In this video, we delve into the world of renewable energy and the innovative ways in which companies like Biome Renewables are making less disruptive and more efficient wind turbines by using nature as their inspiration.
Wind turbines have been a vital source of green energy for many years, providing power to millions of homes and businesses across the globe. However, even modern wind turbines can be made more efficient and environmentally friendly. Biome Renewables is one such company that is looking to nature for inspiration on how to achieve this goal.
We’ll explore how Biome Renewables has developed its "FeatherEdge" technology, inspired by the silent flight of owls, to reduce noise levels by up to 80 percent. The specialized fringe along the trailing edge of the turbine blades forces air to mix at specific locations, muffling the sound of air flowing around them. This allows for more efficient wind turbines, as they can spin slightly faster in wind of the same speed, generating more power.
In addition to the FeatherEdge technology, Biome Renewables has also developed the "PowerCone" device, which channels air back onto the blades, increasing efficiency and electricity-generating ability. This device is modeled after the falling maple seed, which redirects the wind along its slender length, accelerating flow towards the tip, and allowing it to remain aloft longer.
By looking to nature, companies like Biome Renewables can find elegant solutions that maximize the power of the wind while minimizing any negative impacts on the environment.

Excellent! Still have a question though: is there already a solution for birds getting killed by the blades?

Aeroplane wings , at the end ,are upturned to reduce swirls , which other wise increase drag/ resistance and vibration.

yah but it is more efficient to just lengthen the blade. if you are thinking of winglets and sharklets.

Nature will always be our ultimate source for scientific development. Respect for your great work! Question: I have been trying to get in touch with a representative about integrating biomimicry to an educational curriculum. I also work for an international school and the students should discover this more. Sent emails to your info account but no response. Would love to collaborate!

Sorry, but the turbine itself do not follow nature in any form. Smøla windturbine area in Norway is among the biggest in Europe, a news story about it told that morethan 100 sea eagels have been taken by the blades, and more than 500 birds. Owls are also beeing killed by them. This show that the turbine itself is not biomicry designed and the parts that are created in this way don't help nature. I think The Biomimicry Institute also need to thave the big picture in mind of is this a real nature following design, or is it only greenpainting industry.

Since you only care about eagles and owls, i care about mice squirells and other beautifull brush dwelling creatures which have been saved by the turbines killing owls and eagles . My my what a beautiful ballance of nature between humans birds and other creatures of this planet
