Hey, I also got this kit for Christmas, (2015). Of course I spent two weeks building mine, with plenty of measuring, sanding, etc... As my first (and only) Ukulele, I'm loving it! I'm actually afraid to play a really good Uke, for fear that I'll fall in love with a $300 one. For now, my $40 kit will do just fine. Stick to the music tutorials! Yours are great!

Lay your bridge back in place, measuring carefully to ascertain the correct location. Trace lightly around it with a brand new, shiny single edge razor blade a couple of times, lift the bridge off, mask around its location with your masking tape, apply a little paint stripping compound, let it sit for a little while, then scrape off the paint with your single edge razor, down to bare wood (as much as possible). Wipe off the paint and stripping compound, peel off the masking tape, and set it aside for two or three days. While you're at it, use your single edge razor to scrap the old glue from the underside of the bridge. Try gluing the bridge on again, using yellow wood glue and let it cure for at least three days (a full week would be far better) before attempting to string the instrument. Enjoyed the video. :)

That is an awesome reply (and one I've somehow only just seen!) full of great advice... though I promise you, I still would not be able to carry out about 90% of it! @PkGam8 жыл бұрын
This was a lot more humorous than I thought it would be! XD Especially when the bridge came off at the end after going through the trouble of tuning it. It's not unfixable though if you want to have another go at it. To realign the fretboard, you could likely pry it up with a flat-head screwdriver carefully (somewhere that you can't tell where marks would be if you chip the edge by mistake prying it up) and to glue down the bridge you'll definitely have to sand off the glue and paint where it goes so the glue adheres properly (Wood glue won't stick well to paint, as you seen, lol) as well as on the back of the pieces. Then after, just tape off the bridge like you did when you made the lines and re-paint it. BUT.... only do this stuff once it's dry. Function before form, basically. Also, follow the directions more carefully, ha ha! Worst' DIY experience I had was trying to build a gingerbread train from a kit. The thing would not stay together and the frosting would not stick. I looked into it and apparently it's a known issue they had with that particular kit, thus being essentially defective. XD So it was a lost cause before I even started on it and I didn't know it. Really messy too because while the frosting would not make for a good glue, it sure was gooey enough to stick to me and the table when it fell apart on it's own.

I made that same ukulele kit and to hold the bridge down we're two screws so I didn't even use glue on that. And the strings were the hardest thing to tell which to put we're but if u look closely they are different. But u did good for the first time trying to build one. I after making mine want to get a tenor ukulele for the size difference espically for me having big fingers

Yes, I did see there was one on their website that had screws... but it said you'd need a drill (which I don't have) so I went for this one. Well, glad you had more luck with it than me!

The Ukulele Teacher And You need to glue bridge before paintig... I think so...
@Amjust00211 жыл бұрын
***** Definitely. when you glued the bridge onto the uke, you actually put the adhesive on the paint and not the wood. So, more than likely it took some paint off with it. which simply means you did it wrong. Also, you don't NEED a drill for a drill job. you just need a screw, some elbow grease, and patience. I'd probably buy the screw on because why not? It was a good effort! I can't wait to buy mine :)

I got one of these. You were lucky that you got instructions. Also my neck construction was held in place by a dowel. A dovetail like what you got would have made the whole thing better. The neck was not flat enough to have the fretboard stick properly and the nut that I did give plenty of space for still never sat flat. My advice to people thinking this is a good idea just buy one from musician's friend or guitar center. You can buy a very good starter uke for 40 bucks. The same as it costs to build one. I wanted to make a nice custom uke for my daughter. She loves it but doesn't know how to play it. And she will never learn on this as it will never stay in tune.

I was surprised when the bridge pulled off. I thought the first string you put on would rip it off the paint. Measure from the nut to the 12th fret, repeat that measurement to the bridge, then scrape all the paint off where the bridge will go and glue it down again. Put some heavy weights on it to squeeze out the excess glue and you should have a playable ukulele with an ugly paint job. Although I've had tailpieces that needed pins drilled through the face to reinforce the joint.

hey guys! I paint ukes and other instruments for fun. In the sense of the DIY, glue your bridge first but not your fret board. The bridge came off because he used wood glue AFTER painting. Wood glue is not going to stick to gloss paint. If you glue the bridge, then mask off the bridge, then paint, let dry then build, you wont get paint all over the fret plus your bridge will actually stick! Ive always thought about starting a youtube channel doing DIY instruments...
