A few years ago I had a chat with someone high up in a certain manufacturer and I asked why are service intervals so high? One reason was to appeal to fleet users, more miles between services means money saved, and given these companies only keep them 3-4 years they don't care if its on its last legs when it goes. Another is that manufacturers want you to buy new every few years if cars lasted 200k and 20 years like they uses too then there will be less demand for new cars and shares will drop which isn't what the rich gits at the top want. And while I'm on a rant the manufacturer also likes it when your car is stolen, insurance pay out, you buy a new car more money for them less for us. P.s 5k services on my car with all filters lol. Keep these vids coming Baz👍👍

I agree Baz these oil service intervals are too long, I think max 12,000 on modern engines doing high mileages, but no more than 12 months even if you only do very low miles. Keep up the good work

Baz, I have the Qashqai in Baku, imported from the EU and assembled in the UK (R9M)... Indeed the same problems and no one can fix that "crock of shit" here. I had to change the pressure sensor but could not reach the pipes. Yeah, have cut some skin :) Now I have a clue what to remove and get an access, but I don't have that tool making pipe alive after induction heating.... Oh, my friend, you are helping a lot to the people who are dealing with the loved Nissans, failed during buying of a "good friend for life". And the fail with video recording and your efforts to show us that X-trail are gorgeous. Thank you, and be safe. Greetings from AZ.

Hi baz got a ford ranger south Africa plant manufactured, change engine oil/filter every 7,000/9,000miles what I now know about the new diesel engines would of tried to purchase a low mileage second hand one for my off road work but single cab's are very hard to find pre all the diesel immission systems the government made manufacturer's to add to the exhaust system & I only use my for rural transport no city driving, ford should have fitted them with a petrol engine choice as well, like there f150,250s in the states very limited choice in the UK on engine's in large load carrying 4x4 for of road work, and Toyota lead time's on single cab's were up to 20 months still last year in your own colour choices,so with my own truck and doing local miles just keep changing engine oil filter regularly as I was advised by a very exclusive car maker test driver/design consultant.

Back in the day (probably late 90's / early 2000's), I worked for a chap who also owned a garage that had a Renault dealership. He was complaining about just this issue; the stretching out of service intervals and the problems it caused. He said the only reason that Renault began this practise was customers moaning about either the frequency or cost of having their cars maintained. Renault just decided to give people (and fleet operators) what they were asking for; longer service intervals. We've been paying the price ever since, especially now that engines are waaaay more complex than they used to be. I'm 10k max on oil changes too; it's so easy and cheap to do. edit: I'd guessed 18Nm, not 8! That's finger tight.

In my entire 75 years on every vehicle I have used the following regime and it has paid dividends, I do not use the over hyped expensive oils but use cheaper (but not recycled very cheap) oils. Diesel and petrol cars normal use 6000 miles max, heavy use (i.e. 4x4) 4000 miles, motorcycles 2000 miles or 1000 miles high revving machines. I have machines whose engines are still pristine after 50 years, filters I change every time on cars and every other time on bikes.

I service my 06 Mondeo TDCI every 6k or less, my 05 Merc Sprinter every 10k and my 41 year old Honda motorbike twice a year regardless of whether it has covered 50 miles or a 1000. Car has covered 242k and drives faultless and the van has covered just shy of 100k. Cheaper than having to scrap or replace your engine. New vehicles are a nightmare and have been designed so the home mechanic can't do any jobs on them, or very little unless you have some expensive software to be able to access the ecu.

Definitely Wayyyy over due a oil service on 18k mile's. I change mine on my old banger every 8-10k, it doesn't make any sense at all with the guff on the alleged 'long life' oil, only that letting cars etc. go well over the service intervals only destroys the engine, which means we need to keep buying cars more often, they wouldn't do something like that would they??!! 🤔

Anyone who follows the manufacturers “recommended service intervals” is looking for trouble. I change my oil and filter every 5,000 kms and air filter and sparks every 10,000kms. Brakes are done every two years with a brake fluid change as well. It was following that regular servicing that my last car, a diesel lasted almost 400,000 miles with never an issue bar wear and tear on the suspension which I also attended to by renewing everything, ie shocks, springs, control arms, tie rods and drop links around the 200,000 mile mark. While I’m no Baz, I like working on my car and keeping it in tip top shape. The only modern vehicle I would want to personally own is just something with a dead simple port injected petrol engine thats NOT turbocharged. Preferably an automatic hybrid. A bit hard to find but they do exist: Mazda, Honda and Toyota make them. Those Mazdas seem a bit expensive but seems like the really have proper drivetrains and you just cant get hosed with a japanese car except the stupid Nissans and the crappy Kias. Ive been leaning towards the new Suzuki Jimny because of its practicality and simplicity BUT its not a good cruiser, has no automatic only a 5 speed manual.
