Congrats on the big success, Octopus Lady! You approach marine biology with humour, enthusiasm and humbleness (it always amuses me to see you constantly confess your inability to be certain of pronunciation in your field - so many of my colleagues are so *certain* in their pronounciations. Never get into an argument with a mycologist over how to pronounce 'Fungi' :P) I sincerely hope you are reborn as an octopus in another life, brief though that may be :)

The fact sponges can actually rearrange their whole bodies whilst still functioning makes me wonder whether this was another wonderful bit of marine biology Hillenburg stealthily and casually introduced into SpongeBob gags or just a coincidence. (EDIT: Just a couple seconds later the video uses SpongeBob as a visual representation of fragmentation XD)

Simplicity, flexibility and durability have a big part to play, I'm sure. Also low energy requirements. We might be killing off corals via exponential climate change, but there is some evidence to suggest Sponges are actually pretty tolerant to low oxygen, high temperature environments. I suspect they will outlive us in the fossil record.

This video is reminding me of my 5th grade science class, where we spent the whole year going through all of the different kingdoms and other categories of life. I distinctly remember sponges because that was the first group of animals we discussed. I'm glad at least one of my elementary school science classes did that, it was very foundational. And who knew that sponges were so interesting?! Quite adaptable little critters, aren't they? I have a new idea for a D&D monster now.

Fascinating! Another "advantage" (if that's the right word) of having cells that move around fairly freely is that it's closer to being a colony of single cell organisms. If you're hoping to innovate multicellular life, then gluing your cells together is just one more feature that has to evolve.

I come to KZbin to encounter creators that care a whole lot about the thing they love. I have learned so much from KZbin, but only because of the sincere love of the topic that person is talking about. Creators like you remind me of my Dad, the genuine wonder he had in his voice when he talked with me about science and maths and history and and and.. I can hear how much you care, just like him. How much it hits you, how cool it is to you and you wanna share it. And it exists on this Earth.. you care and it exists.

Hello OctopusLady! This is the first of your videos I’ve seen, but will definitely not be the last! My massage therapist and I have been having excellent ADHD conversations for the past four years, and she just sent me this video after telling me about you (along with a video about bat sounds and a funny doctor’s TikTok). I wish my partner weren’t working all night - I’ve already texted him sponge facts (he is very excited), and I want to watch your videos with him! Thank you for reminding me how much I love detailed biodiversity facts. Not that I ever forgot - I do have a degree in ocean sciences - but I’m a paramedic now, and it’s easy to get lost in medicine, which I also love. But you’ve reminded me of my college self looking forward to Biology of Phytoplankton and Diversity of Life every day, and I seriously appreciate the way you present this information. If I could, I’d buy you lunch just to listen to you talk about marine invertebrates 😂

Yes! Join me on the sponge-loving train!! A truly ancient alien creature, I've been so hyped for this episode! One of my favorite things about sponges is the fact that they have essentially tiny shards of glass (spicules) in them for defense. When they are harvested for fancy bath sponges, there's a special process they have to go through to remove the shards. My favorite sponges: Venus Flower Basket sponge (silica sponge, very pretty), and one found in 2017, farrea cordelli (looks like white chiffon fabric, also very pretty).

Congrats on the channel growth! You've very quickly become one of my favorites :D The research you do, the diagrams you show when talking about specific parts of animals or their cells (and color coding each part as you're speaking about it), I love your content ^_____^ I also enjoy how you point out that sometimes research is inconclusive, sometimes different researchers end up with wildly different information on the same thing. The beauty of learning and figuring out the world XD As for how I would rearrange my insides, if I could... I'd probably avoid doing it CONSTANTLY like a sponge, that just sounds extra tiring. SPONGES ARE HARDCORE! But, I would very much like to rearrange some of my body fat and make myself a bit more... fit. Or at least rearrange my insides to give off the illusion that I'm more fit than I currently am XD And, I mean, that whole 'rearranging parts to make up for a fragment breaking off' thing is pretty neat, too. I'd do some of that. Minor cuts or scrapes? Rearrange those innards and get that healed up real quick! Broken bone? Rearrange the innards and maybe I can continue functioning like it's not broken while it heals!
