The sun also wiggles because of gravity, and that wiggling creates a Barycenter. Most planets are small enough that the Barycenter is inside the sun, but Jupiter is big enough that the Barycenter for it is outside the sun itself, and that means Jupiter does not technically orbit the sun, but it actually orbits the Barycenter. (I think, I may be wrong and someone can correct me)
@ingostapel199 ай бұрын
The mass of jupiter is so big it slightly pulls on the sun, that creates a "barycenter" somewhere in space and both the sun & jupiter orbit that spot And that is the wiggeling, the wiggeling is the orbit
@Uaarkson7 ай бұрын
All the bodies in the solar system orbit around a single barycenter. It oscillates slightly with the motion of those bodies, and Jupiter and Saturn are massive enough that the barycenter is occasionally outside the sun.

@ you have a wild imagination. Having a view of our sun orbiting the galaxy, would tend to make us feel more humble. We are on a small rock, along with billions of others. We are not the center of everything. And being reminded of the ever changing landscape makes us value what little time we have here and how lucky we are to have it. Your imagination reminds me how easily religions are started.

I remember back in the nineties when I was a kid and being totally amazed the first time I saw (in a science video) how our solar system actually moves through the galaxy and what the planets' orbits truly look like -- just as they're shown here in this animation. I also remember being REALLY freaked out for a good two weeks afterwards by how the planets appear to be "chasing" the sun because I was so worried the Earth would eventually be unable to catch up and it would ultimately get left behind. In my defense, this was like 1992 and I was seven years old, but still. It definitely caused a bit of an existential crisis, that's for sure! 😆

This makes zero sense to me, we use telescopes to monitor other galaxies and planets, if they’re constantly moving how could we know where they are , and if we’re just falling or flying through space when does it hit a wall? The end? Like driving till you hit the ocean, you’ve gone as far as possible, or what if we took a craft out of our galaxy, once we actually got into OUTER SPACE, does the area around stand still? Like going from being in a river to being on land.

Think of being on a road trip and you a see a really far away mountain. Even though you're moving at 60mph the mountain appears stationary. That's how they're able to observe galaxies even though we're moving through the universe. However for closer objects, the movement can disrupt observations. Nowadays computers make that issue trivial in most instances though. As the other guy said, our sun is orbiting the galaxy so it won't reach an end until it's orbit is interrupted. But there are two dominant theories for what the edge of the universe is and neither involve an end really. First off is the universe has no edge and is infinite, this applies if the universe is flat (and I'm pretty sure if it has negative curvature but I'm less sure on that). If the universe has positive curvature, then there's still no edge because you can go in any direction for long enough and end up where you started. I just realized your comment is ten months old but I already wrote all this.
@roytee31272 ай бұрын
There's no wall. "Outer space" is so unimaginably huge that we could travel through it for billions of years and never reach an end. We can follow the planets because they move according to well-known laws, and we can calculate where they will be. Galaxies are so unimaginably far away that scientists need sensitive instruments to detect their motion. Like if you see a car moving on a highway a mile away, it looks like it's moving slowly.
