Stanford Cardinal women's basketball is officially the first major domino to fall in the women's March Madness tournament of 2023. So, how did the 8th seeded Ole Miss defy the odds? I'll be breaking down the film to analyse how this upset went down.

Stanford had no guard play, forcing Brink and Jones to try to create offense all by themselves. Hard to win a game playing 2 on 5.

It's crazy how so many people considered Ol Miss victory over my Stanford girls an upset!( Ol Miss women's team ,is that team that no team looks forward to playing ). Teams can keep sleeping on Ol Miss if the want to....( they gonna get their feelings hurt ). It hurt to see my girls take that L ,but Ol Miss earned that victory .

the officiating was horrible, but once again it was on both sides. It’s like Stanford abandon their style of game! Not taking anything away from Ole Miss! They came to play and win!

Didn't watch the game, but just watching these clips, the refs allowed clear fouls on ball handlers and even Brink's first shot shown.

Now this was one of the most honest comments I've read about the game officiating well both sides love that being said it was Fair But I still say Stanford was overrated this season and when this happens the letdown is hard especially for the team

@@salvadorperez2450 what do you want to say ? I'm not a fan of either team I like UCON with that said I I've seen home court cooking being done by Stanford during the season which is why I said they were overrated even though both teams were getting beat up pretty good without calls that usually goes stanford's Way my earlier statement was just being nice about what I saw compared to the original comment I believe the refs gave both teams a chance to win

Like you've mentioned earlier Haley Jones was intimidated by Ole Miss's gritty D and Cameroon Brink was generally very very good. However, I also felt that the Stanford coaching strategy was very poor. There was no concerted effort/attempt made to spread the floor with their guards attempting 3's mixed in throughout the game.

I thought Stanford was overseeded by a bit, but only a slot or two. They'd have done better as a number 2, or even 3. To be fair, Stanford did shut down the interior shots. They were just unlucky they had to face a team capable of shooting the three ball. And hey: this is March. The ball bounces funny on you sometimes. Every team in the tourney is fighting for their lives in sudden death. We had four near upsets yesterday. I thought Mississippi State and Princeton both were going to go the distance. The favored team pulled it out in the end, but it was a near thing. Even Arizona could have won if the Terps had had a bad day. It could have been "smote forehead" day, but it wasn't. That's probably as good as it gets. I can't even imagine an NCAA tournament with no upsets :-) I do think the NCAA selection Committee ought to lose the "Power 5 or 6" bias. But that's another story. Also, like Geno, I think the smaller, one-bid conferences ought to kill the tournament until they do. But that too is another story.

Glad you are repeating what Geno said* a) it’s true & b) it shows how he analyzes & cares for the game as a whole *if anyone’s interested, see the end of his postgame conference after VT game round 1

I don’t know why Stanford was number one anyway. I believe it was because of the name.

Name and coach Tara' rep. but IMO this is the least skilled Stanford team in years, not surprised they lost to ole miss.

One of Tara VanDerveer's major strategy flaws this season was her shortsightedness to not run enough plays through Cameron Brink. There have been multiple possessions in more than a few games where she didn't even touch the ball. Brink being relegated to just frantically waving for the ball and not getting it after having posted up. I'm not saying that she has to/or should shoot the ball every possession (of course she is often left wide open for the mid range jumper around the Free Throw line), but at least 35% of the time they should run it through her to open other things up.

Stanford was too slow, Ole Miss was faster and more athletic all night. The matchup between the opposing guards was nonexistent. Stanford's guards were a non-factor

Lots of credit to Ole Miss and I’m so happy for Coach Yo. I think we’ve seen Stanford struggle the past 2 years without a true and mature PG like when Kianna Williams was there to help them win the Chip in 2021. Excited to see Stanford and Lepolo develop and also excited to see Ole Miss bright future

i feel like upsets in march madness like these are so underappreciated because ole miss upset stanford AT stanford which in my opinion makes it so much harder. i wish that the first and second round games were played at a neutral location cuz there would definitely be more upsets like this

In my opinion statistics and analytics can be over/under misinterpreted. At the end of the day you still play the game between the line strategy and tactically. SouthEast Conference competitions is the toughest.

The offense should have run through Brink the whole game. That's one of vanderveer's biggest problems. She gets away from that all to often.
