nicktoons version may not be the ideal way to watch, but I'm sure a lot of kids were able to get into Dragon Ball that way, and that's totally a good thing. And besides that, as numerous as the edits were, Funimation really went for the bare minimum changes there. They didn't alter music or completely change character motivations, they tried to be as faithful as they could within the limitations the network gave them. They had faith in the original work, and did everything they could to preserve that- Something other studios (mostly 4Kids at that point in time) really could've learned from.

I love the NickToons version of DBZ Kai. Sure, it's censored, but it's somehow still really good. I actually prefer a few of the dialogue changes as well. And I'd still rather watch it than the uncut dub of Z since this is still technically more manga accurate.

It's funny how the censored version is more creative when it comes to the dialogue, like for example there are multiple ways they censored "damn it" instead of always using "darn it" It makes the uncensored seem pretty repetitive in comparison especially when played back this closely to each other.

Yeah I felt the uncut dub kinda overdid swearing (moreso the actual swear words than the kinda half family friendly "damn") like the show is still supposed to be for kids even if old enough to handle some mild swearing, I'm guessing they added all the extra swearing not in the Japanese script to get a more mature rating to keep things uncut and justify playing the show on adult swim but like, they could just realise teens are their own demographic already.

Imagine having to do two sets of voice dubbing scripts for one anime. One for uncut and one for a certain cartoon channel. Also, imagine Vegeta's VA having to dub the dialogue for two versions of the same show. Pity they couldn't put DBZ Kai on Nick's teen channel (they could have an anime block like Toonami) to handle less censored English dubs.

It is, actually, but what constitutes a kid show in America and Japan is very different. In any case, the show's generally aimed at a young (kid to teen) audience, so having it put in a daytime/afternoon slot on a channel that aired cartoons is a no-brainier. It's the same reason Dragon Ball Z, and plenty other anime, aired on Cartoon Network's Toonami block. It's the best place/time for it to get stellar ratings, reach a wide audience, and market the franchise's toys/video games to viewers.

Yes, that's right, in Germany it was the same in a channel that used to show anime. At a certain point, they started censoring them to make it more kid-friendly. But they should just stop censoring. There are exceptions, but the makers of a series had themselves to blame. And if they notice that it's far too brutal, then it only shows late in the evening and not in the morning or afternoon where little kids might be able to watch. So DragonBall is not suitable for children because of the brutality and swear words and that should have been considered before putting it on a kids program.

As long as an uncut version exists, there's not much of an issue in them putting together a broadcast cut for TV. Cartoon Network censored plenty of anime too when they ran on their old Toonami block. Not to this degree, but still.

I agree that it should've been established that dbz (as well as db and dbgt) were not meant for kids. Maybe it's because not a lot of people in the past didn't watch a lot of anime. I'm probably wrong since I didn't know any adults in my childhood that still watch cartoons/anime and all the adults I was surrounded with thought it was just for kids, including my mom. Had she known the truth, she would've actually kept me from watching Adult Swim when I was a kid.
