Excellent job summarizing the information given by this expert. Hopefully, to eradicate the 66% demographic across our country that are reading below proficiency, ALL educators will come on board. Thank you! And I wonder if you meant to say that Dr. Dehaene was advising us to get on board with SoR already and integrate spelling and dictations, as opposed to "writing" per se (although it is writing of course)?? In K-2 the words they are learning to decode are the ones they need to encode to really cement those mental orthographic images. The goal is that reading and spelling are taught in a complementary way. Is that the advice?
@readingscienceacademy2 жыл бұрын
Yes exactly. Writing the words as you are learning to decode, and writing the letters as you are learning to match phonemes to graphemes is what I understood him to say.

@@readingscienceacademy I love that! Dr. Dehaene speaks out and more people will listen. Many speech to print advocates have been saying that all along. Focussing on decoding to teach reading with structured literacy works to get them reading, but they end up with a fuzzy mental orthographic image, and spelling lags- so not the results we want. Putting children in the role of language detective requires focus on both encoding and decoding the same words, in the same lesson- the way to go- coordinated instructional sequences! The more students write and segment to spell, the better. (But continuously blend to read, please!) "Always learn to read with a whiteboard nearby- you'll need it!" Thank you for sharing that awesome news. I am very optimistic for the future of SoR--

Stephanie, Thank you ever so much for this helpful explanation of such an enticing topic. Imagine there may be specific neurons for each letter! He is exciting to listen to; with each day there is something new to learn. Thank you again. Bye on my way to Amazon.
