This old video has some nice work in it that I would like to share, please enjoy and comment.
This video was done 20 years ago back in 2002 when I was younger and had more spring. I do things a little different now but with the same principles. When doing this video I had recently returned from Montana where I was studying with one of my favourite horsemen Ronnie Willis at a Parelli colt start camp, there were also some other handy blokes there from Australia, Dave Stewart and Steve Byrne.
This video covers a modified for teaching list I put together to help people start their own horses. BUT make sure they are well halter trained first, this has was halter trained the day before this video and was done with no edits and only the halter training as preparation. It is a fine example of an unhandled horse learning and if you watch some of my other videos with horses that have learnt bad habits you can see the importance of doing it right from the beginning.
Enjoy!
Shane
As usual, I have attached a link to a list of these tasks so can print them and take them out with you when training.

I've been watching since I found you working with Tarzan. I am so in awe of your calm. You never get flustered and your voice is always even toned. So much control and composure. Key to working with a reactive horse. Great to watch someone who knows what they're doing.

Thanks valleygrl, I might see if I can find Tarzans video and put it up, I have one of when I saddled him which was a tad exciting. :) Shane

This horse has obviously had good training when he was broke. Really nice horse. Wonder why he was turned out so long? Glad you brought him back to being a really nice horse.

You were a good horseman back then and you still are today. Those first rides go really well with these new methods. But I have found that somewhere along the third or fourth ride is when they usually see if can ride a bronc. Apparently I am skipping some steps. Keep those videos coming.

Thanks Mel, that horse did go well. I tried to buy him but they wouldn’t sell, but I did get a foal that was sired by him and still have him 20yrs on 👍🏼

One must keep in mind though, Stallion, Gelding or Mare that you are first starting, No horse responds to the same training. What works on one horse may not work on another. There is no "Cookie Cutter" method in training. Each horse learns differently. Just like a human child does. Each animal is an "INDIVIDUAL", and the training program should be uniquely designed for each animal. Yes, Personal Space and a lot of other things can be taught from the ground in preparing that particular horse to be backed and then saddled. And if done correctly, you won't have an issue. But to say that "THIS TECHNIQUE WORKS ON ALL HORSES", Imo, is incorrect. They are sentient beings and all learn at different rates. Just my opinion after 50+ years delivering foals, having injured horses come to me for rehabilitation, and backing the foals I've delivered when they become of age. I refuse to put weight on the back of a 2 year old, but I will take them back when they are 4. The owner also has a responsibility here to do some of the ground work for personal space, feet handling so the farrier can work safely and many other things. And I will advise them as needed. Stay Safe Everyone! From a Retired Paramedic, in Ontario, Canada, Jenn. 💖 💖 🇨🇦 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟

:P wasnt "broke", but wasnt "unbroke" either. Caught the, "first time he's been mounted from this side." I was looking for some action by the video heading, but it was apparently a lil deceiving. Nothing wrong with yur method...until it is. And...really good job on the photo shop pic, unless that was the unseen round 2.

@@QuantumSavvyHorsemanship I’ve got this 14 year old gelding who was used as a lesson horse and is quiet in the ring. Problem is, we’re trail riders and he’s timid out on the trails. He needs more confidence in me/the rider. Is there ground work I can do to help build his confidence in me and himself?

Can I ask how do I get a my horse to counter do I go slow on the counter with my horse thank you Nannette
@QuantumSavvyHorsemanship
@QuantumSavvyHorsemanship 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Naunette, there can be a few ways to get the canter but in this video, I am establishing comfort stopping spots at each end of the arena and I will use these to encourage the horse in canter once I have the saddle on. Using stopping spots gets the horse wanting to go to the spot for a rest and relax. On very braced horses that I don't trust I do this on a long line until they are relaxed enough to ride. Leading from another horse is an option also. Hope this helps and thank you for visiting my channel. Shane

Yes, I have had that comment before, some even thinking he had been ridden before he was put out in the bush as 1 year old. I wish had videoed the day before when I halter trained him and he took off like a fish on the end of a line, he wasn't so friendly in the beginning but it doesn't really mater what people believe, the video shows the steps that I have used with hundreds of horses and it works nice and that is what I wanted to show, I do use more of a pattern now but still the same principals. He does look great I agree. I purchased the first foal from him and he is still with me today and he has been my best friend for 20 years.
