Huy Ly Well yah a lot of medical equipment use helium. And its going to run out, and theirs nothing we can do about it. However they did recently find a HUGE natural cache of helium... I cant remember where. Texas I think. Completely ended the helium shortage at least for now. But listen. I work for Walmart. And every Black Friday we fill hundreds of balloons for the displays. When BF is over, we burst ALL of them. Perfectly good balloons. Why? Because the balloons were custom made for Walmart and because of some copyright agreement, we have to destroy them. THATS waist.

Maybe they should use Hydrogen... (just don't smoke near it) That'll just about halve the number of balloons they'd need.
@xformgame28149 жыл бұрын
Really? Hydrogen is twice the lightness when compared to helium, but when compared to oxygen, it is not much lighter than helium. You will need almost the same amount of balloons as you would need if you used helium. Think, if the atmosphere and the air we are in is helium, hydrogen gas would be half as light as helium, but when compared to the air that surrounds us, hydrogen is not much lighter than helium. I hope this clears the myth that Hydrogen can lift twice as much as helium in the air around us.

And now I remember that airship disaster.
@HuyLy948 жыл бұрын
Unless if they were popped with a flame or there was discharge of static electricity I doubt that would happen. The bond between the hydrogen atoms is too strong to be broken at room temperature and also like all flammable gases it needs to be concentrated enough in a given area to combust. Once the balloon pops the hydrogen would would just disperse in the air. As for the Hindenburg it was basically huge balloon like bladders within a bigger balloon like skin with easily enough hydrogen that a spark could've ignited the whole lot if the inner balloons were leaking

There is more to it, I've read some papers that suggest the helium crystallizes when it hits the cold of space and fall back down, perhaps the helium is simply floating on the atmospheres surface, other articles, documents suggest that it flies off in to space forever.

So, for someone like me (a sixty-and-some pound 5ft tall thirteen year old), the amount of balls they used would be more than enough to lift someone off the ground and remain airborne... Maybe even if just for a couple seconds longer.

Even though I'd said it before already on another post, I hope you people know that it's rather easy to make quite an amount of artificial helium in labs (and by extension, factories), since it's the second most simple atomic structure in existence, after hydrogen. In essence, no helium has really been wasted, since it costs only a bit to make anyways.
@HuyLy949 жыл бұрын
RedMatter No, it's only easy to make Helium in labs if they can separate it from natural gas from underground reserves. The helium is trapped there from nuclear decay over billions of years. And with the world's natural gas reserves dwindling we're not finding more Helium anytime soon. Also you can't just "make" elements in a lab, the only way to "make" a lot of helium is by fusing Hydrogen, which we haven't been able to do yet on a commercial scale. Because Helium doesn't form compounds since its an inert gas it doesn't react with anything so we can't extract it from anything either. Any Helium that is released in the air float up as you would expect to the top of the atmosphere where the solar wind picks it up and carries it to space. The closest source of Helium is the Moon where Helium flying off the Sun (an actual Helium producing "factory", since it fuses Hydrogen) is captured in the Moon's crust.
@awsomesauce039 жыл бұрын
Make artificial helium, what does that even mean. To make HELIUM( in emphasis because I don't want it to be confused with "artificial helium" whatever the fuck that is) you would need fusion and the only way we can do that is nuclear detonation

@MythicGuitarCompany10 жыл бұрын
agreed. there is actually a helium SHORTAGE.. there was a while, where you couldn't buy helium at all. stores wouldn't sell filled party balloons except in small quantities, IF they had a tank. Stores are still on waiting lists for tank refills in some places. With that said, Hydrogen, is still extremely flammable, and could potentially be dangerous, when strapping that much of it to a human. But... that makes for great TV...
@theballoondr10 жыл бұрын
But they are using helium gas, and this isn't dangerous at all. Hydrogen, really is, because it is so explosive. Nowadays all of balloons are filled with helium. I have no idea where you can get hydrogen.
@MythicGuitarCompany10 жыл бұрын
yeah hydrogen is definitely more explosive, especially if he is smoking... but you can get it at the same place you get welding gasses and carbon dioxide bottle refills and helium bottles. i.e. there are places that sell all of that stuff. You know though, you have to have a permit to operate a manned helium balloon thing. no pilot's license required, but you need permission and some training so you don't endanger others in airplanes etc
