How old are your tires? How to read tire manufacturing date codes

I bought my car in 2008 and it only has 60,000 Km on it, I replaced the tires, (they were in great condition) because they were 15 years old. The tires were a modern version of the tires I already on the car, it made a huge difference in the driving experience.

Old tires are dangerous if they are old. Even if they have full tread. Over 5yrs old they handle (braking and cornering) much worse than when new. I had fun and tested this out on the track. It’s amazing how their performance (and thus their safety) degrades when they get old.

Not so sure I agree with that. The tires I have tested on (they were older than 5yrs) were always garage kept and probably had a total of 1000 miles on them. They looked great, but they were hard as rocks and had zero traction. Would I take five-year-old tires and throw them away? No. But they’re closer to the end of their life than the beginning.

This is due to the new rubber compounds. You can't buy an air hose for a shop or tires or anything rubber that holds up to sunlight anymore. I was refused fixing a nail in my tire at discount tire just because the tires were over 5 years old and they are in perfect condition except for the nail that was in the center of the tire. It was a simple fix but they wouldn't do it.

Must have been a slow news day. If stored properly tires will last 10 years before they start to degrade. This is like freaking out that you bought a brand new 2023 vehicle but found our it was actually manufactured july 2022. Lol Buying a brand new coffee maker that's been sitting on the shelf for a year. Also took forever in 2020 for stock to get shipped with all the supply chain issues. Cars were mostly built and spent a year sitting waiting for chips. This while story is stupid.

Age is not a big problem for all-season tires that are not used in the winter, but just make sure they don't develop big cracks in the sidewalls. If cracks do develop, then it's time to get rid of them. As for winter tires; Anything older than 6 years and it's time to get new winter tires as the rubber gets too 'hard' and slippery when they get that old.
