I'm brand new to the Lathe and try my hand at a lidded box. See all my mistakes and bad habits as I make them. I'll get better for sure but we've all got to start somewhere.

Ok, so new wood like you used can contain 20% - 30% moisture. As the wood dries it does shrink, which is what I think happened to the lip that the lid sat on. The lip was a smaller diameter than the rest of the bowl, therefore had less wood, therefore dried faster than the rest of the bowl. So it shrunk faster than the lid as well as the bowl. You can work on new wood and still have the project work out, however it will take extra time compared to a fully dried piece of wood. 1. turn the basic shape of your project, but make sure to leave it thicker than the finished product. 2. Weigh the wood, as wood dries it will lose weight 3. Put the wood in the microwave for 20 - 30 seconds 4. Take it out and let it cool and dry, then weigh it again. 5. turn the project again and take off more wood. 6. rinse and repeat until the wood stops losing weight, then finish it up. The reason you want to keep the project thicker is because as you microwave it there's a good chance the wood will warp. You need to leave enough thickness so you can correct the shape. Hope this helps.

Fun! I don't know a thing about lathes so it's nice to watch your vids. I wonder if the thinnest layer of felt for the lid would make for a comfy fit.

noob or not i think it's a pretty bowl. You could consider putting some very very very thin fabric or felt or leather on the inside of the lid or on the outer rim of the bowl to make the lid tighter i think. Good job!

Thanks Stitch. Felt or something is an awesome idea !! I'd still like to find the culprit though or a way to dry the wood out. Might throw it in a low oven for a bit before I start next time

loving the video's :) just wondering, with the heat from the produced while lathing, does that have any extra effect with the wood expanding and then contracting when it gets cold again or is it negligible?
