Sri Nisargadatta - The Absolute Essence

Күн бұрын

This text is taken from the book 'I am that' .
Nisargadatta Maharaj often spoke about his own spiritual journey and practice, and how his guru’s teachings led him to his own eventual self-realisation. In his most widely read book, ‘I Am That’, Nisargadatta speaks many times of his practice and the profound effect his own guru had upon him. The following are direct quotes from I Am That focusing on what Nisargadatta spoke of his own sadhana (spiritual practice) and the teachings of his own Guru.
Nisargadatta Maharaj (17 April 1897 - 8 September 1981), born Maruti Shivrampant Kambli, was an Indian guru of nondualism, belonging to the Inchagiri Sampradaya, a lineage of teachers from the Navnath Sampradaya and Lingayat Shaivism.

“The body mind is like a room, but I may not live in it all the time.”, excellent. And the child is, indeed, the very first encounter with the “I am”. I am not certain if I can recall the very first, but I do recall a couple of instances where “I” was doing something- like being afraid to cross a field on my grandfather’s farm in Wisconsin, and thinking “… but it wasn’t dangerous, before I was never alone but with my mother and grandfather, and there were no snakes till that occurred to me… if I could just believe that it was safe again…” so I compromised and ran for it. It’s one of the first “I am” experiences I can recall, and it had a big impact upon me. Another was being first jealous then ashamed, (or at least thinking it was not becoming to do so) of something cruel I had been thinking towards another child. Don’t know which was first, but they’re both likely relevant in this respect, I would assume. I tend to think the field must have been first, I doubt and hope I was NOT so immediately plunged into and steeped in “mortal” sin! Haha, but… maaaaaybe! Cheers

People most often want to "attain" enlightenment, because they believe it is an answer to something, or it is some kind of reward that must be earned. They are still thinking in the conventional. To be enlightened, one must be the most unconventional sort of person, in the sense that whatever the world believes, whatever you believe, you must reject it. It's not an easy thing to look at one's self and determine that it is false, because there is so much wrapped up in it. I look back on the person I was before, and just sort of smirk and nod at him. So much going on with that person, and none of it was real.

I saw that above video and posted my followup questions. Q1) If I don't need to focus on any outward items or objects or thoughts then where to turn the mind as you can't focus on nothing in the initial stages at least. It's best to take daily examples. Say I am sitting alone with a lot of thoughts coming naturally. Do I need to simply watch it without any attachment ? Then thoughts keep coming and sometimes I start sleeping or getting naps too. Q2) Does it mean whenever any thought starts affecting my mind do I need to remember "I am that" and don't need to panic and keep quiet? Q3) What happens to some object theft in my home do I need to reach out to the police etc or think to myself about its outer activity and still think "I am that". The intention is how much I need to go outward or restrain myself? In this case how much time I need to spend in finding that missing object. Instead can I spend this time meditating on the "I am that" without making any further efforts? Q4) Do Maharaj say minimal effort for our surviving and spend the rest of the time in doing sadhana? Thanks

I forgot to mention this in my first response. Thanks a million for this video. I have seen many videos of maharaj itself speaking and no one asked him about how he attained etc. We need to document how Maharaj lived daily life including when he sleeps and gets up , his daily routine and how much time he devotes for family and spirituality and he manages his finances and family member expectations then it's very easy to grasp what he is talking about.. Please associate as much as daily examples and get the answers.. Please note I am not doubting his teachings and raise unrelated questions. The only intention is to make his teachings crystal clear and I don't see any better approach other than to validate his teachings with real time scenarios as much as possible. Yes I am trusting maharaj very well but my problem is not even being able to understand the full meaning of what he is actually trying to convey in the first place.

@@srigowriswarna Narayananaji, Namaskar, At the outset let me make myself very clear that I am not a realized person. ( I say person because mind-body identification is still there. And in practical world we have to refer ourselves as a person ). I am an ordinary Sadhak like most people. My answers will therefore be limited to my actual experience. Q1,Q2: Focussing our attention 'not on outward objects' and staying in the 'I am' can get very tricky.With meditation and regularly practicing it my mind gets quiet on many occasions ( but no guarantee ) . Being witness to my thoughts as much as possible is the only choice. I don't force myself to be quiet. If my mind is restless , it is restless, if I feel sleepy and drowsy , I just sleep for a while. The key is ,at least I make sure that I am aware of the present moment's mind-body condition. Sometimes I listen to bhajans , or listen to my own videos to get out of the slumber. I just take it easy and go with the flow, knowing that this shall also pass away. I don't panic at all because at least intellectually I am convinced that I am not body-mind. I don't do any chanting and remind myself mechanically ' I am that'. Q3. Every living being will behave according to three gunas. So if there is theft one must report it to police. If there is any other emergency, or important things to be taken care of that must attended.We live in dual-world ( howsoever illusory that might be) and laws of the dual world must be respected. This outer activity must continue and I think , it is not in conflict with the inner.As soon as the dust settles down I get back to my Sadhana. Q4. Maharaj is just saying do your regular duties -whatever they might be , but don't add more , in fact stay with the minimum. Having said that, if you have less entanglements in Samsara the better , one may get more time to meditate, I agree. But my practical experience is I cannot meditate for a long time, for me at this phase in life its not possible because firstly it may be due to my conditioning and secondly I have many household responsibilities.So whenever I have spare time and energy I meditate in short bursts. I don't make an egoic goal to force myself to meditate.Let it take its own time.I am not in a hurry at all. I hope this will be of some help. Thanks again -Suresh

Fills me with dread, that if I haven't gotten it quickly, as he did, I may have fooled myself for decades, thinking I could actually do this. This path may not be for too many, and if it is, you should get it quickly. If not, then maybe it is not the best path for you?
@srinisargadatta
@srinisargadatta 10 ай бұрын
It's understandable to feel a sense of dread or concern about the pace of your spiritual journey, especially when comparing yourself to the experiences of others like Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj. However, it's important to remember that each individual's path is unique and that spiritual awakening or realization can unfold differently for everyone. Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj was a renowned spiritual teacher, and his experiences and realizations were specific to his own journey. Comparing oneself to such exceptional individuals can be misleading and create unnecessary pressure. The idea that if you haven't "gotten it quickly" means you may have fooled yourself or that this path may not be for you might be an overly rigid and self-critical perspective. Awakening, self-realization, or spiritual growth often takes time and patience. Some people may experience profound insights or shifts more quickly, while others may progress at a slower pace. It's crucial not to judge yourself based on someone else's timeline. Moreover, different spiritual paths and teachings resonate with different people. What works for one person may not necessarily be the best fit for another. Trusting your intuition and finding a path that aligns with your inner inclinations and beliefs can be more beneficial than trying to force rapid progress on a particular spiritual journey. Spiritual growth is a gradual process, and it's essential to be compassionate with yourself and maintain an open mind on the path to self-discovery. Instead of comparing yourself to others, focus on your own progress and the insights you gain along the way. Embrace the journey, and remember that each step, no matter how small, contributes to your overall growth and understanding.
