The only time i have absolute tolerance is with machinery(lathes, grinders, mills and such) as i love them, and i know that the error can only be mine, as the machine is near perfect and does only what you make it do... But shit that you set up perfectly, only for it to be tipped over by a fucking microgram of dust landing on the outermost corner and such shit, crap rolling off the perfectly smooth and flat surfaces that are as level as they can be just due to black fucking magic can drive me up the wall just as well... Or electronics that should have absolutely no problems just making shit up and crashing, well, crashing until the whole device suddenly crashes repeatedly into a nearest wall or a sledge/hammer at high velocity due to me losing my shit... Its what got me to stop using cellphones... You buy them, a year later you have a brick that has to be charging 18 hours a day to work for 2... Well, the last 5 phones did at least, until each was either smashed by a piece of heavy metal, driven over and had a burnout done on the screen or literally broken apart by bare hands and infernal rage... And they say that iphone has a metal shell to make it more durable... yeah right, not durable enough to withstand a pissed off machinist...

"oh here's a nice running/driving/stopping car for 1500, might as well repair the rust on it, okay I replaced half the body in New metal, might as well make it pretty, okay 5 gallons of filler later, it looks good! Might as well get the premium paint, well it's driving now, that's fun. Oops didn't buy a new radiator, now the engine is shot. Welp might as well get a bigger, newer engine in there! And a transmission for highway speeds.... That will need a custom drive shaft so might as well get a new rear end. Welp now the back is disc and the front is drum brakes... Might as well get a disc conversion kit for the front. Oops, now I need new wheels and tires since it's a different lug pattern. Fuck me I just can't stop. Next up is building a brandy new sporty engine to replace the used one I threw in when it eventually goes (hopefully long enough away to give me time to save up!)

You know why I like this series, and why I think a lot of other people do too? It’s because you don’t hide your mistakes. Instead of making it look like “there was no issues and this went perfect first time every time”, you show us the problems and how you fix them. I disagree, it is interesting, but as far as most interesting.............What I really enjoy, is watching a young man learn and grow as he progresses through his first major vehicle project. THAT is the truly interesting part. We make mistakes, so we can learn from them and do better next time. His next project will be leaps and bounds better than this one, and one day he will be ready for a full on ground up restoration. One day, I hope to see those videos.

I hope you NEVER do a full restoration later. I hope you keep this Fiero exactly like it is when you get done. Every panel that you look at 5 years from now, will be a memory that will make you smile. Every corner that got chipped that you fixed will make you laugh because you exploded at your whits end. You will see those small paint spots on the sunroof opening when you open it and the clear coat imperfections and think "why didn't I fix that". But you know what??? All of us lucky enough to see it in person won't see any of it. All we will see is how amazing it is that you not only did it, but how incredible it looks. Those flaws are little pieces of you... leave them... they are part of the history of the car, just like you are.

T Clay is correct. At a future point in his life, the car will be worth more just as it is; a sentimental “point and time” as a life reminder thing. Beyond that, there will likely come a point in life when current projects, time, obligations, expenses, life experience, and just getting older will make you far less the perfectionist. As long as you take care of it (I am sure you will), you’ll grow to accept and enjoy it for what it is and what it has been for you through the years. As a 48 year old owner of a ‘63 Studebaker of nearly 30 years, I can attest. As time passes, there becomes an odd mix of loving the car but also taking it for granted. You don’t want to part with it but a new project is always more pressing or exciting. The car get put on “the back burner”, months turn into years, years into decades! Time is sort of cruel that way but, in the end, you’ll just be glad and grateful that you were able to hang onto it, keep it running and driving, and enjoy using it when time allows. Just get it done to the best of your ability (which ain’t too shabby, btw) and make some memories with it!

I never owned a Fiero, but I do have a fond memory of it. I started LSU in the fall of 1989 and a friend of mine had a brand new Fiero 2M4, albeit in white. The first or second day in the dorm, she picked me up and let me drive her car. So there we are on I-10, just kind of plodding along at 55mph, when a whole sheet of gypsum board came flying off of the truck that was hauling a while load of them in front of us. I mean, imagine this 4x8 sheet spinning gracefully through the air and making a beeline for the windshield. It happened so quick and the sheet hit flat across the windshield and broke into a million pieces. Thankfully, I didn't run off the road and even more miraculously, there was no obvious damage to the car. For that reason, I will always have a find memory of that little thing.

When I was your age , I practiced painting friends junk cars for cheap. Even if it wasn’t perfect they were happy and I got to learn and practice a lot . That was way before the internet existed . KZbin can only teach you so much . One important thing , you need tons of good lighting when painting .

Practicing on other people's junk is a great idea: I do that with welding, I don't charge anything and I always thanks them for letting me practice on their crap. You can't really get better at some work unless there are consequences to your mistakes; it is nice when the consequences are on someone eles's junk, yet they are still grateful it is fixed and not likely to break again in that same spot. Installing a transmission cooler inline between the compressor head and tank will dramatically drop temps from 200'+F to 70'F. That cool air helps keeps moisture problems away. KZbin search "compressor aftercooler".

I’m really glad you are not done making videos about the little Fiero you saved and helped rise like a Phoenix. I’m also glad you’re happy with her. You should be and happy with yourself. You’ve come a long way on this journey. In some ways the progress of the car is analogous to your progress as a person, and is just as impressive as the car. As a car guy, I feel your pain with the panel falling, and your discouragement at the orange peel on the paint. I worked at a body shop in my teen years and I can tell you with a reasonable degree of confidence, that those guys had years of experience, and they STILL made mistakes, runs in paint, runs in clear, bad bondo mix, it happens. In all honesty I think you're doing quite well for your first try. Be patient with yourself, fix the mistakes, and learn. Start from where you are, not where you want to be. Keep up the good work.

The hardest part of any project is to stop nit-picking yourself and just see it to the end. I think you've quickly realized the more you do it the better you'll get. Then one day you can revisit it, and do it better with more experience, or maybe you'll just learn to forever appreciate it with the mistakes that only you will know about. It is a piece of art showing your craftsmanship! Keep up the amazing work!

As an autobody apprentice, i can confidently say that finish work is by far the most difficult to get a "feel" for. This is also coming from someone who used to work as a finish tech in carpentry, so i knew my way around a spray booth. Wrenching and panel repair is straightforward, even if things like bondo or fibreglass have a bit of a time limit, it's still pretty easy to make a plan and stick to it. With finishing, you really have to do your absolute best to plan ahead, make sure the timing is right, make sure your technique is right, and pray nothing unexpected happens.
