@@Pickelrye CE1 is a lot more reminiscent of the original arcade game, without ghost chains or bombs to remain a true and faithful modernization of pac-man w/o adding too much new stuff. would recommend if the classic PM gameplay style is more your thing compared to how DX handles it

Basically, the original C.E. is just you and four ghosts, while DX added the ghost trains, bombs, slow-mo. About the only thing C.E. changes up from the arcade formula is turn buffering, where you hold a direction early and sparks fly, which is a great edition for analog sticks.

The originals are too hard to control without the turn buffering, that's why I prefer the original C.E. over the arcade games. It's built for consoles, instead of arcade emulations really meant to be played with arcade sticks.

What you were talking about was DX+, not the original. The original CE was released in 2007 and was kickstarted by Microsoft, as the original rerelease proved to be popular on XBLA. They asked Bandai Namco to make a new Pac-Man game and hold a world competition in New York, which would be the Pac-Man World Championship. For DX, the development team wanted the game to focus on the excitement of fleeing from ghosts, and to appeal towards a more casual audience. Early prototypes experimented with increasing the number of power pellets and ghosts, leading to the sleeping ghost and "ghost train" mechanics being added. The neon art-style was inspired by the fluorescent lights used in early LCD handheld games, and was intended to help make DX stand out among other games. It was the first game released under the Namco Generations label, used for remakes of older Namco video games. The + was added to DX in 2013 adding DLC and was also released to Steam for the first time. So, to be technical, the first CE game for PC was DX+, but the first CE game was in 2007.

Massive shoutout to the Pac-Man CE Famicom port, it's basically Pac-Man Championship Edition but it's on the Famicom/NES. You can get it as part of a collection of Namo's Famicom ports either on Steam or consoles. It's really well made, even emulating a custom sound chip for some really great sounding chiptunes.

Iwatani was NOT involved in the creation of CE DX, circa 2010. He did however, design the original CE1, circa 2007, without the ghost trains and all that found in DX.

I was about to comment... what many others already did. Original Championship Edition for the 360 was the bomb which restarted it all. Historically one of the best and most successful "downloadable console games" ever.

Championship Edition DX is fun. Also, Pac-Land was one of the earliest side-scrolling platformers to come out and served as a reference for the creation of Super Mario Bros. instead of Namco wanting to ride on the success of that genre.

I don't know if this is controversial, but Pacman CE:DX is NOT "the first game". The game is fundamentally entirely different than Pacman CE. I would argue the real first game is superior to DX, and that it keeps in the spirit of Pacman even better, as in there's always the 4 ghosts, there's no ghost trailing, but also, there is that satisfying "eat a bunch of ghosts" at the end of a sequence. Honestly, I know this video is old, but I'd LOVE a video on the real original Championship Edition.

The only sad thing about CEDX+, is that it's not available on PS4/PS5. It is still available on Steam, however. And the Xbox 360 version is backward compatible on Xbox One and Xbox Series S/X.

nice video. just so you know, though, dx isn't actually the first game, nor an expansion, it's a full on new game. i'd definitely recommend giving the first one a go. it's not on pc but you can emulate the xbox 360 or psp versions of the game

My 1st Championship edition game was Pac-man Championship Edition 2 Plus. It was very fun and I never really cared for the score all that much (Sort of). I would recommend people to definitely play it. It's on the switch too!

I love equally Championship edition and c.e. dx. Championship is more interesting when it cames to challenge because ghosts have similar behavior to original. Dx is more a Quick pick and play game. But i feel the slowdown when near ghosts is more a excuse to offer a easier dificulty to modern players. Don t get me wrong. Both are great, and probably the Only worth sucessors of the original

I actually think Pac-Man is more of a ten out of ten than Last of Us because it's a video game first. Not trying to be anything it isn't (a movie). Grandparents are more likely to pick up Pac-Man on the spot and have fun with it lmao. Meanwhile they'll be left scratching their heads about how to reload or find secrets or whatever. Basically presentation doesn't matter in the scheme of things when bad games are able to look great.
