If you do a comparison between the last 3-4 generations of android phones of any brand you’d see pretty much the same trend. It’s not an apple thing, it’s a tech thing. There’s not a lot of room for massive improvements that are noticeable and companies need to make money. Changes would be even more incremental in the future
@Destruction522 ай бұрын
I really think that brands just play with features and stuff to deliver a new generation but not take a huge step forward, they need to make money

I am past 5 year mark with my S8 and I don't find any reason to replace it. I bought it when S9 was out already. Now I am just wondering when will be the time to upgrade - 7 years? 10 years????

I usually upgrade until my iPhone stops getting software updates; iOS 18, 19, etc. I’m rocking a 15 PM 512GB, so I’ll be fine for a long time.
@NickDrinksWater2 ай бұрын
Most people shouldn't bother upgrading until their current one breaks or doesn't receive OS updates anymore, there's hardly ever any real differences from one phone to the next nowadays

The only things that I wish I had from the new iPhones compared to my 12 Pro Max are: - 120Hz screen - 48MP camera - 5x optical zoom - USB-C (because I still backup my phone to iTunes and the USB-3 speeds would make it so much faster)
@hobosnake12 ай бұрын
Those are pretty much the only upgrades from the 12 pro max that I would care about. I don't even have an iPhone, but I say run that 12 into the ground if you're value minded. It's still a very serviceable phone. Although if you upgrade I can't blame you either. Definitely wait for the 16 pro max. It actually seems like a big upgrade. Especially if it's true that they're adjusting the battery to perform better.

I feel like we’re at a point in time where there really aren’t any massive updates in terms of tech and as a result any updates you see for phones are super incremental across the board. The Galaxy S24 series has gotten good reviews but many have noted that aside from the added functionality with AI the S24 lineup is not that different from the S22 and S23. And the same could very well be said here for Apple because the iPhone 13-15 are all fairly similar aside from battery and camera. Many of the huge leaps and bounds with tech that we saw in the late 2000s and throughout the 2010s are a thing of the past. And with phones lasting longer these days you can get away with holding your phone for 3-5 years, maybe longer as long as you don’t beat it into the ground.

My first iPhone was the 11 Pro Max. I've upgraded every year until this year. I finally decided I was a knucklehead for doing so. My 13 Pro was an excellent phone but I missed the larger screen. So, I got the 14 Pro Max. There were a few times early on where I had some regrets but I've moved past that. I really like this phone. Like many others, I don't need to upgrade every year and I decided to stop. The 15 Pro Max has some camera features I'd like to have but I don't NEED them. I don't care about USB-c and the phone is plenty fast. Also, I don't even use all the capabilities of this thing. Nice video. Glad I came across it.
@KianTechReviews2 ай бұрын
Thank you for the comment. Why did you have regrets with the 14 Pro Max? Also if you don't have a popsocket I would highly recommend to reach the corner edges. This is why I regretted my 13 Pro Max for a while :)
@billiamnotbob2 ай бұрын
@@KianTechReviews Part of it is the weight difference. I have large hands so 'reachability' isn't an issue. The thing is heavy and I keep my phone in my shirt pocket. Also, I always use a case and my favorite case, the Defender Pro adds more size to it. I never was a fan of pop-sockets. When I boil it down, the 13 Pro was darn near perfect. Rumor has it that the 16 Pro may be going to 6.3" for screen size and they may bring the 5X zook to it. That might be enough to get me to upgrade. I found the 6.5 of the 11 Pro Max to be 'just right'. If my eyes were better, I'd use a 13 mini! LOL But that lacked ram.

My first iPhone was a 7+. That thing was a matte black tank. I just came from a Galaxy phone, so the learning curve, you know. Upgraded to a 11PM; again another tank. Got the 15PM 512GB now, and I’m keeping it until the OS updates are no longer available.

In general, there's been no real need to upgrade ANY smartphone (Apple, Android) in the last several years/generations. All improvements have been incremental and none have been groundbreaking. I don't expect anything groundbreaking in the iPhone 16, either. Generative AI, if it's introduced, should be largely available for iPhone 13, 14, and 15, as well. Capture button? Who gives a fuck? Most users won't be shooting spatial videos 'cuz most users won't be using Vision Pro. At least, not for many years.
@horridohobbies2 ай бұрын
Vision Pro, or its successors, won't likely take off as a mass market product until around 2030. Nobody wants to wear a heavy awkward headset; glasses are a much better form factor. The price point needs to drop to around $1,000. Practical utility of such a device needs to be proven and accepted by the public.

Right now I have the 14 pro max and the only way Apple could get me to buy a new iPhone is if they give the plus 120hz or give the pro max vibrant candy colors especially in 14 product red color

6 years is pretty good for upgrading, iphones aren't known for being any better each version for the average user, the removal of the Sim tray in the US was completely needed and a total other way to trap people into their ecosystem

Agree you don’t have to update but your wrong on the Dynamic Island, it’s awesome use it all day everyday. Do apps need to use it more? Yes. But it’s not for all apps, any apps that are actively doing something in the background but you need a little glimpse of it should be taking advantage. But directions and podcasts and music are enough for me to love it.

Fair enough. I just thought about how the touchbar on the macbook pro's was abandoned after not many third party apps really were using them.

Hey. You have a point that the phones aren't that different and there is no point in upgrading. BUT you're missing another huge factor that is making your whole point irrelevant. And that's a cost of ownership. This factor makes absolutely no sense to not to upgrade if you already have a previous model. Let's dismiss the obvious right off the bat - phones lose value over time and it's inevitable. I am talking about resale value. And if you do own ANY phone, you are already losing money. More expansive the prone more you lose. So, the trick is that if you bought a flagship phone last year, you've ALREADY lost the an amount that equals the difference between its original price and its current resale value. From here, you can go two paths. You can keep the old phone and continue losing money (even though losses decrease overtime), OR you can compensate the loss you suffered (the difference between the new one and the current value) and get a new one. Let's break both ways down. 1) First one is to keep the old phone. No matter what you do, it's resale value decreases over time and you can even keep it for 5-6 years, until it becomes worthless and this way you'd lose the whole amount of money. 2) Or the second path is to just compensate the difference between the last year flagship you've got on your hands and the new phone, and get a new phone. That money you'd need to compensate is the money you have already lost so you won't gain any money or something this way, BUT you still gain value doing that - you get a brand-new phone model with all its bells and whistles, fresh battery and what's most important, a new 1-year warranty. So, at the end, considering the cost of ownership, considering that you are planning to stick to the same tier of phone model (doesn't matter if it's a Pro Max, or just the usual one), you end up spending almost the same amount of money if stick to the same phone for 2-3 years VS you upgrade every year, while upgrading every year, you also gain new phone every year that has a fresh battery and a new warranty. This way it makes NO SENSE TO NOT to upgrade your iPhone every year. Also, the cost of ownership renders buying any android phone instead of iPhone pointless from the financial standpoint, since android phones lost WAAAAY more resale value over the same period of time and thus cost way more in the long run.
