Nelson as a coach was absolutely brilliant at working with what he had, which was with decent teams & making them overachieve. If anything, maybe Nelson as a GM should be criticized more. In hindsight, his teams had too many perimeter scorers & not enough 3 & D guys.

Truth! He had the ability to coach a way better defense as we saw from the Bucks days... in '87 they took the Cs to Game 7
@johnbradbury861021 сағат бұрын
he also didn't understand that defense leads to scoring opportunities. Regardless of the sport you need defense to win the championship. Great offense will get you to the playoffs but you will always come up short.

Don Nelson was a really good tactical head coach. But he was the basketball equivalent of Marty Schottenheimer with winning a lot of games but being willing to be able to adjust especially for playoff matchups.
@Logholders16 сағат бұрын
Always been confused by the Marty narrative. The year following ‘the drive’ his RB fumbled the ball at the goaline to tie the score… leading the Broncos to win again. With the Chargers his kicker missed 2 FG’s back to back years. Someone also intercepted the ball in the end zone and then fumbled upon returning it.l Think it would have sealed the game if he just kneeled down. Montana got hurt the one year in the AFC championship game. How are those bad mistakes on his part? A lot of his losses are like if Don Nelson was losing every playoff series at the buzzer.

You're also kind of leaving out the fact that a lot of his players really disliked him. You can see a lot of these former players on different podcast talking about how they felt about Don Nelson.

A stellar video on Nelson-and the game itself. As a Mavs fan, you added lots of depth in context to the Dallas' 2006 #1 seed first round exit debacle.
@redmustangredmustang23 сағат бұрын
I just remember as a Mavs fan the Mavs in the early 2000's just could not get over the hump when it came to the Kings knifing their way inside. They did not have a good big man to stop and they kept getting booted from the play offs because of that.

This coach thought Jasikevičius was a shooting guard, he had to explain he's a point guard, a playmaker. He put Šaras on the bench forever. The same player who nearly beat Team USA in the Olympic semi-final in 2000 and did beat the Americans in 2004 in the group stage.

I watched my share of Nellie ball in the 90s and it was pretty exciting. People say "ahead of it's time" and maybe that's true but they really had no starter-level bigs during Run-TMC, and that was a tough situation. All yhe other teams in the West had big and competent front courts (Lakers, Blazers, Suns, Spurs, etc). The Richmond for Owens trade was based on that weakness - trade dome simply because Owens was a couple of inches taller? he was not really the kind of big they needed. Things were turning around with Spewell and Webber but Nelson and Webber had a crazy tiff (kind of glossed over in the video - although good video overall). That situation did not work out well for anyone. I'd say the Run-TMC era was the best and they just needed some creative GM work to land a legit big.

I grew up during the whole Don Nelson tenure in Dallas. I remember thinking it was a fun waste of time as a kid. Without Nelson there wouldn't have been Avery Johnson giving Dirk the toughness he needed. It all ended well for the team. Very grateful for the foundation Don, Donny, and Mark laid!

Don Nelson style is basically todays NBA.. He was way ahead of his time. Dirk draft day trade is probably top 3 greatest draft day trade ever.

Bob Lanier was a Terrific Big man, however he was on the downside of his Career when he went to Milwaukee. The Bucks also had Jack Sikma, another "forgotten" legend in the 1986-87 season.

Longtime GSW fan who saw Don Nelson in person. His style foreshadowed the style of Steve Kerr. Both did not use tall 🦒 starting centers well. In the case of Kerr, he does not have many. Pat Riley, KC Jones, Phil Jackson were better head coaches than Don Nelson.

The #8 warriors bearing the 67 win #1 mavericks was truly shocking. All they did was attack the rim non stop. The Jazz actually had a shotblocker however, Kirilinko had like a million blocks in the first game, and it was obvious the Warriors were a one trick pony.

This really does not answer did he take teams as far as he could having vastly improved them. Maybe the Bucks who led their division OK. Did these teams have the talent to go further? Or did he take them to places they would not have under most coaches? Did they have a Duncan, Shaq, Michael etc?

A decent video, but you never prove your point that it was Nelson's "ego" that kept him getting a chip. It's pretty rude, actually. You tell me that his ideas eventually succeeded, with other coaches later on, but don't tell why it worked with them but not Nelson.
