Remember when Carl tied all those balloons to his house in the Pixar movie “Up” and flew? Jonathan Trappe does that in real life. He attaches helium balloons to office chairs, gondolas, boats, even little houses, and he goes flying. Trappe has crossed the English Channel and soared over the Alps. That wouldn’t happen because you have to tell the aircraft force where you’re heading and what route so that it will make it safer for airplanes and for people that do these types of stuff. Meaning that he wouldn’t see planes in his way because his route is already reserved for him.

The reason I mentioned apples and oranges is that there are differences in the way that cluster balloons, hot air balloons and gas balloons are flown - They all have their own idiosyncrasies. I'm basing that partly on things that I learned from a talk he gave on the history of lighter-than-air flight about 15 years ago, so I'm surprised to hear he made that kind of absolute statement.
