@Eis_7 ай бұрын
They were given money by Honda to run the team, around $110 Million USD, along with the factory and equipment. This was enough to at least (1) have their new car compete for 1 season and (2) have enough time to look for an official buyer (What now is Mercedes AMG). The $1 is essentially just symbolism of them buying the team; and this wasn't the first time this happened (Ford/Jaguar-Redbull on 2004). What's interesting with their setup though is that the team on Honda and Brawn was essentially the same people, same drivers, and the Honda cars. Even when Merc bought the team, Brawn (the guy, the team principal) was their principal until 2013.

They weren't complaining about innovation, they were complaining because it was "against the spirit of the regulations" so to speak. The intention of the rules was to not allow double diffusers, but the rules were poorly written which allowed them to happen anyway. The teams that didn't add them didn't miss the idea, they just were under the impression it was banned. The scandal with Toyota's rally team however long ago was a similar case, the only difference being that Toyota was suspended rather than their design being approved. Modern rules have a section called "Spirit of the Regulations" which allows the rules to be enforced as intended even if the wording is bad or leaves loopholes.

You missed to mention that in that season KERS was introduced. Big teams had it but in the beginning, it was just a disadvantage due to the extra weight and balancing problems caused by the system. Brawn being on low budget, couldn't even dream about having KERS in their cars. Ironically that was just another factor of luck for them, they could keep the car light and simple which turned out to be more effective.

You could also go read the actual unedited story yourself, just one example copy/pasted. The budget that Brawn GP is working on is another significant factor. When Ross Brawn bought the team he was given 100 million pounds by Honda to keep the team alive for the 2009 season. 100 million pounds is the amount that Honda would have had to fork out, in order to close down the factory, and make all the staff (over 700 of them) redundant. This would obviously have made Honda look very bad, so decided that giving the same sum to Ross to keep the team alive was better for their reputation. Brawn GP also received an advanced commercial payment from FOM boss Bernie Ecclestone. That makes a total of 140 million pounds, which for one season is a decent and workable budget. In 2007 the top spending teams spent in the region of 200 million pounds just to give a comparison.

To be fair, including conditions like being born to extremely wealthy parents, parents who are influential in the F1, or just so happening to be in the favors of very wealthy sponsors, greatly improve your odds. Looking at the subset of kids to median-income parents, and not being in one of the other 2 catagories, your chance is basically 0. Being in the other groups and having your sponsor/parent dedicated to get you into F1 will give you some pretty good odds. F1 is basically for the rich, not really the talented, I'm sure there would be plenty talented kids who just weren't rich enough to get a high-end go-kart to prove their talent at first, or had parent who didn't risk their whole financial stability while already being median-income in a rich country to ensure a career.

It’s always been something I’ve thought that Honda must regret, pulling out when they did. They had developed a championship winning car, and as they proved with Red Bull later, they can develop a great engine… if they’d held their nerve and stayed in F1 - particularly as they’d made significant improvements to their engines reliability, running temperatures, power and max rpm over the 2006, 2007 & 2008 seasons, then there’s a very good chance they’d have ended up F1 Constructors Champions, and Mercedes F1 never would have become a thing
