This is a very simple, two-part instructional video on how NOT to drag race your stick shift car. The key here is to coordinate your left leg with your right arm to perform a shifting sequence together. The end goal is to quickly and effectively gets your car into the next gear without damaging your transmission.
Note: No engines were severely damaged in the making of this video. The only damage was to the drivers ego, which was in need of humbling.

Racing with a manual (stick shift) is the proper way to go. It 's all about coordination clutch, gear selector, throttle and shifting at optimum rev limit per gear.....if you can't do it then go back to school and learn to drive

@@Brad355 It allows your hand and muscles to swivel on the stick to best meet up with the linkage and gears. Heavy equipment operators use them every day, all day long. I have been driving stick shift since the early 80s. My Hurst shifter set up right only needed me to push back and forth, the springs did the rest. The ball allowed the action to happen in spite of my lateral inputs. I always wondered what a "T" knob would do but never tried one until I drove a 69 GTO with a Z gate vertical shifter. I learned from that one that getting your stops and linkages setup properly was imperitave, and it worked good in that case once it was there. For my own cars I just kept the ball. It never failed me at the dragstrip or on the road. Keep up the fine tuning, manuals are really cool and fun to drive!

I had a 3 sod manual on a 6 cylinder ford Falcon and won’t class N/S. Blew the bearings out on missed 2-3 shits. I’d been driving sticks since I was 14. I had a hurst shifter with brass bushings. I can only blame some thing in that trans that did not want to move as fast as hurst and me wanted to. I rebuilt the motor, bearings were so bad I needed to find another crank at Bezeski Brothers. A few months later just doing a semi quick shift the input shaft sheared. I was engineering school. I saved the the busted part. It was a classic torsional shear failure. Not fatigue, not crack induced, just could not handle the load. Ford had put a trans in the car that could not handle 100 ft-lbs of torque. That was the rating in the vehicle specs and that was the base engine. Years later I inherited a Mustang with the same basic engine but twice the horsepower and it too would not like to “hurry up” the 2-3” shift even if I double clutched it. It pucked 1st gear after about 60,000 miles. No synchros. My double clutching leaved a little to be desired. The profit Ford made on those stripper cars in the 60s and 70s must have been phenomenal. They didn’t have near the durability of a decent car of today. No car could make 100,000 without 3 brake jobs, fords needed cylinders rebuilt each time, 2 clutches, 1 radiator, 3 or 4 sets of tires, 6 head lights, 10 misc bulbs, heater core. If you were lucky and had a SBC or the old big block FORD 6 cylinder they could make 100,000. I forgot ball joints, 1 or 2 sets (only one if you greased them every Tuesday), tie rod ends (see ball joints), u-joints, …what did I miss, oh wheel alignment after every spring thaw and pot season. Muffler systems, 2 or 3 in the rust belt states. If you lived in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan you only needed one and could run open exhaust after that to scare the deer, bear and moose of the road and ice.

I think his technique is pretty good, he's really cutting it close. The only reason we're seeing this is because he missed his 2-3 shift (which is the hardest one, takes a fraction of a second longer); it may be an adjustment problem on his shifter but it's going to happen sooner or later anyway since it's just simply hard to do.

A lot of people blame the shifter or the trans when having problems shifting. I've found that if you do not have a torque bar mounted from the engine to the frame (with OEM motor mounts) that the engine twists & causes the clutch linkage to not function (release) properly. Actually shortens the amount of clutch movement causing the trans to bind under load. This pertains to a vehicle with mechanical clutch linkages, not hydraulics. I stay strictly with a T-Handle shifter, full palm engagement.

@@davidkeeton6716 Hi David, thanks for the question. You pre load the shifter by pulling down on it, applying pressure in the direction of the shift. The moment you slam the clutch the stored energy into the pre load slams the shifter into gear. Two things noticed in the video. #1, he kept missing 3rd gear, which I would venture the guess that 3rd is the most commonly missed gear. Crossing the "H" is always a pain. #2, shifting any direction other than straight up or back with a "T" handle shifter is always difficult, a ball or the old Mopar pistol grip shifters always provide a more natural position, for manipulating the shifter across the patern. The only time I have seen a "T" handle be effective is when "Flat" shifting or in a gearbox with heavier internals that needed to be muscled into gear.

No coordination really needed, you can pull as hard as you want on the stick when under full load and you are not pulling it out of gear, stab the clutch and never let off the gas... it will shift lightning quick without the front end dropping.

@@davidkeeton6716 yep. Think of driving down a road next to a fence, and you want to throw a ball through it. The slower you drive, the easier it is to throw the ball between the posts. The faster, the more chance you’ll have of hitting one of the posts. Now take that and think of speed as engine rpm, and the vertical fence posts as syncros. Remove some of the posts, easier to get the ball between.

That bar shifter is a hindrance and should be changed to a gear knob. American driver's are so lazy and to used to automatic gearboxes and say that sticks are so hard to get used to where as it's the complete opposite here in the UK where automatic cars are not so popular.
