How Nikola Jokic Took Over The NBA (without trying)

Nikola Jokic has just had one of the best championship runs of all-time, leading the playoffs in points, rebounds, assists & true shooting percentage. And he proved all his doubters wrong about him. And boy, there were so many of them.
This isn't just the story of how Jokic lead the Denver Nuggets to their first championship in franchise history, but also a story of how overlooked the Nuggets have been. How overlooked Jamal Murray was. How overlooked Michael Malone was. And especially how overlooked the two-time MVP Nikola Jokic was (and still is, even after winning a title as the first option & anchor of the defense).
And finally, a story of how Jokic took his sweet revenge of all his doubters (notably Nick Wright, Kendrick Perkins, Chris Mannix & Stephen A. Smith). And did it in a way only the Joker can.

The best part about this whole thing is that the nba media only congratulated and showed him love when they absolutely had to. They never thought/wanted him to actually win a ship. There is underlying racism in all of this let’s be honest. Perkins was fine with singing his praises as long as he ain’t go too far or do too much. Then he’s undeniably the best player in the world and is running through the west to win a ship and KP turns into the biggest hater ever. Food for thought

im a warriors fan, and 2022 round 1 of the playoffs was my first time getting to see jokic really up close and personal even tho he won two mvps, denver games werent televised. i was blown away, and came away from that series feeling like we were lucky he didnt have even a LITTLE bit of help even tho we won 4-1. this past season, i told lakers fans after they beat us, get ready for the jokic experience. they laughed in my face. and then he swept them and won a title.

And media clowns were out here ROASTING Jokic for losing with more than 1 guards/wings who are just 1 year later out of the league, and its not because of their age. 😂 For some reason a lot of the media just straight hate the dude, and hate that he won MVPs. It's crazy, and it has to be because they only watched at most the 2 or 3 national Denver games a year

This is a masterpiece As a Nuggets fan we had to put up with so much dishonest shit from the NBA media. They clearly don’t watch our games and only go off narratives. And yet, despite it all, I’d forgotten the extent of HOW bad their coverage was. Kendrick Perkins, Nick Wrong and Keyshawn should be publicly shamed every day of the off season for their dog shit takes Jokic wins FMVP while their idol Joel Emflop ghosts another playoffs while getting cooked in PnR.

NBA refs tried to steal games from the Nuggets via corrupt officiating. G4 against Lakers had a series of blatantly corrupt calls, especially in the last 5 minutes of the game. James fouled Jokic on back to back possessions & the crooked ref called both of those offensive fouls, which left Jokic with 5 fouls, basically preventing him from playing any meaningful defense for last 5 minutes. Then came the off-ball foul called against Gordon. All these corrupt calls allowed Lakers to tie the game at 111 with a minute left. The same ref then tried to thieve ball possession from Nuggets by claiming the ball went out off of a Denver player. Luckily, another ref had had enough of his corruption & overturned his corrupt call, giving the ball back to Denver. Nuggets inbounded the ball & Jokic scored the winning bucket (and was against robbed of an AND1)

@@tropickman game 1 in the bubble was one of the worst officiated games I’ve seen. Lakers were the better team but remove game 1 it would have been 3-1 with one game being decided by a buzzer beater, shows the Nuggest weren’t that far away when fully healthy and that was without AG. This year I was waiting for the refs to ‘extend’ the series but tbh they weren’t too bad, ultimately the gap in talent was too large and the Lakers kept collapsing the defence allowing wide open 3s, which we were hitting

As much as I wanted The Bucks and Giannis to win it all again this year, Nikola Jokic needed this championship even more. His legacy most likely would have been tarnished if he did not take his team to the promise land this year, with the 2 league MVPs he won before this season.

What's even crazier is Bron had 2 MVP's before his championship, was never this disrespected, AND had to run to a stacked team of all-timers. Jokic had no other all-stars and dominated the post-season like none other, and at the very least there is no playoff run that is BETTER than Joks. Not MJs best, Bron, Steph, Magic, Larry, etc. Who all, btw, had stacked teams of all-stars. Jokic will still not get anywhere near the respect he deserves, not gonna happen.

The thing is he is the embodiment of values that americans have come to resent. He's a family man. He doesn't care one iota about fame. He has an absolute focus on the game, yet he's not consumed by it. It's his job, not his soul. He simply doesn't fit the mould of what the talking-heads and useless media pundits have crafted for someone with his achievements - and like whiny, petty little children, they cannot admit that the mould they've crafted is wrong, that the avenue to greatness is not the one they paved. Therefore, they'll never truly acknowledge his greatness without some caveat: "he's incredible, but can't jump over a curb", "He's a miracle at offense, a disgrace at defense", so on and so forth. In the end of the day, he'll never be talked with the same reverence as others, especially other Americans, because he simply isn't one of them. And that's the sad truth.

Amazing video. As someone who doesn't live in the US I'm astounded by this compilation of trash talk by most of your sports media outlets. It's hard for me to consider that so many journalists and commentators spend time trying to tear down such a unique athlete. Constantly shifting the narrative to satisfy their agenda. Unfortunately it's not surprising either, as I've seen this in another sport over the last decade or so - tennis, with Novak Djokovic. I'm pretty sure he also got called boring etc. Notice a pattern? I wonder how many NBA fans even know that Jokic plays in a league belonging to a country that bombed his just over 20 years ago. Here'e oping he achieves a three-peat, although even then they will find reasons for him not being on the same level as such-and-such player.

Like I live for the 76ers downfall, I thought Jokic should’ve three-peated, which makes his win ever so much more hilarious. Btw Embiid won’t ever go down as a consecutive MVP cause the leagues finally clamping down on flopping (watch him barely get 27 a game)

I never understood the eye test argument. How can you watch Jokic dominate with skill and precision, in a way a Center never has, and not see the best player in the league? They also say, "Well I would rather have all these different players instead of Jokic, so he can't be that good." The only thing that proves is that they are poor evaluators of basketball.

Giannis, Jokic, Luka, Embiid all already leaving a big mark on the league. When it's all said and done though, I really hope we get to see a couple Bucks vs Nuggets finals and this decade being defined by Giannis and Jokic and to see those two both go down as top 10 players all time if not higher. It wouldn't hurt to see Luka or Embiid steal a chip somewhere in there too, but I really hope championships start going the first two player's way.

This video is amazing, I’ve been watching these type of long form essays for the nba for years and yours have became my fav as of recent. As a nuggets fan I was extremely happy to see a doc video made about our long come up especially bc of how you point out the obvious hypocrisy that has haunted my mind for x many years lmao. Much love and keep going, finished the vid in one day 😭

It’s amazing the amount of work you put into your content. It’s excellent work. Just a bit of advice - a video like this will perform much better with the algorithm if you break it into 4 parts and release one part each day for 4 days. The way the YT algorithm works long form content is very rarely recommended and if it is the average new viewer will see 4 hours and move on. If you broke your content like this one into 4 parts I think you can grow your channel much quicker. Love your work man, hope to see the channel grow quick👍🏻

About his attitude, yea I feel that people in America, or honestly in the west in general, want their athletes to eat sleep and live their sport. Like it’s crazy that someone so good would be this chill and laid back about his life. And sports fans just forget that they too are humans and not everyone is the same. Not everyone is a psychopath like Jordan and Kobe, there are winners out there that are different (and don’t need to beat up their teammates lol) like Duncan and Jokic.

Thank you for all your hard work that is put into these videos. Keep up the great work. Jokic is valuable for his team. More valuable that other players are to their team. More valuable is not the same as better. What I learned from all those I watched until now is: all these media persons and analysts love comparing apples to grapes and have no clue whatsoever about statistics or even basketball. The game changes every couple of years. Comparing players from those areas based on statistics is plain wrong.

One thing I believe people don't understand fully is - Jokic LOVES the game, Jokic CARES about the game... It's a matter of life or death for him... When he's ON THE COURT. Off the court - basketball is not at the top of his priorities. But... When he's ON THE COURT... when GAME IS ON... He's a warrior, an avenger, do-or-die winner. Off the court... there's LIFE... HIS LIFE. His family, his hobbies, friends, ... his time. He's kind of a prototypical Serb... Not to say that all Serbs are like him or good as he is or good people when it comes right down to it... But there's that... which is common... an Idea that life is more and bigger than ANY game.

He is, atm, the best basketball player on the planet and an all time great. The ONLY thing he has to prove is whether or not it's for the long haul. And if he even continues at the exact same clip as now, for 3 - 4 years, he's immediately in serious, and I mean serious, GOAT conversation, and if he goes well into his 30's doijng this... I don't know how GOAT conversations could ever even be taken seriously. He is that ridiculous. This run blows any other out of the water for best 3 year stretch in a career. Everything we have proves that, the stats, the video, it's not a question even if some want to believe otherwise. And you know what? Contrary to American belief, all work and no play is in fact, objectively, *not* best for the body, the mind, or even your ability to function at peak level. Jokic has obviously found the perfect regiment for him, that clearly works, and that's all that matters. He may be at peak *because* he doesn't take it so serious that his entire life is his job. He can think clearer, feel better without all the anxiety and weight on his shoulders and thus maximize his inherent gift for seeing the floor on offense and making the correct play. He had to learn how to play better defense, that didn't come naturally. But he stepped up and while it may not be elite, it certainly is enough to reach the highest plateau there is. And he did it with, arguably, only himself as a star on a team that admitedly has terrific role players and a *borderline* star in Murray (so we'll say at least one and a half stars though Murray is on the line if not over it already). *He won a championship without 2 other big stars* and without 2 other hall of famers like Bird, Magic, or Jordan on his second three-peat. "He went through a bunch of play-ins." Bitch, those play-ins beat the so called legitimate contenders to get there. If you are going to say the Nuggets had it easy, what does that make Philly, or Boston, or Golden State? Does that mean we have the weakest bunch of teams in NBA history? No, you aren't going to say that, but by saying it was easy then you are implying it. *So stfu.* One and a half stars barreled through to a championship, taking down star studded teams with players in most people's top 10. *STFU, and then STFU again, lock that mouth up throw away the key.* It is the greatest post-season by a single player, and the best post-season by a team that by historical metrics should have an improbable path to a ring. 2 MVP's (should have been 3) and a Finals MVP carrying a load no other star has ever had to and still hoist the trophy. The best stretch of any career, no competition.

Jordan 88-90 and Lebron 08-10 are still in the mix, I think. I would guess because of pace of play the counting stats of Jokic are a little inflated compared to those peaks. But this past year where he had 70% TS (70!) might have been the best single season anyone's ever had.

Jokic actually strikes me as the type of guy who, like Jordan, might win three titles and then give it up to go and train horses. Unlike Jordan though, I don't think he'd be coming back.

I wouldn't say he's as good as Larry Bird, because in my opinion Larry Bird is the best all around player to ever play the game, but if he puts the effort in on defense and wins a couple of more championships, who knows I might change my opinion on who the GOAT is. He's legitimately got a shot at being that great. Personally, I think he's the best player in the league and I don't think it's close. I just think there are a lot of things to Bird's game that you can't put into numbers and those are the things Jokic needs to work on. Also, he should've been the first player since Bird and only the 4th in NBA history to win 3 straight MVPs, let's be honest.

Amazing video. It sucks how much he is overlooked. But the NBA is for entertainment and as much as me and many others love watching him, many casuals get bored of his play, and therefore there isn't much for them and the media to talk about. Which is why they talk about other teams and players. Same thing with Tim Duncan. I hope Nuggets can win again to further silence the haters.
