This video is fucking insane. It really drives me up the fucking wall when people see a change of opinion over 10+ years as a contradiction instead of growth or a change of taste. You're allowed to have your feelings on an album change over time. You are not beholden to a score you gave it a decade ago. And the score you give something is not law. It's a loose summerization of how you feel. There is no sacredness to it. If you really think scores matter this much, you're a mouthbreathing nerd.

I personally think we should normalize reviewing art without giving it a score because its been made clear that many many people will hyper fixate on the score and not what is being said regarding the critic's feelings on the product.

Fantano is such a thoughtful critic, too. That's why I like him. Sure, I've disagreed with him. We're two different people with vastly different perspectives and life experiences. We're going to disagree. The problem is these haters want a Fox News or a CNN for music. They want someone who will always agree with them and will always reinforce their musical opinions. These people don't ever want to be challenged or told information that might change how they hear the music they listen to.

Fr! Like i dont even agree with any of the music critics i follow most of the time, and i honestly wouldn’t want to. Its not about having an echo chamber telling me i have good music taste, it’s about listening to someone who is passionate about music give their opinion and thought process. And it also encourages me to check out music i wouldn’t consider otherwise and venture out of my comfort zone more often. I think there are objective aspects to music production but as a whole music is an *INCREDIBLY* subjective medium that can be experienced in so many different ways.

Like, dave mustaine seems like a prick but most his music is pretty general "The government is eeeeevil" with some personal touches, but mostly through composition. I think the way he paints Fantano's opinions as "getting it wrong", perfectly demonstrates his warped perception of art discussion. There has to be a "wrong" take, or a "correct" one, and anything that goes against the grain is considered "unfair and biased". When in reality, what's unfair and biased is their perception of his opinions. When his opinions differ from theirs, that makes them uncomfortable. So instead of trying to understand why he feels that way, they let their own biases seep into the way they respond; they refuse to understand. They make up theories to explain why he's enjoying or disliking something with zero evidence. Any amount of self reflection would reveal this to them, but that requires a certain amount of self awareness they straight up lack. When you argue for objectivity in art, you've already lost.

One may not like Sexyy Red's album, but Fantano's reasoning for enjoying the record are not just very clearly his opinion, but are also well-reasoned arguments for what he underscores as good qualities of the record, like how much of its DNA is rooted in southern hip-hop acts like Three Six Mafia, which is more than true if you know that sound, and I find it crazy that someone out there thinks it somehow ruins his integrity that he likes the sound he's publicly known for liking.

Then a year later after listening to GKMC and DAMN I decided to give TPAB a listen again and literally fell in love. The songs made sense, they sounded incredible and I was able to appreciate the album for what it is. Since then I’ve listened to TPAB a dozen times and each listen it gets better and better. We change and music changes with us, I still don’t like death grips I just couldn’t get into them but maybe in a couple years I might or not but that’s just me. I do not understand how anyone can take a god damn music review so seriously and personally. People are way too obsessed with having the “right” opinion. Which is a fruitless endeavour when we’re talking about a subject as subjective as music. No one has “authority” over the discourse of music. And that’s the beauty of it. The fact that Fantano lives rent free inside people’s heads over something as trivial as a music review is hilarious and sad at the same time.

One of the biggest problems I have with the video is that with the argument of “women rappers” it takes that label as a genre rather than a thing particular of the artist, in terms of sound, cardi and sexyy are not the same so it’s (for me at least, as a woman) a dishonest comparison. Another thing is that the video doesn’t take in the context that fantano doesn’t only review rap, and listening to other genres will 100% change the perception of other genres.

this is wild to watch as someone who went to fantano for music recs in middle/high school and has since fell off from watching him. after the fader came after him, he started vocalizing this staunch political stance and bringing it up in a lot of stuff and i didnt vibe with it. not that i dont agree with what hes saying, i just didnt care to hear it in a review or see his smug ass tweets. now that ive chilled out a little more, it doesnt bother me as much. the guy can have his own opinions on politics or music and present them anyway he wants as a creator. what is wild to me is that in this chronically online time we live in, mfs really put him on a pedastal and act like he is THE guy. fantano has never came out and said “im an authority on hip hop.” hes never said hes an authority on anything. hes a dude who loves music and shares his opinons and has found a way to make a living off of it, and thats pretty cool to see, even if you dont agree with everything he says. i cant imagine sitting down and being a guy who loves rap music and makes content about the industry, making an exposé about how an internet critic giving his opinon on a shitty kanye album is indicative of them falling from grace. people like this just do anything for clicks, its kinda sad.

I’ve always gone to critics like fantano or brad for interesting recommendations and they’ve always delivered. I feel like once an artists has more than 1 album in their discography, it becomes perfectly acceptable to review subsequent albums with some sort of regard to their previous work, and possibly taking any aspect of their entire discography into consideration towards score/review of the current album. If an artist previously had scored 8+ on multiple albums, and they release an album that simply does not live up to previous works, that should be taken into consideration for the review of the current album, possibly giving it a lower score because we expected more or possibly giving it a higher score because the artists took a chance, tried something new, or their artistic vision still shines through.

For other genres, he seems to really dive deep into the instrumentation, arrangements and overall vibe, but for metal he sounds like he only listens to half the album and only cares about how heavy and abrasive it is. Listen to most of his prog reviews, he sounds utterly disinterested the moment metal gets complex and nuanced

I personally think it’s because he doesn’t know enough about metal to be able to give a full diagnosis on the sound and production

@@eyecon1189 As far as I know, he listened to a ton of it and even played bass in a metal band

TBF seems like he has a huge overarching problem with how most modern metal is produced and has specifically cited the progressive metal scene. So maybe it's a problem that goes beyond the instrumentation and composition.

His meshuggah reviews are abysmal. Especially his Koloss review. Such a dense and technical album, and he praises it so much and gave it a 6 in the end, it feels so off with how he described it. It really does feel like his metal reviews are structured weirdly
