PLEASE DO NOT BE EMBARRASSED! I think it is quite important for men to know what women go through in regards to their period. Every female! It isn't a gross or disgusting thing. There is nothing to be embarrassed about. Your mom, sister, wife, daughter......every female. And Katie, I am so sorry you were not given the right information or prepared more than you were. My daughters are 9 and 10 years old. We have open and honest conversations. I want my girls to have the correct information. There is no question that is off limits. I do not want there to be shame or embarrassment around these topics. I had a hysterectomy in April 2016 so my girls know that I do not have a cycle anymore and they understand way. I dealt with Endometriosis and PCOS(Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome) so the possibility of my daughters also living with either of these or both is real. I would regularly drop blood clots from the size of a grape to a large lemon. We have supplies here at home and my older turns 11 in May. Her body is changing, so she understands that the importance of proper use of the kit in her backpack. Included is a change of clothing in case needed. She is also in grade 5, and wears a sports bra too. Using the correct terms/words of the body is vital for many reasons along with periods, sex, different ways of intimacy, orgasms and above everything else CONSENT. I have always done my absolute best to teach my daughters about consent and that it is their body, therefore, their choice. That at any moment, they are absolutely allowed to remove their consent. Consent is not something we automatically learn. It needs to be taught. For example if I am tickling them and they say stop....I stop. If they do not wish to give someone a hug when saying goodbye, they do not have to. I utterly despised this expectation when I was younger. There was a moment when we were leaving their dad's parents house when my oldest was around 2 years old and their grandpa wanted a hug but she said no. Well he proceeded to saying he was sad and was going to take the box of Smarties away from her if he didn't get a hug. I immediately saw red and handed the chocolates back to him myself and walked out the door. You DO NOT guilt my toddler into doing something with her body that you want. Ever. Some people say "oh he was only joking, you know that". No, it was about power and control in order to have his wants met. She set her boundary and did not give her consent. I did not force and will not minimize her no. Now as their mom, I do pull rank when there is a medical concern.

@Klara Barunović Thank you. My daughter did not need to have a reason. No explanation was required or justification. She said no. Her grandpa did not have her consent. Again, consent is something that needs to be taught. She stated her boundary, which needed to be validated and respected. I want my girls to know and understand it is okay to say no. That applies to all areas of their lives. Like I stated in my original comment, above all else consent is paramount. As is choice. In our family, there is always choice. Always. We all have choice. If you are not willing to stand up for the choice you have made, or if you are not proud of a choice you have made, then we talk through it and try to understand why we feel that way and discuss how we could have handled a situation differently. I am attempting to lead by example and very mindful of tone and delivery when we are speaking to someone. At the end of the day, we are all humans. We are not perfect. No one is. Being self aware can be uncomfortable at times but I would much rather be self aware than self righteous. My mantra is "bitter or better" and I do strive to be on the better side. Which side do you wish to live on?

When josh said he put a tampon in, it made me think of my husband. I never could push the tampon in and was scared to preach it in because my first time hurt. I had my very first period at 13 almost 14, but never really had regular periods month to month until I was around 16. They would stop for 2-8 months depending.
