Sometimes, I wish I could spend a day with Kurts mindset and thoughts. He inspires me with his music, even though I don’t plan on becoming a singer or musician (though I do sing for fun). I actually want to be an actress, and music helps me connect to people, my feelings, and the beauty in this world. I love it so much. Yes! It is so frustrating when the fanboys pretend that they were just random words and incredulously believe everything that he said even after he admitted that he said some things to troll the press. I guess the idea of a primitive just randomly spouting words is something that some people find appealing.
@luiscypher1307
@luiscypher1307 Жыл бұрын
@@wvu05 Yup people love to romanticize the slacker poet archetype who just accidentally and effortlessly creates genius works of artistic expression without really trying. Nothing could be further from the truth,you don't get to be as good and as successful as Cobain without serious dedication,painstaking practice and indomitable drive. Luck and talent are obvious necessary components to that equation but it all starts with an uncompromising vision and pure unbridled will. The people closest to him say the same.
@wvu05
@wvu05 Жыл бұрын
@@luiscypher1307 Indeed. I just dealt with one recently who insisted that those quotes were the gospel instead of an obvious attempt to get reporters off his back. I even asked how this person explained that "Polly" was inspired by a story in the newspaper and many of the details of the song matched the story in the paper, and how he came up with the lyrics from "Scentless Apprentice" based on his favorite book. The dummy even wrote off the lengthy rehearsal sessions that contradicted his statements on "musicianship" and even included a line about knowing the names of the chords. I gave my now-seven-year-old daughter a ukulele for Christmas when she was three, and she refuses to learn chords. You know what she does? Plays random sour notes. Yes, it is true that his music wasn't incredibly complex, but try to make up music that is simple and memorable and you'll find that is quite another story. Quite frankly, I think that Kurt Cobain did a huge disservice to his fans by refusing to admit the work involved because it gave them the false illusion that it was easy.
@luiscypher1307
@luiscypher1307 11 ай бұрын
@@wvu05 True,to a certain degree his inspiration was definitely detrimental in many ways but on the other side of that coin though it also had some undeniably positive outcomes too like the effect Nirvana's success had on the industry and the death of the hair metal 'hairspray queen' era of highly technical, mastabatory virtuoso guitarism. But yes your spot on as much as his music brought back Beetlesque melodic simplicity & raw unbridled emotive authenticity that resonanated with an entire disenfranchised generation it also perpetuated many hopelessly deluded daydreamers to believe they too could be the next overnight music sensation & all they would need is some flannel,passion and a cheap guitar. The reality though is musicians like Cobain are inately born with something the vast majority of the world is not...inexplicable talent,lol.
@wvu05
@wvu05 11 ай бұрын
@@luiscypher1307 Indeed. In all honesty, looking at the Nirvana story, I think that the real unsung hero is Tracy Marander, because she's the one who paid the bills while he learned how to get better. I love his music and always will, but I just wish that he would have admitted, "I practiced several hours a day, listen to a lot of music, and have a skill for finding a melody and making specific stories sound universal." I get the slacker romanticism and feeling overwhelmed by it all, but I want _more_ people who write good songs and play good music.

Yes, _"all in all is all we are"_ is one version. Believe me, I paid close attention to that [Buddhist-like] praise. *All in All is All we All are* is also used in other live recordings. Its not redundant from a deep eastern philosophical perspective. See below example. *ALL within the ALL is ALL we ALL are. Peace.* Breakdown: *ALL* (finite beginning-ending/changing matter) *within the ALL* (Infinite Beginningless-Endingless/Non-Changing Spirit) *is ALL we ALL are,* therefore you and I are smaller consciousness finite fragments/specks/part and parcel of god, but we are NOT the Supreme Infinite Spirit Realm Supernatural Consciousness Summit that is Godhead while we exist as lower awareness finite realm material beings. *Peace.* Now do you realize you, I, we, are all specks of god. *A Complete Macrobiotic Yin Yang Philosophic Understanding Combined With Its Practical Dietary Discipline Is Timeless Universal Law. Orange-Cat-Bad lol dude I get the straight forward meaning in one of the most straight forward lines of a nirvana song. Most of us do. Not that deep. Just good writing from existing and reading etc,. What I was saying is those aren’t HIS lyrics for the song. He probably knew that saying and broke it down so it made sense to him and the song. It doesn’t go much further than saying we are all of the all. He just chose his own way of saying a very straight forward statement.

Nirvana meaning: (in Buddhism) a transcendent state in which there is neither suffering, desire, nor sense of self, and the subject is released from the effects of karma and the cycle of death and rebirth. It represents the final goal of Buddhism. *All in All is All we All are* fits very well with ancient eastern Buddhist philosophy. But so does the short version you say, as does *All in One is One is/in All* and *All in All is what we are* etc. Under *Published on Sep 21, 2012* is an explanation of an early written and late 1991 live performance version of All Apologies with some very different lyrics. Like I already said: I've heard the *"All in All is All we All are"* in a live performance and the 8D multidirectional (posted below) being repeated over and over which is different from this listed below very different ending. All in all is all we are All in one is one is all All in all is what we are All in one is one in all All is one is one in all All is one and one is all All in one is one in all All in one is one in all *Nirvana - All Apologies (Early Version) [Lyrics]* - Incesticide23 channel kzbin.info/www/bejne/rp6rg62OnbRkgNE Next, down below, though the printed lyrics show it as you say, it is very clear and especially so to the end that Kurt is saying *All in All is All we All are.* Even Sinead O'connor clearly sings it as All in All is All we All are... Thus, from Kurt himself, there are changed renditions of these lyrics. Nirvana - All Apologies | 8D Audio *multidirectional* - yourmusicwaves channel kzbin.info/www/bejne/a6KnoHR_i7h_Z5o

What you wanted to do was indifferent to everyone, no pat on the backs no encouragement. "A mosquito,my libido" is a subtle reference to heroin imo A mosquito is like a needle drawing blood and sucking vitality & heroin diminishes sex drive.Actually i find a lot of vague veiled references to drugs in Cobains lyrics that only people with an inside understanding may pick up on like "Doused in mud soaked in bleach" from Come as you are on 'Nevermind' is another reference to needles or more precisely cleaning them or "Easy in an easy chair,poop as hard as rock" from Mr Mustache on 'Bleach' is about nodding off & constipation both symptomatic of opiate use. There are many more that i wont bring up but im guessing Cobain wrote about what he felt,experienced and knew like most decent writers do,drug use being just one of those things he was synonymous for plus he also enjoyed being quite cheeky & provocative.

@@chimpman5584 Okay sure. So basically, art is at its best when its universal. When anyone who ever lived could or could have relate to it in some way. When one makes art that is too direct and specific, less people can relate to the sentiments that are being expressed. So it's not that Kurt's approach to art was to "just say shit" that doesn't have to make sense, even though he claimed to do so in an effort to troll the casuals like you, but rather his approach was to create art that contains enough ambiguity to resonate with anyone. This kind of art tends to be more timeless because you can twist and bend the meaning to your liking, for whatever situation you're in, qnd whatever emotion you happen to be feeling. Virtually all the great artists have done the same. Bob Dylan's lyrics can be very cryptic. The greatest painters used ambiguity. Shakespeare as well. But you can go back to thinking that the objective is to "just say shit". The rest of us will enjoy the incredible work these artists have left to us!

@@nicholasmaxwell9899 OK, I see what you're saying and I used to subscribe to that concept in my teens and even early 20s, however, sometimes that feels like a cop-out. In no way am I saying Nirvana didn't make great music, heck some of their stuff is still unmatched to this day, but I do feel that Kurt was waaay to young to write anything meaningful, and once I read some of his random scribbling before his death, I realised he was a very naive and confused young man who didn't know how to express his thoughts in any meaningful way linguistically speaking, so he expressed them through sound conveying emotion. Kudos to him for that, the sound resonates with me too. But what I won't do is sit here and read deeply into the meanings of words that when strung together have no meaning at all. I remember whilst studying psychology I read about Sigmund Freud. He would come up with his whacky theories about fancying your mother and always follow them up with: but you'll never know because it's all in the subconscious. To me that's just a cop-out, very much like artists who create their art and say well what does it mean to you? It's like, bruh...you created the shit....how about you tell me what you meant instead of deflecting from the fact that you evidently don't know either.
@nicholasmaxwell9899
@nicholasmaxwell9899 4 жыл бұрын
@@chimpman5584 You made some good points, and so I think the answer is probably somewhere in the middle. He was definitely young and naive and he did write a lot of random lyrics because as you said, I think he was more concerned with the sound and attitude of his music. However, I think if you were to go song by song, you would be surprised by how many of his songs do have tangible themes and sensible lyrics. It's not all "a mosquito, my libido" gibberish. Kurt Cobain was very young, angry, and naive. But he was also super intelligent in an artistic way, and he was an absolute visionary. He did everything for Nirvana, wrote the music + lyrics, did all their artwork, made all their business decisions. And maybe sometimes artists use ambiguity as a cop out, but I don't think that was the case with Kurt. When I read his lyricism and hear him talk about writing, I can tell that cryptic style of writing is just his personal taste. It's what he enjoys more. I can totally relate to it because I'm the same way. I like when the artist let's me interpret things in multiple ways. Bob Dylan, widely regarded as the greatest lyricist ever, likes his art that way too. Some artists may use that as a cop out, but others like Kurt Cobain, Bob Dylan, Jim Morrison, John Lennon, etc.. use it as a way to give their listeners a chance to be creative themselves within their interpretations. I think it usually means something to them, but by leaving it somewhat cryptic or open ended, any single human being can use their interpretation to mold it into something they can connect with. I think that's very powerful.

Kurt was a genius musician and lyricist. He could use opposites n contradictions in his lyrics n music to inspire a feeling of wholeness!? Almost like the yin/yang symbol which becomes a whole circle! As pple we tend to see stuff in polarity. Even our brains are split into 2 hemispheres! We tend to judge things as right/wrong, us/them, left/right, black/white n Kurt's genius let him use that polarity to paint a gray picture with multiple interpretations! Combined with the music though, which could also convey so many different emotions (sometimes in the same song such as sad/happy like in Lithium!) it would leave me feeling more whole, energised n at one with myself!

pandemic7 He mention many bands influenced him during his life time,some of them are easier to see and more direct than others,on Nirvana's music.(young marble giants for ex.). Tad Doyle from Tad said that when Gang of Four did some shows in America to present the"Entertainment"album,he went to see them with Kurt (this was pre Nirvana),and that concert changed both their lifes forever. Now about The Pixies,from the weird,cryptic and nonsence lyrics,to the"quite-loud"type of song writing,not forgeting the raging raspy screams from Frank Black,there's plenty of that in Nirvana. Damn,Kurt even said once that all he wanted was to have a band who sounded like them(pixies). He never said that about the Beatles. The only time Kurt was near to meet Frank,he ran away feeling embarrased. He never knew Frank. Sure his admiration for the Beatles was public as his taste for melody and pop bands. But sometimes he's clearly mention them to shock the"all-noise-punk-rockers"that he also was tired off. And to be fair, a band that use pop in their work,to mention The Beatles is almost a certain thing,is like the Metal people mention Black Sabbath. You just can't avoid some names. There's Beatles in Nirvana but their sound is a lot more Pixes.

I think that Kurt's biggest lyrical influence was Black Francis. Francis already had what appeared to be a highly original style and what Kurt was doing was like that only with a little more feeling. He did draw out seemingly genuine feelings and then satirized that right in the next line. I also think he figured out a way to write songs that would be both original and easy. And that was all helped by him being a good guitarist. There were other guitarists in the band but when it came to recording it was all Kurt's guitar.

And this is why Nirvana is still relevant til this day. Because no one knows the EXACT meanings of their songs, so you constantly listen to try to figure it out, but you never will. You just take what you think it means and run with it. __________ For example, here's my take on just the first line for the lyrics to "In Bloom": "Sell The Kids For Food" Meaning: In my opinion that could mean going to the sperm bank to donate your sperm or "sell the kids" for money to buy food because you're broke. ____________ "Weather Changes Moods, Spring Is Here Again, Reproductive Glands" Meaning: So the song is called "In Bloom", and what time does things begin to "Bloom"? Spring. And the weather does change your mood doesn't it? Rain could mean sadness or for others it could mean peaceful/relaxing. "Spring Is Here Again, Reproductive Glands" Since it's spring, the plants and flowers are reproducing, using their "Reproductive Glands" because they're "IN BLOOM". __________ See how genius Nirvana is? See how abstract that art of writing lyrics is? The amazing part is that was just MY OPINION on what I think "In Bloom" is talking about. That's the mystery of Nirvana, because everyone has their own interpretation to what their songs are talking about, but because it's so abstract, you'll never get to the bottom of it and thus it's 2021 and WE KEEP ON LISTENING to Nirvana til this day.

Here’s a note for viewers who are dismayed at my description of Bush and Silverchair. When Nirvana rose to international popularity, record labels rushed out a wave of bands intended to capitalize on the ‘grunge’ trend (grunge is a term that went stale almost immediately but was used heavily at the time). Bush and Silverchair were among the bands that were suddenly in heavy MTV rotation, and teenagers like me gobbled up their albums and tickets to their shows. I’m not even criticizing the talent of those bands. I’m just saying that prior to the release of Nevermind, there was no place for Bush, Silverchair and their ilk, and immediately afterwards, those bands were packaged and marketed in a commercial trend that Nirvana spearheaded (it's also worth noting that Daniel Johns was twelve years old when Nevermind was released). Some bands, like Silverchair, consciously differentiated themselves from that trend later. That said, listen to the lyrics on ‘Sixteen Stone’ and tell me that Gavin Rossdale wasn’t aping Kurt’s dadaist lyrical style.

People, especially nowadays, try to dissect every little thing about anything (especially song lyrics) whether it be on a podcast, in the comment section like this, or just talking to somebody or a friend. It’s human nature to want to/think you know a lot when sometimes people are looking too much into something that’s not even there. Just enjoy yourself and the lyrics n trust me, it’ll make sense, it does for me anyways (and marijuana helps not gonna lie lol) but get outside n breath in the air, turn your phone on silent, and the world seems a little less complicated and peaceful
