Being from the bay area, that 11 mile difference is actually +1 hour drive with traffic and city driving. And leaving the game early has nothing to do with loyalty ... and has all to do with traffic and being stuck in the city for 2 hours.

Don't kid yourselves, Oakland wouldn't put up a dime to fix Oracle or support the surrounding neighborhood. GSW left, Raiders left and the A's just develop great players to get big contracts somewhere else. The people of Oakland support their teams, the town of Oakland has not.

Actually Warriors and Raiders still owe the CIty of Oakland and the Alameda coliseum authority a lot of money for the remodel of both buildings that was never paid in full. One important misconception in this vid is that the the fan base changed once the warriors moved. This is simply false - 70% of season tix holders from oracle bought their seats for chase. The demographics are actually the same. People leave chase earlier because parking and public transportation are more crowded in San Francisco. The notion that more Oakland residents went to warriors games when in Oakland has no factual basis. They’ve always been a Bay Area team.

Didn't the 49ers mover further away? as someone who doesn't live in that area I always thought the reaction to the "move" was exaggerated. Shit, if the New York Jets and Giants play in New Jersey, I dont think the warriors moving 11 miles is worth this level of discussion.

I miss going to games at Oracle. The fans in Oakland were diehard and faithful. Oracle had been selling out consistently since way before the Warriors became a legacy team
@ldfreitas9437
@ldfreitas9437 2 жыл бұрын
Well, now they are selling out at Chase, and it's a way nicer venue and also in a way safer place. I saw the Warriors in the late 60s play at the Cow Palace. Old type arena, had hockey and basketball, rodeos, circuses, concerts. It could have been the Fenway Park or Wrigley Field of the NBA by now had the Warriors continued to at least play a handful of games there all these years.
@1970rsc
@1970rsc 2 жыл бұрын
@@ldfreitas9437 Folks who are still nostalgic about Oracle haven't been to Chase yet. Anyone who has gone to a game knows what an improvement the move has been, particularly the safety issue you raised. Oracle was in the WORST neighborhood of Oakland right on the corner of Murder street and Rapist alley. On the other hand, the main San Francisco police station is 1-2 blocks from Chase, so there is very little neighborhood crime.
@LeimertDreamer
@LeimertDreamer 13 күн бұрын
Dude you’re over exaggerating. I’ve been to several games at the Chase Center and was actually underwhelmed when I first went there. It is nice, but newer arenas like the new Clippers Arena will probably be much more state of the art. And the Oakland Arena was not “on the corner” of anything. It’s isolated from the surrounding neighborhoods by the BART station and the long pedestrian bridge on one side, and the 880 freeway on the other. Now if you wanna talk about a stadium that was ABSOLUTELY in the hood and directly across the street from one of the worst areas in SF, there’s Candlestick Park. THAT stadium was literally in the hood.

One item you left out of your history of the team was that for a season in the early 70's the Warriors played eleven "home" games in San Diego, apparently gauging fan interest for a move south. Also, when the current ownership group bought the team San Francisco was immediately sought as a new home site. Plans for one of the piers to be developed were seriously pursued but neighborhood opposition prevented that project. The Warriors have been and will continue to be the Bay Area's team. Of course "money" and "business" enter into it. Pro sports is a very serious business. Maximizing revenue is key in being able to operate a team. Salaries for players and staff have to be paid and teams are looking to improve the "fan experience" all the time. I'm sure there were some east bay folks who didn't want to make the cross-bay trip anymore but the team at least is still in the region. It's not like the Raiders (and possible A's) situation where they left for Las Vegas. The Bay Area still has the Warriors and will have them for many years to come.

The Warriors move to San Francisco has sucked the loudness out of the crowd. It's such a different crowd, less diversity, it's like a wake up to gentrification at its finest unfortunately. Like Roaracle Arena games in Oakland were beyond epic and legendary, fun as hell and lively as can be! But in SF it's all these billionaires and CEO's that could give 2 craps about the Warriors when not on winning streaks(mainly there for the luxuries). It's a heartbreak but I'll still visit the Dubs in SF when Covid 19 #'s go down. In the mean time, the no fans thing is an advantage to the Warriors players/coaches before the weak 2020 gentrified/watered-down SF crowd brings the half-assed energy. Regardless, Oakland or SF, Dubs til' death!

I remember going to games at Oracle in Oakland and seeing every kind of human being on planet earth represented in the crowds and loving being a part of a real, SHARED experience. Every religious and non-religious background represented, every ethnicity and combination of ethnicities represented, every gender orientation represented. All sharing an experience. Chase is a great arena, but I’ve only been able to go once so far, and the people that I have seen who go there are mostly European descent, and I miss seeing people of Middle Eastern descent, or Hispanic, or Pacific Islanders, or Asian or African descent at the event, being part of something with me and I with them. Yes Chase still has some people representing most groups, but the numbers just aren’t the same, and that’s a loss that we all saw coming, and if you didn’t, you weren’t really thinking things through. As great a place as Chase is, it didn’t sustain the one thing that really makes the Bay Area special, all of it’s people living together

I think once fans are allowed at Chase again, the Warriors have their full roster and fans will know the right public transportation to take to get to and out of Chase (a lot of people complained about that as well, even though there are more public transportation options to get to Chase, as opposed to Oracle where you really just had BART), Chase will rock like Oracle did. But yes, overall I like the move. Yeah, it was a business move, but arguably it was move that needed to happen and it made sense. Oracle was getting older, and who knows how much longer the Warriors would've been able to keep playing there as it was already one of the older arenas in the NBA. Even Adam Silver admitted during one of the Warriors Finals appearances that the Warriors needed a new arena, which kind of further justified the Warriors decision move to SF. Also, if the Warriors would've stayed at Oracle, who knows if the Warriors would've eventually had to deal with the issues the A's and Raiders dealt with in Oakland for many years, and for the A's they are still dealing with regarding trying to get a new stadium built there. But yes, not to bash Oracle, Oracle was great and the Warriors had a great thing there and they ended their tenure at Oracle and Oakland with a bang winning 3 NBA titles in 5 seasons, but it will be cool to see what they can do at Chase, and make new memories at Chase and in SF! It's almost like a new chapter in Warriors franchise history!

As an Oakland fan I'm sad, but I don't take the move personally. The Warriors fan base is spread throughout the Bay, so I don't blame them for chasing the most lucrative of those fans. I'm far more upset about the Raiders (who screwed over Oakland taxpayers for Mt. Davis) and the A's (almost doubling their ticket & parking prices while trading away fan favorites and openly flirting with Las Vegas).

This is all wrong. Raiders left because Vegas financed a new stadium and Oakland could not afford to build Davis a new stadium. The Warriors left because they built their own stadium that they now own (Chase) so they don't have to rent Oracle from the City of Oakland anymore. Now they own their own $2BB stadium. The A's are leaving because of a new stadium as well. They want to build one on the waterfront, but it looks like that's not going to happen for whatever reason. Looks like the A's might be going to vegas.

The teams are special, but the venues in which they play are not. Both the coliseum and stadium are old, uncomfortable, lack good amenities and need to be torn down and build better housing in the area. The last thing Oakland needs is to finance a new stadium for a sports team. they need to spend the little money they have on more cops, more housing, more homeless programs, more street/grafitti clean ups and more drug programs. The city is literally falling apart, and basketball and baseball are not the answers.

They once shut down a charter school that was focusing on quality education for kids who made an effort, it had a graduation rate of over 80% and 40% going to college. The city of Oakland shut it down, because "It wasn't fair" but really it was making the other school look bad.

yeah but your city would flourish with the money these teams that are leaving brought yet they would never fix the communities around, as much as these pro teams brought revenue to the cities as well as donating. Leaving a game to go get food and having half of the restaurants or franchises be drive thru only with 20 cop cars and coroners and ambulances on standby for shootings is not a look you want being a legendary franchise. All the sports teams were patient with the city of Oakland but your city councelmen let y'all down. I dont really understand the "Priced out" argument. I feel like ticket pricing is more indicative of the teams success rather than the new stadium. Though the tickets to Chase center games are a bit higher than the games at oracle the few seasons before, the tickets to watch the dubs at oracle were still pretty expensive. Especially towards the last few years of their run with KD. I think people are more-so missing the ticket prices from the 2000s-early 2010s. Personally my main gripe is the commute coming from the East Bay. I understand parking is more limited at Chase center, but theres definitely ways to get around that. Like, if you're willing to walk a few blocks, there's ways to find parking for free. Parking at Oracle was expensive too, so I'd always park in the lots/neighborhood around the bart station and walk in from there so I'm no stranger to walking a bit to get to games. If you not tryna walk a few blocks, take bart and muni. Muni will basically drop you off right in front of the arena and the cost of it plus bart will basically offset bridge tolls and gas. Idk I'm rambling, but I just really get the common narrative/arguements.

The vast majority of the games the Warriors played between 1962 and 1966 were in San Francisco. In fact, all the 1965-66 season the home games were at the San Francisco Civic Auditorium, not the Cow Palace. They had a few games now and then at the San Jose Civic and Oakland Civic between 1962 and 1965, even at the University of San Francisco gym. Most of the games were at the Cow Palace overall until 1971, and half the games were at the Cow Palace between 1966 and 1971. Same goes for the GSW franchise, in able to be the best NBA team(business) in the league they have to make it the best and that's SF plain and simple... This movie was about social environment, not money. I like the guy that created this video though because he was honest and saying that it isn’t clear if they’re really making more money, which I believe they aren’t. I’ve worked in transportation for over two decades the Silicon Valley/San Francisco fan base aren’t from here they grew up rooting for different teams and they rather stay home in their $2 million condo and watch the game than spend $500 bucks on a ticket ( I’ve been told that multiple times; I’m not spending that). The Warriors actually have a $25 ticket List during the season “ Google it if you don’t believe me” The last 7 to 10 years you could never get an oracle for $25 not even in the nose bleeds. Once again this was about social environment not money.

Actually the complex was owned by both Oakland and the county of Alameda. If the Warriors don’t build and own their own arena, they don’t get the increased value and cash flow. They are currently 147 million in luxury taxes this year alone (above the actual salaries) no way can they afford to keep Steph, Klay, Dray, Wiggs being content as a renter in Oakland

This may have to do with the same reason the Raiders left, and the state of California didn't want to lose the championship team when they just wants the Raiders to Los Vegas. The fact is at Oracle Arena was part of the oakland-alameda sports complex which was all built in 1962, which makes the arena out of date compared to today's standards seeing the fact that most NBA arenas are much larger than what they were back in 1960, and have far more box seats. Plus I don't think the fan base is much different, because and 11 miles difference would have been well within their fan market, meaning a great view of Warriors fans are from San Francisco. Also most teams don't compete for hardcore fans they compete for sales within a given market which can spend anywhere from a single city to several US states. TV contracts are what teams care about the most, and how much money they can make off the market. Doesn't matter how long since they became so long as the team is making money. This is why shity NFL teams that win 2 a year like the Browns can stay in the same city for years, because people still watch the Browns and buy their merchandise even with year of losing, and the Browns will still never leave Cleveland.

I think its just a disgusting business move that freezes out the real Warriors fans. Something could have been done in Oakland. Not to mention you have many arena workers in Oakland that are now either out of work or have to commute across the bay to get to games. Foolishness. There is more than enough money in the Bay area for the team to stay and prosper in Oakland. Its not the 1990s anymore.

It’s definitely not “hardcore fans issue” I’m from Oakland and I’ve been a fan of the warriors since the 04 season I was lucky enough to go to many regular season games playoffs games finals tailgates etc at oracle,I was lucky enough to go to some games over here at the chase center,now let me tell you something “11 miles” may not seem much but in reality getting out that place is light traveling from the earth to the moon because there’s so much traffic in that small area,trust me I’d love to stay but damn if I’m sitting in traffic for 2hrs when I can listen to the game on SirusXM on the way home. Chase center is nice as I got to roam around for a bit but the energy isn’t as tuff as roaracle it wasn’t as loud and there are a lot of new warriors fans who are kids just sitting on there phones so it will never match up to those old days at the oracle palace

Reading the comments one thing is clear, people don't think 'rationally' and act 'emotionally'. When you run a multi-billion dollar franchise, you can't think 'emotionally'. The Warriors have 3 max players. From this season (21'-22') alone, they have another max player in Poole and a potential max contract in Kuminga (and maybe Wiseman). To add to all of that, they need to pay luxury tax AND account for state tax. A billion dollar franchise doesn't mean you get every peny of the billion dollars in hand. The Warriors need money if they want to keep up with the likes of LA, NY and Boston. Like Shaq once said about his first paycheck, he bought a 500K Merc for his parents and then spent the rest on himself till he was told by his agent that he was broke and could not afford it because the million dollars salary meant a good portion of it goes for taxes so he wasn't truly a millionaire.
